Re:Yeah, be a man!
Also the jury system has been totally corrupted in this country. Look up FIJA or go to http://nowscape.com/fija/_600w... The "Jury" is asked if they will return a GUILTY if they broke the letter of the law and if you mention FIJA or ask any questions about the concept of a jury they will through you OUT!

Re:Some Are Uncomfortable With The Truth
You miss the point of what I was trying to say. The Internet is us. Though you choose to focus on the negative aspects of who we are, worms, popups, piracy, agenda-driven corruption, scams, spam, primal absurdity, and porn are a part of who we are.
If you want a good read, here's God's Debris, a thought experiment from Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert.

Re:*sigh*
2) Techies have a serious communication problem. They believe in free without copyright, right to pirate, etc, etc. Take that attitude to lawyers and guess what answer you are going to get.
I'd have to say this isn't just a problem with techies/geeks/nerds/whatever you want to call us, the problem is also with people who have a "the nerd is talking so I might as well zone out and think about banging my mistress until he's done" attitude.
I think it's a lot more fundamental than that. They're not ignoring you because you're a nerd or because they don't think you know what you're talking about. They're ignoring you because you bore them - That's largely your failing because you can't relate effectively with them not their failing because they should sit there bored and soak in something that may be beneficial. If you had to listen to yourself explain things, you'd probably be bored too.
(When I say "your" I refer to a typical hypothetical socially-inept nerd, like myself. I obviously don't know you personally.)
Scott Adams sums it up pretty well in his book God's Debris (the chapter titled Relationships starting at page 105 in the free download.) Basically he points out the difference between "idea people" and "people people" and posits that "idea people" bore everyone, even each other, although what they're saying may be much more useful than the typical banter that people toss around. If the people you talk to "zone out and think about banging [their] mistress until [you're] done", it's because you're boring - That's probably primarily your problem, not theirs.
That said, it is nice when the people recognize their weaknesses and seek out someone more knowledgeable before making a decision on a subject they're clueless on...

jury nullification
In P2P file sharing, copyright infringement is taking place. It is almost certainly NOT fair use. If you don't like it, you really need to be writing your members of Congress to change Copyright law.
Going to congress isn't the only way to change laws. Probably the most important part of citizenship is on a jury and when on a jury the citizen has the most power. If a juror believes a law is wrong, and don't let any judge tell you otherwise, it's their duty to vote innocent and send the message the law is bad. This is called jury nullification. Thomas Jefferson, in support for jury nullification, once said (also on the wiki page) "I consider trial by jury as the only anchor yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution." I've been called up twice for jury duty though I was not picked to sit on a jury and I was hoping to be picked to sit on a drug trial, so I could say drugs laws are wrong, but now I'd love to be picked to sit on one for one of these trials.

