More on Microsoft's Get the Facts FUD campaign, and my response to their desperate attempts.
And as a footnote (bootnote for our friends across the pond), a little background on our dear Ms. Didio and her "independent studies" and lets not forget our dear Booby Winderle while we're studying analyst independence.
If Windows and Linux are "about equal" in a report put out by our esteemed Ms. Didio, then hold on to your mouses because the floodgates are about to open on what Linux is really doing to the commercial market. 50% growth rate year after year after year, and this is the best Ms. Didio can manage? Perhaps she decided she can no longer bury the truth and its time to start shifting position lest she be exposed to the "decision makers" as just another Microsoft hack like those of us in the FOSS community have already seen? -

Agreed.
Being Novell they have street cred. Netware gives them a wedge into big businesses which no other Linux distro has. And I think they know and understand the businesses' needs better than any of the others, and have the tools to complement Linux to cater to those companies (Zen, identy management and such).
I think Novell and SUSE make a good fit. SUSE now has a desktop platform which they can work WITH, and not AGAINST.
They're clearly aware of it, and their CC EAL4+ certification was part of their plan, a certification which I think only SUSE still holds (among the Linux distros).
What the article could have mentioned is that Novell is proving to their customer that they can do without Windows, migrating internally to Linux desktops (see Joe Barr's http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/03/23/1 755222). Um, just a little nitpicking, about SMP.
In this story (slashdot article here) where there was a MySQL benchmark conducted, quite scientific one so not just three images + 5 sentences slapped together, which concluded that basically Linux with kernel version 2.6 outperforms every other platform in the matter of SMP, although Solaris is performing well regarding SMP to, just a few percent behind.
I'm not saying that Solaris' SMP support is bad, just that it's quite silly to point it out as a positive side, in comparison with Linux, when Linux performs even better. -

Newsforge, an OSTG site, had this story two days ago. In fact Joe Barr, OSTG's own epic hack, interviewed Novell execs directly.
True to form, it is a terrible artice from Barr but, it was several days earlier than what your posting. Surely the left hand knows what the right is doing at OSTG. Doesn't it?

Technology is the solution to the erosion of our rights. If it's mathematically impossible to find out what you said, then... they won't know what you said. (Same for P2P. If you use Freenet you can legally share anything. Why? Because nobody knows (or can ever know) what you're sharing and what you're downloading. Laws don't solve problems!) -
Re:Just a Kernel?The article mentions the "linux operating system" a lot. There is no such thing as the linux operating system. There are operating systems that use the linux kernel. There isn't even a tangible GNU/Linux operating system in my opinion. There are operating systems that use the linux kernel and other GNU software. Each distro uses a different kernel with different patches and different versions of libraries and other software that's important for the distro. So RHEL != SuSE != Debian != Slackware.

By just windows... they don't mean just the windows kernel but everything that comes on the installation cd. It doesn't make sense for them to compare windows to a kernel. They should make it clear that they are comparing Windows XXX to Red Hat YYY though in the assesment. Even if they say Windows is better/more secure/whatever than Linux when they are really comparing it to RHEL, it only makes things WORSE when people on the OSS side start talking about Linux as an operating system. It just reinforces the position that Linux = Red Hat. That's not good. They mention IBM and HP as supporters of the linux operating system but that really talking about RHEL and sometimes SuSE for them.
There's the Linux Standard Base specification which is close to a "linux operating system" but ISV's aren't certifying to the LSB they are certifying to specific distros.
One of the main points I'm trying to make is how is it fair to compalin when someone like microsoft mixes the meaning of linux up but not when other people refer to the linux operating system? I don't think it is. Just how it is bad for Google to punish certain types of search engine tricks but use them themselves on their sites.
It's not just bad when Microsoft does it... it's always bad in my opinion. Comparing windows to the linux kernel is bad, comparing windos the the linux operating is bad too since it's not a tangible thing, although Unix to Linux kinda makes sense. That last link is a short article worth reading. It gives some insight on how the big guys push linux. It reinforces another point I'm trying to make. People love IBM but if you've ever had IBM try to sell you linux, it's usually because they know you want linux, they push much harder with AIX in the *nix space. I'm not saying that's bad... but then complaining when people like sun do the same thing doesn't make any sense.
Big corporations are involved in Linux now and there's a lot of big money at stake for some people with linux, open source, and related work. The whole XXX is our friend and YYY is our enemy is going to hurt the community. Things were different when people were just passing around floppies or ftp'ing things to each other. I think it's unwise for the OSS community to look at what red hat, suse, sun, ibm, etc are doing and evaluate the action... not just take it for granted that they're a 'friend'. There's a set of principles and beliefs that go with f/oss software that helps keep it what it is. There are even legally binding licenses to insure that happens. Just because corporations start using open f/oss doesn't mean they all of a sudden pick up all those principles and it especially doesn't mean that they have to stick to them if they decide it's not in their best interest. It's good that big business has jumped onto f/oss but it's in their interest to try and control it as much as possible and you see that happening quite a bit.

Are you joking, clueless, or just a troll? NetBSD falls on its face when hit with anything more than the lightest loads (see the sysbench 10M rows test). It's even worse than OpenBSD, which is quite an "achievement".

