Apache was released long before IIS.
It has been the dominate server platform since 1996 (displacing NCSA for the title),
and has continued to have a larger share than all other servers combined since 1999.

and I've seen no signs of it's reduction, ever.

Considering the usage of Linux within the US Government, particularly in the intelligence area (see NSA SELinux), I wouldn't be half surprised if the government wasn't already up to something regarding SCO. With a good volume of slashdotters filing complaints with the SEC and FTC, something powerful could indeed be drawn from the woodwork.

I see your points to some extent but consider Apache was been by far the most popular web server for at least the last 8 years running on various platforms. Security is in design and not proportional to popularity. Hack ATTEMPTS maybe be higher with popularity but those attempts are useless until you find the hole.

Do you really think you can embarrass them by their choice of Operating System?

As I've said before the parliament is unfortunatly not a public forum anyway. Even if excessive expenditure was revealed, it wouldn't work, because people don't know about other options.

What we need to do is change the system from the inside. We need to stop putting the emphasis on University training. It takes three/four years to get through a uni Comp Sci course, and then you are minimally qualified for the job. We need to start giving out sysadmin and other such jobs based on practical tests (somewhat like interviews are used for secretarial work). The major question should be can they make this work, and not do they have a BSc Computing from Uni Melb.

The fact is that three people from my year nine extension computing class ended up running our school's systems, because the sysadmin (who moved on to higher things) didn't know anything. When there was an issue with

net send * hello

being executed the big guns were called in. They disabled all the icons on the desktop and put in a single folder of shortcuts instead. NT4. They didn't disable, or even audit, cmd, net or any of the other usefuls. They hadn't disabled downloads (they disabled telnet so it was a good 15 seconds before puTTY was on the computers). They knew nothing.
But the techies had bits of paper saying "so-and-so passed such-and-such computer course".

Employment decisions should be based on demonstrable practical knowledge, not bits of paper.

Once this is done the system will change itself; those people savvy in the ways of technology will ask for a change of system. They will ridicule the continued use of Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000 and will start using a cheaper, arguably better webserver like Apache. Without these changes how long before the Australian government spends God-knows-how-much on Windows 2003?

... the original ran on freeBSD, and even the coders in Redmond had a hell of a time getting it to work on NT/2000 based servers!

Hotmail is still running on freeBSD with Apache for Webserving. Have a look here for prove!

And I suspect, the database on the backside is also still running Oracle on Sun boxen. Only the front-WebServers were substituted by Win2K after a long period of trial-and-error. As most people only query www.hotmail.com, they wouldn't notice the truth about Hotmail, and Microsoft won't tell you either. In fact Microsoft never announced, they successfully migrated Hotmail to Win2K, but they silently want us to believe this happened.

Nope, we use Netcraft to determine who's OS stays up the longest. Sadly for us Linux fans it's *BSD, but at least that's one of "the family" as it were. Netcraft

The Netcraft article states:

Comparing the sites which are now hosted on Windows 2003 with their operating system in December 2002 shows over 42% of these to be new sites, 43% (68K) to be upgrades from other Windows platforms (mainly Windows 2000), 5% (8K) to be migrations from Linux and 1% from other operating systems.

So the Information Week article spins the data...

According to NetCraft's June analysis of the software running Web servers, Microsoft's newest operating system, Windows Server 2003, made significant inroads into the Linux market--and 5% of its growth has come at the expense of Linux, with more than 8,000 systems having migrated from that open-source operating system to Windows Server 2003.

Not systems... sites.

This could be one computer with a bunch of little domains hosted on it that switched over to windows.

An excuse for what? Netcraft checks your uptime by pinging your machine. They aren't going to be able to log into your machine and check the internal counter that keeps track of your uptime. The limit in the Linux counter has no relevance here.

Why do some Operating Systems never show uptimes above 497 days ?

The method that Netcraft uses to determine the uptime of a server is bounded by an upper limit of 497 days for some Operating Systems (see above). It is therefore not possible to see uptimes for these systems that go beyond this upper limit. Although we could in theory attempt to compute the true uptime for OS's with this upper limit by monitoring for restarts at the expected time, we prefer not to do this as it can be inaccurate and error prone.

Being a strong follower of Sam Walton's business philosophies, I am quite curious of who Wal-Mart chose. Knowing how critical computing is to the Wal-Mart operations, they would be using the very best technology out there. So, I put "www.walmart.com" in the search window and got this.

Webservers that operate behind a caching system, load balancer, reverse proxy server or a firewall may sometimes report the operating system of the intermediate machine. Hence reports of 'Microsoft/IIS on Linux' may indicate that either the web server is behind a Linux server that is acting as a reverse proxy, or has configured the Akamai caching system such that the first request to the site goes to one of Akamai's servers [which run Linux], or as in the case of www.walmart.com has been configured to send a misleading signature.