Re:yes, well...
This is a snippet from Bertrand Russel, titled "Why I am not a Christian"
The Moral Problem
Then you come to moral questions. There is one very serious defect to my mind in Christ's moral character, and that is that He believed in hell. I do not myself feel that any person who is really profoundly humane can believe in everlasting punishment. Christ certainly as depicted in the Gospels did believe in everlasting punishment, and one does find repeatedly a vindictive fury against those people who would not listen to His preaching -- an attitude which is not uncommon with preachers, but which does somewhat detract from superlative excellence. You do not, for instance find that attitude in Socrates. You find him quite bland and urbane toward the people who would not listen to him; and it is, to my mind, far more worthy of a sage to take that line than to take the line of indignation. You probably all remember the sorts of things that Socrates was saying when he was dying, and the sort of things that he generally did say to people who did not agree with him.
You will find that in the Gospels Christ said, "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of Hell." That was said to people who did not like His preaching. It is not really to my mind quite the best tone, and there are a great many of these things about Hell. There is, of course, the familiar text about the sin against the Holy Ghost: "Whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven him neither in this World nor in the world to come." That text has caused an unspeakable amount of misery in the world, for all sorts of people have imagined that they have committed the sin against the Holy Ghost, and thought that it would not be forgiven them either in this world or in the world to come. I really do not think that a person with a proper degree of kindliness in his nature would have put fears and terrors of that sort into the world.
Then Christ says, "The Son of Man shall send forth his His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity, and shall cast them into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth"; and He goes on about the wailing and gnashing of teeth. It comes in one verse after another, and it is quite manifest to the reader that there is a certain pleasure in contemplating wailing and gnashing of teeth, or else it would not occur so often. Then you all, of course, remember about the sheep and the goats; how at the second coming He is going to divide the sheep from the goats, and He is going to say to the goats, "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire." He continues, "And these shall go away into everlasting fire." Then He says again, "If thy hand offend thee, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into Hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched; where the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched." He repeats that again and again also. I must say that I think all this doctrine, that hell-fire is a punishment for sin, is a doctrine of cruelty. It is a doctrine that put cruelty into the world and gave the world generations of cruel torture; and the Christ of the Gospels, if you could take Him as His chroniclers represent Him, would certainly have to be considered partly responsible for that.
There are other things of less importance. There is the instance of the Gadarene swine, where it certainly was not very kind to the pigs to put the devils into them and make them rush down the hill into the sea. You must remember that He was omnipotent, and He could have made the devils simply go away; but He chose to send them into the pigs. Then there is the curious story of the fig tree, which always rather puzzled me. You remember what happened about the fig tree. "He was hungry; and seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, He came if haply He might fin -
Re:Remember the constitution?
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
And where is the part about PRIVACY ? I missed that part.
That would be the part i marked in bold. The founding fathers could hardly predict the technological state of today, but the intent and spirit of the constitution is very clear. It hardly takes any great mind to realize how "papers and effects" translates into digital data.
The founding fathers were big believers in Checks and Balances. And for a very good reason. The government cannot be trusted! The founding fathers knew this very well.
That's why the US has trial by jury. You did know that the jury has veto power over laws right? That's because the US is supposed to be a democracy and that is the final check and balance to be applied to a law. That the jury accepts it as just. The PATRIOT act does away with all that though. No jury. No trial. NO CONSTITUTION. NO HUMAN RIGHTS.
More violations of the Constitution probably occurred during Abraham Lincoln's four years as president than during any other cohesively defined era in American history. Many have pointed out that Lincoln suspended habeas corpus to jail war protesters, shut down hundreds of newspapers that disagreed with his war, established a draft for the first time in American history (except in the seceded South, which had a draft a year earlier), instituted restrictions on firearms, and sent troops to violently suppress the New York draft riot. He also used the war to push through the "American System," a program of de facto nationalization of the transportation industry via massive subsidies to corporations that would agree to build "internal improvements" - railroads, waterways, and canals. The victory of the Union in 1865 not only established that, contrary to popular political theory in the antebellum era, the federal government was completely supreme over the states; it also established that a president could do literally anything he could get away with, no matter how many liberties were suspended, innocents jailed, and people killed in the process.
These are examples of abuses of power. It most certainly is not legal, and the fact that he got away with it means nothing except just that. Crimes that someone got away with do not change the constitution. They do not mean we should ignore or accept new crimes. -
Re:Cartoons
I started out the same way as you, but was also forced to look into what is actually taught by the Koran. In fact, the prophet taught and practiced the spreading of Islam by sword. Some excerpts from
Fight non-believers
9.123: O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).Kill non-believers
4.89: They desire that you should disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that you might be (all) alike; therefore take not from among them friends until they fly (their homes) in Allah's way; but if they turn back, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take not from among them a friend or a helper.Killing Idolaters
9.5: So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.Smite the neck and cut fingertips of unbelievers
8.12: When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.Threat of punishment for not going to war
9.38: O you who believe! What (excuse) have you that when it is said to you: Go forth in Allah's way, you should incline heavily to earth; are you contented with this world's life instead of the hereafter? But the provision of this world's life compared with the hereafter is but little.9.39: If you do not go forth, He will chastise you with a painful chastisement and bring in your place a people other than you, and you will do Him no harm; and Allah has power over all things.
48.16: Say to those of the dwellers of the desert who were left behind: You shall soon be invited (to fight) against a people possessing mighty prowess; you will fight against them until they submit; then if you obey, Allah will grant you a good reward; and if you turn back as you turned back before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.
There's much more.
I know some muslims and I like all of them. I doubt if any of these self-proclaimed muslims have actually read the Koran though.

Re:A "victim" is taking the law into their own han
It is illegal when it is an attempt to defraud, which this is.
Interesting... By this logic, it is illegal for a person getting mugged to fight back -- because his actions would certainly qualify as an attempt to harm the attacker. And harming others (intentionally!) is quite illegal, is not it?Heck, these people, fighting the scammers for fun and profit are, probably, in the wrong too, in your opinion. They are wasting the scammers' time with transactions (downloads?) "that never finishe" and denying them access to people, they want to access.
HBO is using large numbers of IP addresses in the scheme to deny Bittorrent users access to files that they wish to download.
Distributing these files is illegal. Can I not leave fake jewelry in my house to distract the thieves? Are you saying that you think that the false posting promising a free motorcycle is legal?
First, it would probably be legal -- if against CraigList's rules. But this is not about a "free motorcycle" -- this is about a free stolen motorcycle. The downloaders are well aware, the stuff they are after, can not be offered legally. If CraigsList becomes used to trade/give away stolen property, child porn, unlicensed weaponry, than yes, "poisoning" its database with baits would be not only acceptable, but a good thing...
One thing is obvious -- you simply don't feel that there is anything wrong with what HBO is fighting. You are smart enough to not attempt to defend these people's actions directly, so -- like a good attorney -- you attack the prosecution instead. "Your honor, the officer was not wearing the standard issue uniform belt that day, therefore the items he collected on the scene can not be used as evidence."