After much development and four previous releases, FreeBSD-5 has finally gone stable with version 5.3. But don't mistake a stable codebase with stable software. While the development team will no longer accept major changes to the base system, FreeBSD 5.3 still has bugs and problems.
FreeBSD is a complete Unix-like operating system entirely developed by a single large team of programmers. This is in stark contrast to GNU/Linux which, as a complete operating system, has no central, cohesive developer base and is packaged in myriad different ways by myriad different distribution projects and companies; and proprietary Unixes, which are closed-source, restrictively licensed, and work on a comparatively small number of usually proprietary hardware architectures. FreeBSD has historically been clean, fast, reliable, and scalable. It's easy to use, learn, set up, and navigate from the command line, has more than 10,000 software programs in the Ports system, runs on a wide variety of hardware, and can easily be used for either a desktop or a server.
The transition to 5.x
Until the release of 5.3, the most recent "production release" was the FreeBSD-4 series, which is presently at version 4.10 and has been deemed the "Legacy" release in the wake of the 5.x branch going to STABLE. FreeBSD-5 was supposed to be a grand introduction of new technology -- a revolutionary improvement to the tried and true 4.x branch -- but soon after it left the gate, it got caught up in developer politics and failed implementations of too-ambitious theories among other questionable design decisions, causing some developers to fork the FreeBSD-4 project into a separate and more focused operating system.
The ULE (which is not an acronym; its full name is SCHED_ULE as opposed to the older SCHED_4BSD) scheduler continues to have stability and performance problems and was totally disabled instead of being made the default process scheduler in 5.3 as planned. The mix of threading subsystems still yields problems with efficiency and stability. Also, the networking subsystem may now be multithreaded and therefore faster on SMP systems, but users with some implementations of the 3Com (SysKonnect/Yukon) gigabit LAN chip are now unable to access their network at all because of new bugs that have popped up in the driver; other SysKonnect/Yukon users have problems under heavy network traffic, along with those using Intel Pro/1000 chips. Unfortunately all of our test systems use these network chips for onboard LAN; coincidentally they are two of the most popular gigabit LAN chipsets used on modern motherboards from major manufacturers. We also experienced lockups during boot if a custom-compiled kernel did not have SMP enabled on a Hyper-Threaded computer. A list of these and other errata can be found right here.
Considering the long list of significant problems in FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE, it would seem irrational to recommend that anyone switch a production server from 4.x or any previous known-working 5.x release to 5.3. Just the same, the FreeBSD project maintains a migration guide for this purpose.

Since the introduction of the FreeBSD-5 branch, FreeBSD enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the day when the new codebase would stabilize. After much development and four previous releases, FreeBSD-5 has finally gone stable with version 5.3. But don't mistake a stable codebase with stable software. While the development team will no longer accept major changes to the base system, FreeBSD 5.3 still has bugs and problems.
FreeBSD is a complete Unix-like operating system entirely developed by a single large team of programmers. This is in stark contrast to GNU/Linux which, as a complete operating system, has no central, cohesive developer base and is packaged in myriad different ways by myriad different distribution projects and companies; and proprietary Unixes, which are closed-source, restrictively licensed, and work on a comparatively small number of usually proprietary hardware architectures. FreeBSD has historically been clean, fast, reliable, and scalable. It's easy to use, learn, set up, and navigate from the command line, has more than 10,000 software programs in the Ports system, runs on a wide variety of hardware, and can easily be used for either a desktop or a server.
The transition to 5.x
Until the release of 5.3, the most recent "production release" was the FreeBSD-4 series, which is presently at version 4.10 and has been deemed the "Legacy" release in the wake of the 5.x branch going to STABLE. FreeBSD-5 was supposed to be a grand introduction of new technology -- a revolutionary improvement to the tried and true 4.x branch -- but soon after it left the gate, it got caught up in developer politics and failed implementations of too-ambitious theories among other questionable design decisions, causing some developers to fork the FreeBSD-4 project into a separate and more focused operating system.
The ULE (which is not an acronym; its full name is SCHED_ULE as opposed to the older SCHED_4BSD) scheduler continues to have stability and performance problems and was totally disabled instead of being made the default process scheduler in 5.3 as planned. The mix of threading subsystems still yields problems with efficiency and stability. Also, the networking subsystem may now be multithreaded and therefore faster on SMP systems, but users with some implementations of the 3Com (SysKonnect/Yukon) gigabit LAN chip are now unable to access their network at all because of new bugs that have popped up in the driver; other SysKonnect/Yukon users have problems under heavy network traffic, along with those using Intel Pro/1000 chips. NetBSD is the opposite of what you said. They do not port to a million new ones, in fact they're way behind Linux in new architectures (ia64, ppc64, HPPA,
..), but they DO have solid support for the architectures they've covered. Even the Dreamcast port is highly usable. I'd do a little research before claiming it's not thorough in arch support - they have port-masters that must watch over their port and ensure things don't break, as a bare minimum.
Sorry, that's just not true, it isn't uncommon for ports to break or be not well supported on NetBSD.
Conversely, look at a Linux distro like Debian - they don't release until all their supported architectures are stable (though IIRC they don't do quite as many as NetBSD claims to, yet).
Some archs missing is a bad thing, but they're on the TODO list and will work when they're done. On the other hand, NetBSD was ahead of Linux in some archs, amd64 being a fine example. And it was solid right away, too.
Sorry, Linux development was being done before the x86-64 instruction set was made public. Linux supports the advanced features that make Opteron worthwhile, like NUMA memory access.
No, NetBSD 2 appears to fall over when faced with any real sort of load, so I don't know how people can have servers doing real work on it. -
