Re:Umm more then that...
Especially when 4 gb Compact Flash is cheaper (~$350). Slower, absolutely, but requires no battery and is therefore more non-volatile.
"More non-volatile" just doesn't sound right... -
Non-PCI solution.
Show me a version that doesn't take up valuable PCI real-estate, make it mountable in an internal 3.5" bay, and then I might be interested.

4GB, populated, probably fits in a 2.5" drive bay let alone 3.5". There's actually versions that have 2.5" connectors and mounting brackets so you can use them directly in a laptop, but I couldn't quickly google a price on them. -
Re:Next logical step for quiet PC's.
Because a laptop is about $500 more expensive then the equivilant desktop?
Heck, I have a spare AGP video card, spare 80G hard drive, spare soundcard --- combine it with an AOpen Metropolitan XC Cube EY855-II for $225, and it's looking like a pretty good deal. -
PentiumM in desktop vs Mobile Barton in desktop
So, I've been running a AMD Mobile Athlon XP Barton (link) in my desktop for about a year, in a standard Socket A motherboard (NForce2 based). It is easily overclockable, and runs cooler than my previous main CPU, an Athlon XP 1800.
Is the PentiumM that much better, or is it just the CPU du jour? -
Re:It's not the PSU.
I ended up getting an AeroCool VM-101 dealie for my graphics card, and it's made a world of difference in the amount of noise my machine makes. Installation was pretty straightforward once I popped the original GPU fan off the card. Well worth investing in if you have the previous generation of gfx card or earlier in your machine.

There is a markup, of about 20 percent. Not 150-200% as you have stated, however.

Re:Dual Layer Drive? It would be nice
Sure, on a spindle of at least 10 or 15, i've seen them for as little as $3.50 a piece.
in fact - a quick check @ newegg.com shows $52, shipped for a 15 piece memorex spindle w/ no annoying m.i.r.s.
but, it's not like i'd buy many of them right now, anyway. i'd like to have the capability for the occassional use now, and have the functionality for the future when prices are much lower.
i remember paying over $5 per CD-R at one time, but it didn't keep me from wanting the technology available in my home, it just made me more selective with what i burned to disc. -
Re:Dual Layer Drive? It would be nice
This is easy enough to achieve.
Get the cheapest Mini. 499.
Go to www.newegg.com.
Add a Toshiba DL dvd-r drive: 39.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82 E16827130034
Add an external firewire/USB2 enclosure: 35.99

For sanity add 512MB crucial memory: 42.68
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82 E16820145485
Check out and assemble.
Total Price: $617.66
Having ltbarcly to guide you in the right direction? Priceless.
(use 256mb dimm from mini in linux experimental box)
This is actually better than the superdrive, and anytime you want the latest and greatest optical drive you only have to scrounge up enough green to purchase the OEM version to put in your enclosure.
Even better than that is that you can use this drive on any computer you have, which is perfect. The only downside is that it is sortof bulky so it might not replace a superdrive for a powerbook, but for a mini you would have to be one anal dork to care.
I'm using this exact setup right now and it works perfectly.
As an added bonus you can use the external enclosure with ata hd's as well. -

Meanwhile Joe Developer..
..nearly has a seizure when he discovers that the commercial development licence for KDE is $3300 for one platform. (You're much better off using Gnome based Linux distros and doing development via cross-platform APIs like wxWidgets).
Because, you see, the development cost is $0 for using the Windows API (link to the Windows SDK download) and $0 for Visual C++ (link to the command-line compiler).
And for the cost of one KDE development licence you could buy 22 OEM copies of Windows XP Pro at $149., or 35 copies of Visual C++ .NET 2003 at $95 if you wanted an IDE to develop in (although personally I'd go with Eclipse and MingW32).
Who's expensive now? -

Re:Cheaper?
All you need is a moltex to floppy adapter (it's basically the same cable, only with a different connector). For example here is one for $1.69.
-
And you missed out one as well.
You missed out DVD-RAM (which is actually my current favorite format for backups - for me they're the new floppies).
Although I also have a wonderful LG drive that does all CD and DVD formats in one (so I buy DVD-RAM disks for rewritable use and DVD+R for permanent burning as the booktype can be set to DVD-ROM - this means that disks play back in most drives that normally only work with pressed ROM disks). -