The Facts about ROULETTE COMPUTERS!
Hi there folks Roulette Computers are legal in most parts of the world! They are of course illegal in Nevada, NJ and California due to the exploits of the team in the 1980's which was well documented in > 'The Eudeamonic Pie; By Thomas A Bass, an excellent read by the way! Roulette Computer History goes way back to 1955 when the first WEARABLE Computer was proposed for beating the game of Roulette by Edward O Thorp(Author of Beat the Dealer) and Claude Shannon( The guy responsible for communications Protocol, without him the internet would not exist). A Analogue device was constructed in 1966, but failed practically because of the limitation of the hardware. URL Also around the same time, Russian Teams were developing Roulette computers, some of them gaining around 20% advantage consistantly. Then the 'Eudeamonic Pie' was set up, a team of ambitious young scientists, electronic buffs, programmers, mathematicians to create the ulternate dream, a computer that could predict the outcome of the game before the ball lands! http://www.thomasbass.com/work2.htm Heres another team that did it in the early 1980's> http://nowscape.com/blk/roul/index.html Later the software of the Eudaemonic Pie was found to have a small bug in the code which had caused the Kim Computer to behave badly and not return the correct predictions. The Code was later taken over by Fred Britain and Laurence Scott ( Visual Ballistics using only your eyesight) and revamped and set nito a block of resin, now called Copernicus, this gadget had a massive edge on the old style wheels with deep pockets which created hardly no scatter! Eventually it had its days, with only a handful of units around, some selling for $20,000 dollars a time, its History came to an abrupt end whith the introduction of modern wheels with shallower pockets, Casinos setting their wheels level and checking for titled wheels. All othe casinos were wise to the fact that tilted wheels were enabling these Roulette Computers to gain a massive edge and for the Roulette Computer operator to set up pretty quickly. We then had Newton Roulette appear in London, selling their system on a Compaq PDA, although the system never actually worked, they fizzled in just over 6 months. Who am I, I am the owner of 'Phophecy', now in my 20th Year of Research And Development of Roulette Prediction Software and Roulette Computers! I have taken it to new heights, I can play within around 4 spins on ALL wheels, play level, tilted, continuous ball changes, alternate and sporadic with different Croupiers and still obtain an edge of around 100% on the exact number( On average I will hit 1 in 18 on the exact number), or chosing one of my Sector playing programs, between 40%-70% on a sector! Anyone wanting the Roulette Mathematics can obtain it for free at my site and build their own Roulette Computer if they wish! I am Proud to be a NERD! Re:Vicious machine requirements...Regarding your
.sig:(R)ule in Hell or (S)erve in Heaven [R]?
Do u rule in hell? With the right combo of hermetic magick, judeo-christian mythology, and most important SLACK! (send $99.95 to Rev. Aaron for more information) you can have the best of both worlds- you can RULE IN HEAVEN!
Ask Yehushua ben Yosef (aka Jesus Christ, Sun of God etc etc) for more information. He can hook you up, phat.
Alternately, you also have the options of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints. You know, those whacky Mormons. See, if you live just the right kind of life you don't go to hell to rule or serve. Nor do you go to heaven to serve. Instead, you get to go to the Celestial Kingdom and rule over your own planet! HELL YEAH!
Pretty badass if you ask me. The one most of you anglos call "Jesus" got to run a nice little earth-like planet called KOLOB. I am not sure if he got to name it, or if the transcendent aspect of the god-of-gods gets stuck with those kinds of jobs- relatively menial, but still interesting at times. -
Re:Unbelievable...
LOL! What? You must be a European!
Only when said government turns against you, do they suddenly become "the enemy".
If they are not your friend, what are they? You do not make any sense. How does the USA fund terrorism? I hear this all the time yet fail to see any evidence?
And how did the USA destroy the governments in the Middle East? What are you talking about?
Iraq never had terrorist links
The last time I checked there was a well known terrorist group in Northern Iraq that the USA uprooted. Ansar Al Islam, or some such nonsense.
Also, If memory serves me correctly, Saddam did send checks to suicide bombers families in Israel congratulating them. checks
Those aren't terrorist links!?!?!?!? LOL!!!!!Well, Islam doesn't teach that
Huh? Perhaps you should try reading the Koran. Koran. And why are you dragging Christianity into this? The USA does not tell you what religion to follow; you are free to follow any religion you like, including no religion at all. It is your choice.
Was in planning before Sept I'm afraid.
Yeah, I would believe anything a Pakistani Diplomat says, especially since they are the ones who put the Taliban in power! Perhaps you should learn to not believe everything you read.
You need to wake up before people like Bush destroy everything that America is supposed to stand for. We admire that stance, we always have. But now, we are genuinely scared of you.
Well, the USA is scare of arrogant, spineless, spectators, who have a jealousy of America so embedded into their little minds they fail to grasp the realities of the large world. If there was no United States, the world would be a much worse place, care to argue that based on your in depth understanding of world history?
Is the USA perfect, no. But when you are the most powerful nation the world has ever seen, you have a responsibilty to make the world into a better place. No country gives more foreign aid than America. No country so readily commits the lives of their own Armed Forces to aid those oppressed peoples of the world. No country takes in as many immigrants as America does. Don't insult America by taking a moral high ground that you so clearly do not have.

