People don't buy many small computers just because they will run Linux (the geek population just isn't that large). People do, however, blow large chunks of cash on big machines just to run Linux. Mom-and-Pop can almost always undercut IBM on prices for small machines, and geeks are thrifty. You don't have to sell many million dollar machines to justify being involved in Linux development.

I think they should have given us a better answer than this. IBM should hire 10 guys like me, pay them $25 an hour, UPS them some equipment, and let them hack ThinkPads all day from home. I use a lot of Dell laptops, most of their machines work great under Linux.

How do other companies handle their Linux+laptops? Or don't they?

Less than a week ago, I posted some information to this site regarding the ongoing failure of their efforts to filter the site. Since then, my account has been effectively eliminated, as I expected would happen when I posted the information. Revolutionaries are seldom welcomed by the established power, after all.

No editor stepped forward to claim responsibility for the attack, but evidence points to Jamie McCarthy, as I was involved in a short exchange with him as a result of the aggressive editor moderation. During our brief discussion, "jamie" made the interesting claim that the bitchslap was never used on anyone except bots. This is a cynical attempt to deceive the slashdot readers.

Let's stick to the facts and examine the evidence:

While doing some unrelated research on the web, I happened upon this story of a truly unjust bitchslapping by either Hemos or CmdrTaco. I can only assume that "jamie"'s non-reply to my question about modslap indicates that he is aware that this had taken place. I understand that this is probably not news to several other posters. I must point out that Taco repeatedly refers to the modslap script as "bitchslap" in his correspondence. There is no almost no difference between the two.

The article describes an incident in which a user was bitchslapped for not moderating according to the beliefs of the slashdot editors.

Even as I was writing the article on slashcode, I was not aware of how serious the problems at slashdot are. Here is an incident in which the editors were happy to unleash a bitchslap on almost no provocation. I repeat, "If you don't mod the way he likes, your moderating days are over, and your karma plummets to bitchslap levels."

While the bitchslap script is apparently still in operation, modslap is probably not used in it's original form. I do know that karma can be lost for unsatisfactory meta-moderation, as I have seen this happen to one of my accounts, during a period in which that account had not posted or moderated anything. What this evidence does reveal is that the slashdot staff have no particular loyalty either to their readers, or to freedom of speech. They are willing to suppress your posts and your account according to their own opinions.

"jamie"'s comments reveal a confused attitude towards the meaning of freedom of speech, as does this excerpt from his website:

I believe strongly in free speech. I believe just as strongly that no one is required to nod along with a liar, and pretend that he is making valid points: to pretend that crackpots deserve equal billing on the marquee.

Evidently, Jamie McCarthy thinks that "crackpots" should be afforded fewer rights than us right-thinking people. I wonder what sort of free speech rights he thinks should have been given to "crackpots" like Galileo? Or modern "crackpots" like Richard M. Stallman?

Besides Seth Finkelstein, do any of the contributors to the now defunct censorware.org actually understand what free speech means? I advise Jamie, and the other slashdot editors to read, or re-read John Stuart Mill's essay "On Liberty" and Voltaire's "Essay on Tolerance" to remind them why free speech is not conditional on what is being said.

That's backwards.

Copyright isn't a "right" in the sense of the "right" to free speech, or the "right" to bear arms. It is a artifical monooply granted by the state in order to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts , not to protect some imagined "right" of an author to have absolute control over what other people do with something he wrote.

We're at the begining, and the minutia are yet to be worked out. but does anyone have potentially viable solutions?

Drop the notion of copyright entirely. Create a notion of right to royalties for commercial use of a work. This is, basically, the model used for performance of a musical work; I can sing "Dead Flowers" at home or at a party and not owe anyone a cent, but when I play it down at the bar (Leadbetters), Jagger and Richards get a cut (via BMI or ASCAP) of the evening's proceeds.

Copying a digital work is now just as easy as singing a song, and trying to prevent it requires the sort of intrusive police-state tactics it would take to make sure no one hums an unauthorized song.

Apparently, Craig has figured out how to spam PHP-NUKE webpolls, and done this two two recent "What's your favorite Desktop Environment" polls: one at Warped Systems and another at PCLinuxOnline.com, which was removed due to the controversy.