Floppy + Mem Stick Drives
I like the new Floppy + Memory Stick Drives.
- MemCard Floppy Drives
They fit right in the drive bay, and basically can accept about every current form of memory media. -
Re:Not gone...
The media is a lot cheaper, and support is near universal.
I bought a 512MB USB drive for $70 last year. That is approximately 13.6 cents per megabyte. NewEgg has a few floppy disks. The ten pack costs $6.50, or 65 cents per disk, or 45 cents per megabyte. This is over three times the cost of a USB flash drive per megabyte. How is a floppy disk cheaper? Also, how many computers do not have USB drives anymore? Talk about universal support, the majority of computers have USB and a version of Windows or MacOS that support these drives out of the box.
The floppy is dead and will not be missed.

Re: Complaint about CPU Price
few people like paying $1000+ for a cpu alone, for example.
No one WANTS to spend that much on a CPU, except for those who want bragging rights. I think the point that the parent poster makes is valid. Very few people would complain about getting the top of the line AMD64 FX-57 chips - there would be more "oohs" and "aahs" amongst the
/. crowd. In fact, those chips go for over $1100 each at Amazon or New EggFYI, the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ is also going for over $100 as well at New Egg
For anyone with the need or desire to have a fast top-end CPU (or plenty of cash to burn), $1000 isn't a big deal.

All that said the whole cache memory thing bothers me. if nothing is using the cache memory, then why does it go out to swap?
Try setting /proc/sys/vm/swappiness to 0.
I set it to 100 for fun (I had never seen my 1GB machine touch the swap) and it was entertaining to see the kernel swap out my programs for more disk cache. Heheh. -

You're right. I've looked at the shipping costs just now, and there are not as many tricks as there once were.
However, look at this: GENERIC USB 2.0 Cable, 10FT. Price for an item that costs about 58 cents in large quantities? $2.58. Shipping cost? $4.99. -
PCI Micro
PCI Micro has served me well when it comes to smaller computer stuff, like cables, fans, thermal grease, and cheap, durable mice and keyboards. You can usually find a free shipping code floating around if you dig for it.
Newegg is still my favorite for bigger parts, like motherboards, memory, and DVD burners.
Amazon is usually pretty good about having cheap, quality storage media, like blank DVDs or SD cards.
Pricewatch can find good deals, but only if you're willing to dig through lots of shady stores posting the "buy 10 units" price and jacking it up when you just want one.
And Reseller Ratings is a must when buying from no-name retailers you find on pricewatch. I also like how Reseller Ratings has clear specs on everything, and incorporates Epinions reviews along with their price comparisons. -
Newegg...If you are buying new equipment there is no reason to shop anywhere else.

Re:Without a doubt...
NewEgg also sells the FireXpress from CompuCable. I have one of these and love it - it allowed me to migrate from my old PowerBook G3 to a G4 effortlessly, and now I use it for backup/transporting files.
Looks like NewEgg is out of stock at the moment, but I'm sure you can find it at other online retailers.
-
Re:Without a doubt...
I think you linked to the wrong product, perhaps you meant to link to this?
-
Without a doubt...
Without a doubt the Coolmax 2.5" at newegg was the smallest, lightest, most-powerful I've seen, for under $20.00.
It came with all of the cables (usb and firewire), extra screws, a screwdriver, a faux leather carrying case, and it runs entirely on bus power. One of the cables has two usb ends so you can draw power from two usb ports to drive it, instead of using an AC adapter, but you'll only need one.
Its so small and light, I actually keep it velcroed to the lid of my laptop as a 3rd IDE drive when I need the storage.
Absolutely amazing purchase.
One thing though, STAY AWAY FROM COOLDRIVES.COM!. I bought a drive enclosure from them, they shipped me the wrong product, and a broken AC adapter. Their website is useless at finding contact info, so I called the manufacturer of the drive, and they said I was out of luck.
I gave them negative feedback through Yahoo's feedback mechanism and within MINUTES, someone from the company called me and was using profanity at me and calling me all kinds of wonderful names (details of the libel and slander on my blog).
Stick with newegg and partners, amazing service, fast shipping, and superior products. I couldn't be happier with my purchase of this drive enclosure. The vendor included everything I could possibly think of, and priced it very aggressively.