Re:You mean we're going to have to wait 500 yearsIt might seem strange to you, but it's possible to have doubts regarding the Big Bang theory, yet not be a creationist. I know, sounds crazy (isn't that what this is about?), but it's true. Grote Reber suggests the Big Bang theory is wrong because the cosmological red shift is due to the Compton effect rather than the Doppler effect. The Big Bang theory has many holes that have yet to be solved, some of which are...
- There are observed objects older than the suggested 10-15 billion years ago that big bang happened, including Stars and globular clusters in our galaxy
- Measurements of the uranium content of stars has produced a minimum age of the universe of at least 12 billion years, whereas the best measurements of Hubble's constant produce an age of 10 billion years
- our galaxy is rotating at a speed that only permits from 45 to 60 rotations since the big bang, which (according to Mitchell) is not a long enough time for it to achieve its spiral shape
- There are some very large chains of galaxies spread throughout the universe. It is believed these large structures, like the "great wall", would require many hundreds of billions of years to form.

Re:Gravity and Heat
By 'we', you mean you and the publishers of various UFO magazines?
Perhaps he refers to the majority of people who realize that they can only observe a relatively small portion of the universe. And anyone with common-sense can easily realise the 90% figure is used metaphorically so get a clue.
And what UFO magazine did you pull "dyson spheres" out of? Its a pretty safe assumption that dyson spheres won't make up any of the so-called "dark matter" out there.
Perhaps some people really need to read a bit more, some suggested material:

"the russian shuttle that they copied from nasa (dont remember the name) "
I asked google, and it responded: buran and also pointed to this detailed comparison and photo page.
One of the buran's seems to be in Australia, another in the russian 'star city', and maybe another mothballed somewhere else (or maybe there is just one real one that has been moved around finally ending up in Australia plus maybe a mockup or so).
Interesting pictures: compare the buran cockpit with the new shuttle cocpit or even the old one. -

Re:just semantics
Its just semantics. And not even published semantics at that.
The real breakthrough will come when this kind of science is no longer publically judged by the people who make the theories. There is huge evidence pointing to the big-bang being totally wrong, i.e. the cobe background radiation measurements were 1000 times smaller than bigbang theory makes them...did steven hawking mention this in his book? did he fuck.
Having just read up on plasma cosmology, a theory that can be almost entirely proven in the laboratory, then reading up on big-bang which has only faith and ignorance to back it up, I find it hard to imagine any breakthrough will come very soon while the people that choose which papers/theories are made public refuse to choose any that disagree with their own personal agendas.
if you're interested read this book The big bang never happened
I don't think its entirely correct...it skips over the hubble expansion too quickly...but it certainly is an impressive theory, and most of it is proven.

Re:Viva La Revolucion
"The tree of liberty must be periodically watered with the blood of patriots" -Benjamin Franklin
Not to be picky or anything, but that was actually Thomas Jefferson. And he was right... and so are you. When a law is wrong, it MUST be challenged and destroyed; that's why they saw fit to include a little thing known as "Jury Nullification" in the founding laws of this nation. Basically, it means that a jury can find a defendant fully and completely guilty of a violation of law, but refuse to punish him for it because they don't think that law should BE a law. And you will NEVER hear it mentioned in a court of law, on TV, or anywhere except in a few books and movies (and, now, a few websites). Try to guess why. That's right: if We, the Sheeple, knew about it, why, we'd be chopping down laws all over the place! Can't have THAT, now can they? Undermining their hard-fought-for and bought-with-lobbyists laws like that would take away some of Their power, now wouldn't it?
So what better forum to spread knowledge of its existence than right here on good old slashdot?