The evidence for this accusation can be found here, where the admin of warped systems notes that the web poll is being spammed by a user with the same IP address as Craig. Craig has also posted several other comments in the current thread, including Here and here, and a reply to the "anonymous coward" post that links to the second poll he spammed.

So, if you've had enough of Craig, send him a little note telling him how annoying and counter-productive he is being. Tell him how he's giving a bad name to KDE users, the Navy, Backpackers, and Virginians in general. And tell him if he is going to indiscriminantly rig polls and spam web boards, he should hide his tracks better.

Phew, at least I did something productive today.

The first robot ever to play snooker (related to the game of pool) was developed under a team led by Professor Khorosh Khodabandehloo at the University of Bristol, UK.

The Bristol snooker robot played a famous match against the then world snooker champion, Steve Davis of the UK. The robot, a customised IBM Model 7565, was severely handicapped because its operating envelope covered only about 87% of the table and also because freeplay in its joints limited its mechanical accuracy and repeatability. The strategy part of the robot was quite sophisticated having been based on advice from Steve Davis himself. It was able to make forward and reverse analyses of states of play based on support logic programming (related to but more powerful than fuzzy logic programming). The cue it used to hit a ball was actually a pneumatic piston powered by compressed air. Davis beat the robot easily! As an undergrad student, I helped to design, implement and test the robot's image processing software using the now defunct Automatix AV4 Image Processing System once made by Robotic Vision Systems, Inc..

The whole project was filmed and shown on BBC television on the Q.E.D. science programme of 16th March 1988. Extraordinarily there are now no webpages at Bristol University to celebrate this pioneering robotics project. Professor Khorosh Khodabandehloo has left Bristol University to run his own robotics consultancy. One of his former research assistants, Ken Ho, however, has made webpages about the Bristol snooker robot: here and here.

Okay. Where to begin. Hmmm...

First thing, is the Volare and Aspen were made from 1976 to 1980 as replacements for the compact, efficient and highly reliable Plymouth Valiant. They were not gas guzzlers, even when equipped with the optional 360 CID (5.9L) V8.

Now, they weren't as good on gas as today's cars, but technology has progressed. The Valiant, with its base engine, the legendary Chrysler Slant-6, was routinely capable of 20-25MPG; the Volare/Aspent, because of emissions controls, got a little bit less gas mileage than that. For their day, good gas mileage. And for their size, good gas mileage.

The cars that were really bad on gas were things like the big-block powered Cordoba/Mirada personal luxury cars, the New Yorkers, etc. of that era. That's because of the sheer size of the car (which was what people wanted at the time, and apparently again want) and the fact that they had three-speed transmissions with a final output drive ratio of 1:1. At the time, overdrive automatic transmissions were just starting to come out. So, yeah, they were gas pigs.

Rear wheel drive does not itself mean bad gas mileage. However, it does mean marginally more weight. And because the entire drivetrain is not assembled as a single unit like in a front-wheel-drive car, it does mean more time and labor going down the assembly line.

However, for the consumer, rear wheel drive is generally a good thing, though most consumers erroneously believe that the opposite is true.

In a front wheel drive car, everything - steering, suspension, engine, transmission, driveaxles, etc. are crammed into a small engine bay. That means that if you have to replace a starter motor, you might have to spend three hours taking out the front axles before you can get at it. It also means that in a collision, everything mechanical is probably screwed, and therefore the car is a write-off.

Finally, rear wheel drive handles better. Why? Well, if you lose traction on one of your front wheels, you lose the ability to steer. (Ever tried to steer with your front wheels locked up?)

With front wheel drive, how your car will handle on a snowy road depends on how much traction you have, where the wheels are pointed, and how hard you have your foot on the gas. Unpredictably, one or the other wheel can lose traction - when that happens, you lose steering in that wheel. And because there are so many variables for the driver to consider, it's tough to manage.

On the other hand, with rear wheel drive, there's less weight on the driving wheels. Put a bag of kitty litter in your trunk to prevent getting stuck. But the best part is that when you lose traction, your RWD car will fishtail predictably. Let off the gas, it straightens out. If you need to make a right turn, point the wheels a little to the right and punch the gas. With some practice, you can use this tendency to your advantage and control it completely.

(Do your practice in a snowy parking lot so that you don't hurt anyone else, until you've got the technique down.)