Re:Not true!
First of all the 4200+ doesn't offer the best price/performance ratio of the Athlon x2 line - the 4400+ does.
It's not about a 2x cost processor giving 2x performance. You can't buy two 820's and use them in one computer, so it's moot. Even when you do in a multiprocessor environment, you do not get exactly double the performance.
Also, you could also buy an old celeron processor for 1/4 the cost, and it'll run at 1/3 the performance. But would you really want a slow Celeron, and wait longer to do all your tasks, just because the price/performance ration is better?
Consumers think with their wallets, such as "I have $500 to spend on a processor. What's the best for my money?"
What does AMD offer at the ~$256 price point? What does Intel offer for ~$585? Who wins at each level in relevant benchmarks for the intended user?
Now if you could show that the Pentium D 820 has the performance equivalent of an Athlon x2 4400, then that would put them in competition.
This would also blow the x2 out of the market. Why pay double for the same performance?
This price/performance landslide victory was true for AMD's Athlon XP and Athlon 64 processors over Intel's offerings. At every price point, AMD beat out Intel. Their Athlon FX processors still wipe the floor with Intel's Extreme Edition processors. Yet AMD didn't gain ni market share, and this was due to Intel strong-arming AMD's potential mass market customers with cash payoffs and coerced exclusivity deals.
Thus, the lawsuit. -
Re:yeah but....
what about machines that lack dvd-roms?
Go buy a DVD-burner for $41 not only can you burn the iso in the torrent, but you can then boot off it.. maybe you prefer a black front panel $45 or silver $49
perhaps you'd like a full retail box for a few dollars more.
Appologies if the capabilities of said drives vary --; and a few are 'one day sale' links... they go up in price by $4 if you missed out on the 'one day sale' price.
Mind you this is for an NEC brand dvd burner, from a large and well rated online store. So what if your computer doesn't have a DVD-rom? buy one. $50 costs less than a single copy of most software/games, and since you can use this drive to burn and then install linux, you're good to go. -

Re:Use a *separate* firewall box.
Your best bet would be some Athlon Socket A shuttle barebones PC with integrated graphics to which you could add a multiport PCI ethernet card. Or, you could plug an external router / hub into the one included ethernet port (if you need more than can fit on a PCI card).
This one might do nicely, though it is more than $100: Shuttle SK43G Socket A(462) -

Re: Backups
There is really a very simple solution. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N8
2 E16822144365
Default installation backs up every local drive automatically Full system restore to an earlier version Saves historical backup versions Simple diagnostics check the health of your drive with a single click
It stores 300 GB of data and even more compressed.
It has a 1 Touch feature so you dont have to copy paste or deal with any obscure backup software.
It does CRC checking to make sure everything it in tact after the backup.
Tapes are OK in a business environment where you need 3-7 copies of your backup and a swap schedule. But for home backups I would say Burn them to your favorite Optical media and stick that in a secure offsite location the utilize and external drive backup for daily checks every month or 2 you can run of another optical backup and put that in your offsite location. -
Re:Ridiculous
No major manufacturer doesn't offer drives with a 3 year warranty, but most (all but Segate?) offer drives with 1 year warranties. WD's special edition drives have 3 yr warranties, and Maxtor's MaxPlus drives have 3 yr warranties, but their lower end drives are all 1.
Examples:
250GB WD from Best Buy
120GB WD from Best Buy
80 GB Maxtor from Best Buy
80GB Hitachi from Best Buy
Actually, I looked at 6 drives at Best Buy's website; 4 had 1 yr warranties, and 1 was a Segate I never expected to.
300GB Maxtor from Newegg
120GB Iomega drive from Newegg
120GB external WD drive from Newegg
