  1. UK launch was a disaster as well on The Fire Phone Debacle and What It Means For Amazon's Future · · Score: 1

Was launched on O2 only at £42 a month, totally bombed. Now down to £27 a month and a frankly insane £399 on PAYG still locked to O2. I pop in now and again to see if the price has dropped anymore and last time I was there the chap who knows me by now said they had sold one since Christmas. https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/phones/amazon/fire-phone/

Turns out they didn't have standing to sue for the actual music as they were basically DJ mixtapes which they had licensed the music for, so they where suing over the copyright of the tracklistings..

Posted this on the Guardian site but no reply so thought I'd ask here. As far as I know this ruling is only applicable in England and Wales as Scotland and Northern Ireland, while part of the UK has their own legal system. So therefore the block should not apply to customers in Scotland and Northern Ireland? I'm sure it would be easier for the ISPs to attempt a blanket block for a technical point of view but if so could their Scottish and Northern Irish customers have grounds to complain?

I've had an Samsung Omnia 7 since mid-November on 3, I'm delighted with the phone, I was one of the original UK guys who queued for an iPhone on launch, then went to a iPhone 3G, I just fancied a change and it was cheaper to get the Omnia 7 than an iPhone 4 & I have no regrets. And the Zune software I feel is far better than buggy iTunes. I tried a few Android phones as well, did like them but I felt the Windows 7 Phone's Metro was easier to navigate around. Saying that, I'll give andriod another go when my contact is up next November to see if it's got better. Saying that, the wife's Palm Pre's OS is fantastic as well, but stuck with flimsy and outdated hardware in my opinion. Web OS running on the Omnia 7's form factor with the AMOLED screen would be pretty cool.

  22. Been running Vista since launch with no problems on Microsoft Extends XP's Life By 6 Months · · Score: 5, Interesting

I work in an organisation who has a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement license so on Vista's launch I installed Vista Enterprise on a pretty crappy work PC (Dell GX240) and Vista Ultimate on my home PC (self made Athlon XP 2000+) to see what it was like and I still use them daily.

And I have had no problems with instability and apart from an obscure Belkin USB IrDa device I have had no problems getting other devices to work, either with Vista drivers or XP Drivers and I find it stable and fast, apart for copying files which is a dog.

At this point you may be thinking "Ah, he thinks Vista is great", but you'd be wrong. I quite like Aero, I love the way Vista Ultimate talks to my XBOX 360, but I'm left thinking "Is that it?" There is nothing there worth the £350 Microsoft is asking for the full version, asking that is taking the piss. The basic version I think is £100.. is it worth that.. even then probably not.

While we have no plans to roll out Vista at work at the moment, we said to any of the IT support staff they could install it if they liked on their PCs/Laptops and only 2 of us (including me) did it out of 120 people.

It seems no-one is really interested or cares about Vista.

We are a Microsoft Enterprise site with about 1000 PC's & I'm testing Vista at the moment. My test machine is an old Dell GX240 with a 1.5GHZ P4 so we didn't expect blinding speeds, but most of our hardware is that age so I used that. Had to upgrade to 1GB of RAM and it had a 16MB Graphics Card so that had to go too but apart from that it's the same as it came out of the factory.

I was expecting a lot of hassle installing it but it was very straight forward apart from the 3Com 905 card didn't have drivers, which suprised me as it's a pretty common card. Loaded the XP drivers and it was fine, then it updated to Vista drivers on the Windows Update.

So far it's been stable, fast enough, we have had no issues which anything apart from an old Lexmark Z33 printer which refuses to print.

So far so good for Microsoft eh? Well no... we have no plans to upgrade it because everyone who has seen it has basically said "is that it?" and have walked away disapointed. OK, when people see Aero for the first time they usually go "Wow!" but after 5 minutes playing with it, they get bored.

After my initial testing I said anyone else in the office here can install it if they like, out of 20 people only 2 have bothered, no-one else is interested.