I grew up in Ottawa, Canada. It snows a lot there. And now that I live in Toronto, I can spot my fellow Snowbelters - they're the ones who *don't* slow down to take corners, they just fishtail sideways into them, and then accurately pull the car straight. I can take a corner faster in snow than I can on dry pavement.

The same thing occurs on wet or dry pavement, and you can use it to your advantage if you know how. It's a lot more useful than silly little front wheel drive parking brake donuts.

Why do you think it is that most police forces buy rear wheel drive cars?

Tom gave a rather interesting talk at a BioInformatics Open Source Conference (same mob that's into www.bio{perl|java|xml|python}.org and generic tools for hacking the genome) a month ago where he did discuss some of the relevance of peer-peer. The essence of peer-peer is an basically lack of centralised control (something that quite rightly annoys corporations) and dynamic reconnectivity (create new services by adapting old). Since I was there, I've scribbled down a transcript of his talk which may be of some interest (caveat ... it's released under OpenContent but Tom should be given right of first proof to make sure I didn't take down his words in vain :-) so treat it as rough working notes until then). Basically we had the old point-point connectivity (think 1-1 e.g. ftp) of the old days, then the client-server paradigm (think 1-n e.g. http) currently. Now we have an arbitrary n-n connection pattern where the programming style is not as clear. Different services have different patterns of usage and new protocols/frameworks are currently being explored like BXXP. However, the value proposition is not gated communities (aka portals) but how many other groups find your services valuable (ie commons). You can't churn users through a limited set of data portals (cough*hotmail*cough) and influence/restrict their movement. Remember the basics of commerce is built upon the premise of an economic good which is excludable and rivalable and peer-peer sorta tweaks that model quite seriously (hard to stop another peer replicating your "stuff"). This becomes a little more interesting when you're trying to search a couple of hundred terabytes of gene annotations, ESTs, microarray data, etc. as you want to combine both completeness (to maximise success) and minimal covering set (to save costs).

Why are the big names interested? As ever, they want new drivers of growth (notice the PC market is becoming saturated). As for the buzzword du jour crowd, well that's what a cluebat is for :-).

Fcheck FCheck is an open source PERL script providing intrusion detection and policy enforcement of Windows 95/98/NT/3.x and Unix server administration through the use of comparative system snapshots.
Aide AIDE (Advanced Intrusion Detection Environment) is a free replacement for Tripwire. It does the same things as the semi-free Tripwire and more.

This preliminary Finding Of Fact is an interesting devolopment, and has micros~1 crying in it's beer. I, for one, am happy to see Bill gates and micros~1 be exposed for what they trully are. Sneeky, snivling, childish thieves.

Acording to many analysts the DOJ has MS cornered and will push on with the case. While IANAL, I blieve that this case (including apeals) will drag on for years and will keep MSs' hands tied behind there back. They will be forced to sit back and watch as other companies move in on the desktop space. Look for OEMs to start customizing desktops. Look for venture capitol to consider companies "going for the desktop".

My hope is that the DOJ makes this a very very long and painfull process for micros~1. I hope they don't settle for a consent decree that will only end up (when MS violates that agreement) with everybody back in this same place 2 years from now.

There's a common misunderstanding that making software easy-to-use means making it less powerful. Many people talk about having to "dumb-down" linux in order to make it usable by the masses. This simply isn't true.

In the HCI field, there's a strategy for designing user interfaces known as "progressive disclosure." This design strategy presents a simple and limited set of options and actions to the user in the first "layer" of the user interface. As the user becomes more familiar and comfortable with the software, more features and options reveal themselves (possibly including a command-line). A really well-designed UI can support both the novice user and the expert. Progressive disclosure works much like a good teacher does; the basics first, then the intermediate to hard stuff when the student's ready to handle it. Designing UIs isn't about making pretty icons; it's about constructing a meaningful dialogue between the computer and the user.

If we truly want to raise the technological intelligence of the world population, then I believe this is the best approach. On the other hand, if we want to keep powerful technology in the hands of the techno-elite, then we can continue to toss new users into a CLI ocean of device drivers and kernal patches while smugly watching them drown.

Well guys, if this upgrade is bad publicity for Linux, sounds like we should do something. How about getting together and writing some hotel management software? Sounds to me like we've got a knowledgable poster in the field who could give us some specs. Could be a real coup if we pull it off. Goal: stop people wanting to `upgrade' to Win95!
