Re:god bless capitalism
When I was young, my family had a gardener. The gardener had a relation, called Cedric, who had learning difficulties. Cedric ended up turning up a lot of the time to help out, so my family paid him too. We would sometimes sweep up leaves together.
Since then I have turned my back on thoughts of privilege and wealth, and the idea of employing a gardener, or even owning a garden, makes me shudder. The only one gardening with me is going to be sharing a garden with me. So the National Trust and its affiliated organisations are more my cup of tea now. If Cedric were still around, and whether he still wanted to do gardening or just relax in some of the best kept gardens in England, I would love to take him around some of the NT properties.
Every time I meet someone called Cedric I still think of him. Growing up with someone who was much older than me, yet more childlike, and yet who worked for us... I guess it had a marked effect on me.
Anyway, your name is close enough.

Avebury
The complex at Avebury is orders of magnitude more impressive than Stonehenge. Possibly the most impressive stone... calendar err.. complex in the world. You can't get more than a fraction in a single photo. Definately worth a day trip. Some links: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-avebury http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avebury

Re:Heathrow
I grew up 100 yards from Eling Tide Mill - kayaked under the bridge and out to see in my home made kayak to make this vaguely geeky, and I now live in Winchester and never expected them to be mentioned on Slasdot.
Weird.
Anyway, there's also the excellent City Mill in Winchester and it's 59 minutes by train from Waterloo station (Eling is 70 minutes - get the train to Totton and then walk down Eling Lane). From a nerd perspective, the computer museum at Bletchley is worth a visit, and in London the V&A, British Museum, Tate Modern (good Warhole exihibits) are all good, and if you like engineering the pumping station at Greenwhich is interesting (honest). -
George Bernard Shaw did it too
We recently cycled to his home shaws corner and on display are the colour coded "FAQ" letters that his secretary would send back to questions about vegetarianism etc.

Re:Who the hell is William Morris?Who the hell is William Morris? A socialist wallpaper designer.
Joking aside, he was a major force in the Arts and Crafts movement and also a man with an interest in political thought and a poet and novelist.
Anyone who hadn't at some point seen a replica of one of his designs would have had to have been living at the North Pole.
This was built for him:

Re:Is that Prudent?
"It's impressive, but I think that the goal of bridges is to be as short as possible (although in this case, that's obviously the shortest length it can be)."
Hmm, I wonder if Northern Ireland holds the record for shortest bridge :)

Re:As quoted from my wife's website
I lived in the area where the plotters did much of their plotting outside london. some of their houses are quite amazing like this one which wasn't finished and this small lodge which was the second one is especially strange and packed with wierd religious symbolism.
