21++ ADVANTAGES OF HOSTS FILES
Over AdBlock & DNS Servers ALONE 4 Security, Speed, Reliability, & Anonymity (to an extent vs. DNSBL's + DNS request logs):
1.) HOSTS files are useable for all these purposes because they are present on all Operating Systems that have a BSD based IP stack (even ANDROID) and do adblocking for ANY webbrowser, email program, etc. (any webbound program). A truly "multi-platform" UNIVERSAL solution for added speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity to an extent (vs. DNS request logs + DNSBL's you feel are unjust hosts get you past/around).
2.) Adblock blocks ads? Well, not anymore & certainly not as well by default, apparently, lol - see below:

THIS IS GOOD VS. SPAM MAIL or MAILS THAT BEAR MALICIOUS SCRIPT, or, THAT POINT TO MALICIOUS SCRIPT VIA URLS etc.
4.) Adblock won't get you to your favorite sites if a DNS server goes down or is DNS-poisoned, hosts will (this leads to points 5-7 next below).
5.) Adblock doesn't allow you to hardcode in your favorite websites into it so you don't make DNS server calls and so you can avoid tracking by DNS request logs, OR make you reach them faster since you resolve host-domain names LOCALLY w/ hosts out of cached memory, hosts do ALL of those things (DNS servers are also being abused by the Chinese lately and by the Kaminsky flaw -> http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/082908-kaminsky-flaw-prompts-dns-server.html for years now). Hosts protect against those problems via hardcodes of your fav sites (you should verify against the TLD that does nothing but cache IPAddress-to-domainname/hostname resolutions (in-addr.arpa) via NSLOOKUP, PINGS (ping -a in Windows), &/or WHOIS though, regularly, so you have the correct IP & it's current)).
* NOW - Some folks MAY think that putting an IP address alone into your browser's address bar will be enough, so why bother with HOSTS, right? WRONG - Putting IP address in your browser won't always work IS WHY. Some IP adresses host several domains & need the site name to give you the right page you're after is why. So for some sites only the HOSTS file option will work!
6.) Hosts files don't eat up CPU cycles (or ELECTRICITY) like AdBlock does while it parses a webpages' content, nor as much as a DNS server does while it runs. HOSTS file are merely a FILTER for the kernel mode/PnP TCP/IP subsystem, which runs FAR FASTER & MORE EFFICIENTLY than any ring 3/rpl3/usermode app can since hosts files run in MORE EFFICIENT & FASTER Ring 0/RPL 0/Kernelmode operations acting merely as a filter for the IP stack (via the "Plug-N-Play" designed IP stack in Windows) vs. SLOWER & LESS EFFICIENT Ring 3/RPL 3/Usermode operations (which webbrowsers run in + their addons like AdBlock slow down even MORESO due to their parsing operations).

That would be like IHOP being required to frisk you down, take your smartphone and tablets, and then somehow check to see if you have the legal entitlements to all IP on your person.
IHOP is an interesting example. Sometimes, IHOP issues special IDs to employees for tax evasion, and the restaurants sometimes get burned down in search of profit.
Asking these folks to check your IP, legal or not, may not be too much of a stretch. Sometimes, it seems that they're up to no good at all.

IPv4 content? Seriously? Assets? You mean old routers that don't support IPv6? if businesses have been buying enterprise network gear that only supports IPv4 then they deserve to have stacks of them sitting around, but there's no reason that an enterprise still can't use a LANA scheme and use NAT-PT at the edge. I swear people make the whole IPv6 thing seem like it will change the whole world, it won't. The content will be the same folks, you can still go to youtube and facebook . Although Facebook isn't quite there as yet.
it's just an evolution and yes the ISPs and large enterprises need to support it. You can even get your ISP to support NAT-PT or use tunneling, it will just take time. There are many transition standards such as NAT64, SIIT and DNS64 that also help in all this "confusion" but honestly folks if we can just get the ISPs to adopt it widely most of this confusion will go away and while we have IPv6 Days this is more an evolution not a revolution for your favorite Web apps. If you're worried that you're stuck with obsolete software or hardware that locks you into IPv4, don't worry you can still use it. Yes it will take a little change but it won't be like having to set the time on your VCR. Wait, er uhm, DVD player. Er Blu-Ray player, yeah that's it.

