Useless as in "linux"
Yes, they are useless on the Dell XPS M1710, but only if you have linux running: I've been searching for a way to control them from my linux operating system and the only information I found that it was already damn hard to do it from Windows using some kind of Dell Windows API (see http://www.notebookforums.com/post840284.html#pos

Re:Third-hand hearsay...
How is "I now have 3 of these 9400's in my shop, My new replacement and 2 brand new fresh out of the box systems for clients. All 3 of them have the exact same problem." (a quote from TFA) third-hand hearsay?

Linux on Notebooks Forum
You'll find a great resource for this info on the Notebookforums.com site. Personally, I run FC4 on a Sager 5520 and love it, but here in my office we've got folks on Ubuntu, Gentoo, DSLinux, etc. The suggestions about drivers are important, but it's an academic matter and easily resolved most of the time.
Good luck. -
Old newsAs you can read here this is really old. I've using it for a long time without problems, I've even patch the linux kernel to use the minimum-safe voltage I obtained on windows. There is no performance hit, as you are just making a fine adjustment of voltage based on your real CPU instead of Intel safe adjustment based on mean CPU values.
The main benefit for me is lower temperature, I have a Dell D800 with a 2.1Ghz centrino plus a GeForce 4200Go, using also powermizer under Windows (or nvclock under linux) to underclock the GPU I get no fan activity at all when surfing or editing files. When I need power it just run faster at higher voltage (still lower than default for that multiplier).

Nothing new for now...
This procedure was described some months ago here, but without obnoxious "i spread my article over infinite pages in order to get more clicks" practice. I have been undervolting my Dothan a long time, using this little patch and some modifications to vidc. This keeps the fan off most of the time, saves some battery life and has no other impact whatsoever.

Go-L == Scam
um, yeah. you don't work for them. riiiiiight.
;-)
Go-L is a known scam business, selling(?) over-hyped, under-powered equipment
as other-worldly, "killer" rigs. their web-site is a photoshop composite of product
images from other manufacturers/vendors with configurations that are at best, suspicious.
i was going to quote directly from their website, but it's really too much effort to refute
a scam-site when careful shoppers will see that everything is "pre-order".
here's a link from 2004:
http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=142 10
and one from 2003:
http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=132 020
and from 2005:
http://plex.us/outbursts/liebermann.html
and if my poor memory serves me, there was also some noise about this on
some of the other enthusiast sites/forums; some review sites asked for
systems to review and benchmark but were 'rebuffed', to put it politely.
there was one actual review of a notebook they purported to sell, but overall, the
evidence is largely not positive.
their weird history of claiming ultra-high(read: impossible) performance systems
with conflicting equipment specs and configurations lead many to assume
they were fakers, or at the very least over-representing their products. there are
reports of buyers who paid large sums($20k) but never received anything.
i'd ignore these guys for now.
that said, there are solid state disks available for sale, but at extraordinarily
high cost. a google search turns up
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,790,000 for solid-state disk. (0.30 seconds)
which i won't even begin to quote here. ;-) -

Re:Laptops really for gaming?
Sager is the US seller of clevo notebooks in the US. They are the people who provide the notebooks to retailers such as Hypersonic, Alienware, and a few other retailers. Sager's direct-consumer tech support is admittedly pretty bad, but that's because they do their business through retailers, and prefer to do consumer tech support through them. (Besides, the retailers give 200 dollar or so discounts off of Sager's prices as is.)
I myself use a Sager NP9860 as my main workstation. It's simply the highest quality laptop I've ever used. Well worth the absurdly high price for the performance it gives. It's heavy as hell for a laptop, not meant to be portable, but I carry it around school and work all day as is. When the day's done, having a laptop that can play the latest games maxed out at 1680x1050 is fairly nice.
I eagerly await the release of the NP9750, which is an AMD-powered equivalent to the NP9890.
If you want to learn about notebooks, the best place to discuss them is going to be at NotebookForums . It has a large, active, friendly (providing you don't make fun of certain user's favorite retailers.) community willing to discuss just about anything about laptops. -
Re:Your journey starts here
PC Torque (a Sager notebook reseller) lets you choose to purchase with or without the Microsoft tax.
http://www.pctorque.com/
They also run a popular forum site that covers multiple notebook vendors (Sager, Alienware, Dell, etc.), and has an active general area for discussion about running Linux on notebooks:

Sager/Clevo
The 8xxx notebook series of Sager (AKA Clevo, Alienware, etc.) have had TV inputs for years.

PC Torque
PC Torque has about the best customer service in the laptop industry. They sell both Sager and Acer notebooks. I got a Sager 5680 from them a year ago and it has been the most solid machine I've ever owned (and I've owned A LOT of machines, from Macs to store-boughts to homebrew). You aren't going to find a better place to discuss laptops than NotebookForums.com.

Okay I compiled it and tried the softwareit works pretty well. A word of warning is that the netgear ma401 pcmcia card i was using needed a firmware update to be used with hostap. be careful where you do this!!

SagerGo for the Sager. Sager is legendary for their customer support system. PC Torque is a Sager reseller, and although they don't have the 2880 and 2885 listed on their site they can order them. PC Torque hosts TalkNotebooks, where all sorts of laptops are discussed. It is the best source for Sager tech support. However, if you can't find an answer there, Sager provides a system like this:
- Call or email them.
- A real live tech who builds the computers will call or email you back!