Clearly you haven't looked very far. Windows has crept into all kinds of application that would make you think "WHAT!!!??? Who authorized this!!!???" Just a few off the top of my head include trains, cranes and ships. In any case here's a list of the 10 worst uses for Windows and they range from the silly to the life threatening. Like I'm sure you'd be all warm and fuzzy knowing that the radiation machine measuring your near lethal dose of gamma rays is running vista and hooked up to a network. Good luck with that...

Need more TECH schools / Vocational for IT not CS
Most tech schools tech real IT skills and have any number of different tracks.
CS tends to focus to much on coding and high level theory. Some CS programs are so much on the theory you get people who are poor programs out of them.
also they don't trun out people who can do ADMIN work / other IT work.

Now we need IT to be more like a trade with going education that is not just BA, masters, PHD, post doc, and other higher level stuff that you see at colleges. For some to have to take a 2+ year on going education with all the filler and fluff classes is not the right way to learn new IT skills and for working pro's it likely you can only find classes that fit your time at community colleges (most are only 2 years BUT DO OFFER classes as NON Degree) or tech schools or online classes.

I'm curious as to what they think could've been done to make that work. You feed a router ASIC designed for 32-bit addressing a 128-bit address, and you're going to get nothing sensible out.
The problem is the lack of transition mechanisms and the collective action problem that no one group has any incentive to implement them.

The impression I get (since I'm part of the group that runs the network for a major southeastern university) is that everyone should be running dual-stack for a while. Any infrastructure equipment you get that runs v6 should also be able to run v4 fairly easily. Any time we upgrade all the equipment in a building, or put in a new building, the addressing for the switches gets done via IPv6. For a majority of desktops, dual stack is available. For servers ... it depends (the issues there being more human than technical).
But we have the money available to us to have IPv6 capable equipment. At home, FiOS has yet to provide me anything that provides IPv6 connectivity natively (ignoring tunneling). From what I've ready recently, say what you will about Comcast, at least they're deploying it.
The impression I get from your post is that you have equipment (both infrastructure and otherwise) that's more than 10 years old. I feel for you; we do, too. To a large extent, I'm not so sure you want an OS that old to have any kind of Internet access anyway. From a "It makes me feel good" stand-point, it would be nice if there were an easily implemented v4-v6 translation method available, but there just isn't.
So, what am I trying to say? Well, I've never talked to the "IPv6 crowd," but I don't doubt that they can be obsessive. But need to maintain an internal IPv4 network? Oh my, that can't be that hard. IPv4 isn't going away any time soon, and I seriously doubt there's anything out there on the services side (IE, a website) that you couldn't easily get to via IPv4 (unless it's an IPv6 proof of concept site).
It's going to be outside-in. Until all the major providers of home internet are providing at least a majority of their customer base IPv6 access, it's not going to be that big a deal. And even after they're doing that, you've got to assume that they'll be dual-stacking it, too. At least for a while. -

Hotel WiFi Internet is Broken - BADLY
This is common: Seems the IETF conference in Paris had conference-goers fixing the hotel wifi: http://newsletters.networkworld.com/t/6464858/258822064/355639/0/
The last 2 weeks, I visited 6 different countries and hotels in those countries. I intended to use ssh as a VPN back to my home computer and do all the email, browsing over that connection. It worked flawlessly here in the states from friends homes and the local library.
When I arrived in Europe country "a", the hotel wifi was limited to the first floor lobby. Since I didn't bring any devices that could be plugged into a wall, I was stuck sitting in the lobby to surf. Port scans showed that a proxy was being used and only HTTP or HTTPS traffic were allowed. No SMTP, no ssh, and definitely no VPN (openvpn or L2TP-IPsec) were allowed. Broken.
Country "b" wasn't any better except the wifi worked from my room. No non-standard ports worked.
Country "c" had issues with coverage
... but by that time, I'd already been off the net for 5 days and was starting to not care at all. No ssh ports worked.Country "d" is known for being hi-tech. The internet didn't work at all in that very expensive, high-end hotel. I had a suite there. In the morning, I convinced the counter lacky to reboot the router in the lobby and everything started working - again, no ssh ports worked.
Country "e" was in Eastern Europe and the auto-answer on the phone in my suite had me looking for bugs in the room. It was strange to hear someone else talking through the speaker phone on the telephone when I hadn't made any calls. The phone never rang either. The suite looked nice in a once over, but all the details were cheap. They had marble floors and walls with plastic shower arms and plastic towel racks. None of the drawers or cabinets fit properly. Everything was just a little off. Still the city views out the windows were FANTASTIC. Oh, the internet only supported HTTP/HTTPS - no other traffic worked.
Country 'f' is my home country. Here there are liabilities for downloading copyright content, so I get the desire to filter the connection - even block netflix and bittorrent, but why block ssh and VPN traffic that business travelers require?
On my next trip, I'll do a few things differently:
* I will take my travel wifi-router with my. I'd assumed it wasn't needed this time. I was an idiot. Rooms that didn't have wifi coverage had rj45 ethernet ports.
* I will setup an HTTPS web interface to my desktop system on the normal port, 443.Seems many network providers are lazy and allow all traffic on port 80/443 and block everything else. Lazy and stupid. I've met a few guys in small companies who block everything except proxied traffic for ports 80 and 443. No other outbound ports are supported regardless of the protocol used. HTTP to port 82 fails. We have lots of geniuses working in IT.
This problem is big enough for a revolt. We all need to be vocal in our hotel reviews and tweets to get this fixed. Soon hotels will be advertising completely open ports on their internet if we are successful.

Windows HAS settings for "DoS/DDoS resistance"
Per my subject-line above (& yes, it IS "doable" even though "the infamous they" often state that a DoS/DDoS is the "unstoppable attack"... I state this, because you do NOT see either Microsoft OR Amazon "going down" to such attacks (they've got infrastructure to stop it)).
By "infrastructure", they have the settings I noted in place (I'll go into them later specifically), but, also such a VASTLY "overbuilt" setup networks + server failover redundancy & monitoring prepped for it. Examples from the "horses' mouth" are quoted next:

I have a friend that bought a WP7 phone (she used to have an iphone, and loved it, but got a little tired of seeing the same thing every day and wanted to try something new) 'cause it seemed very slick and flashy in the store—only to find out it's insanely buggy / flaky / ill-designed in everyday use. She updates the software regularly and has actually had the hardware replaced multiple times, but things never seem to really improve.
She's not sure whether she'll go back to iphone or try some android thing next, but she's adamant that she's never getting another winphone...
Can you tell us which phone this is? There have been very few updates to WP7, so 'updating it regularly' sounds very strange. And the buggy phone hardware you describe would be great to know what is to avoid, have never heard about this. I have a WP7, find it at least as stable and user friendly as an iPhone - and between the few of us that have

(source)In other words: EVEN allowing for a "biological" difference to explain for the relatively low (and further declining) participation of women in Computer Science, the open source community shows an even sharper disparity - if 25% of computing jobs were held by women, and if 18% of undergrad CS degress are being awarded to women, why are so few of the qualified women choosing to further participate in the Open Source community? And why does that number continue to decline? Please explain the biological basis for some new evolutionary event that happened back around 1985 that would explain this?

You never see [fragmentation] applied to any other area, such as Automobiles, where there is even more diversity and choice.
First, for some things, possibly including automobiles, more choice isn't always a good thing. Second, "fragmentation" is much more of a problem for developers and not consumers. Third, "fragmentation" doesn't apply to things like automobiles because they don't run a common OS that developers write apps for. "Fragmentation" is referring to the fragmentation of the OS, not the hardware choices.
Can you imagine if there were something like CarOS that all automakers used, but tweaked the hell out of for their own cars? It would be just as "fragmented" a market and as much of a pain to write apps for.

Imagine what a 66 ft. Telescope could see!
"So here's (link at bottom) a surveillance telescope that DARPA is proposing to provide CONTINUOUS (that's what's new) real-time coverage of any spot on earth at a resolution of 3m (the example given was to detect Scud launches). Of course in order to do this, it would need to be in geo-sync orbit which necessitates a whopping big lens, in this case 66 FEET ACROSS!
So how come I've never heard about this "membrane optics" technology before? (From the picture it appears to be able to make the "lens" extremely thin and presumably lightweight. No word on how it could be folded or rolled up). I notice that it doesn't seem to have a sun-shade or cowling, doesn't this ruin the contrast? Most importantly, if it was pointed UP (towards deep space) rather than down (towards the ground) could it be used for astronomy? A 66 foot space telescope could be able to directly image earthlike worlds!
What's also interesting is that they claim that, at this resolution it would be able to monitor an area of 100km x 100km. That implies a gigapixel detector (not new but the largest I've ever heard being placed in space). Anyway, at (only!) $500 million, it's gotta be in the same price range as the latest "keyhole" spy satellites. Write your congressman today!"
