NPR has a solid commentary and some nice video
which is definitely worth checking out. Really amazing stuff!
The BBC story also has some interesting points about why jellyfish in particular are being looked at.

Re:CDs?
Oh probably they do. But do they need to be done by the labels? Wouldn't any number of small management agencies handle things just as well? And more to the point, does this function justify the hideously over-inflated prices charged by the record labels? Getting back to the original point, if they're adding value, then they have to be adding from the consumer#'s viewpoint, and I'm far from convinced that's the case here.
It seems like the labels don't necessarily do a lot to really help a band succeed. They just mooch off of them as much as possible and see where things go. If they get big, you can probably mooch more for a while, until their contract is up anyway. If they don't get big, then you just keep collecting whatever money you can from them anyway. Interesting view on this from one of those bands that never quite made it really big here.

Re:Debt to society?
Then you haven't heard what's going on in Miami:
In Miami, a causeway in the middle of Biscayne Bay has become home to one of the county's least desirable populations: sex offenders.
What began a few years ago as a stopgap solution has become de facto public policy. For sex offenders with few resources who want to stay in Miami, there's just one option: an encampment of tents and shacks on the Julia Tuttle Causeway.
The encampment got started a few years ago, when Miami-Dade County, like other communities across the country, adopted an ordinance banning sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of anywhere that children gather.

Look at Dade County for What Can Go Wrong
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106689642. An aggressive law requiring sex offenders to be > 2500 feet from certain types of establishments has resulted in a sex offender tent colony under a bridge. Oh yeah! This is the type of side-effect these laws have. But no one really cares because it works to keep them out of their own neighborhood and they perceive that their children are safe. Think of the children. Don't consider that you have effectively eliminated any chance of them returning to normal live after they serve their sentence. Thankfully there are cases like http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/10/17/trailer.sexoffender/index.html where an entire trailer park has become home to sex offenders. The locals don't like it but hey they created the laws that lead to this being the only solution. Pushing sex offenders into these "communities" reminds me of the early treatment of the Jews in Poland. Anyone else see these as sex offender ghettos?

Re:I think this is great
The NSA perfoms illegal wiretaps and then the government consults the public over web cookies? What next, rapists asking their victims if they'd object to being given a hicky?
Go, go "team freedom"!
What the AC wrote. This absurd universe we live in.
It gives the public (electorate) the impression that there is transparency and freedom to choose. I am grateful for every piece of illusion that makes reality more bearable. It sure beats the frontal lobotomies that were popular in the 1940s and 50s to treat moodiness and hyperactivity in children.

As Stupid A Question As The Assertion
From brain dead NPR: Bin Laden Son Reported Killed In Pakistan
A senior U.S. counterterrorism official tells NPR that without a body to conduct DNA tests on, it's hard to be completely sure. But he characterized U.S. spy agencies as being "80 to 85 percent" certain that Saad bin Laden is dead.
>>Only if you had a sample of DNA of the victim before death, morons. What were you doing with bin Laden's son prior to his "death"?

Re:The Law is complicated.
Exactly, let the doctor decide and worry about how to pay for it later. If it is a non-cosmetic procedure and you really do need it the Hospitals and Doctors will always work out some way for you to pay for it, even if your insurance company won't. I have never met a doctor that won't fully pay for a patients care if the patient really needs it.
(emphasis mine) WHAT?! Now I know you're just making shit up. Let me give you a hand with that: In 2007, 62 percent of all personal bankruptcies were linked to medical bills.
-
Stupid Idea is Stupid
This is another silly case of using something not because it's well suited, but simply because it is there. A conversation with an avatar? A "Professor" reading a script? How crazy is that? Think about how different that is from a RL consultation where the doctor has to *look at* and *listen to* the patient. Why not act those in RL? The same with making a virtual OR when they could just show them a real one.
Take this quote: 'You can take risks that aren't safe in the real world and teach more complex subjects in three dimensions.' Hey, RL *is* 3D. SL is a poor 2D imitation. A medical dummy *is* 3D. SL is not.
But what's really silly about all this is the PR this is generating for a really dumb idea, when they deserved to be slapped around. All you need to do is find a ridiculous way to work Twitter/YouTube/Facebook into your press release and you'll get widespread coverage.
Check this book by Jerome Groopman called "How Doctors Think". He describes how doctors *should* give consultations. This SL idea is going to teach med students some really bad habits. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=8892053 -

Re:Yeah
Jesus, can we really not start this again? First off, we've done the research last time this topic came up. The research cited in the last article we had stated that you would have to have a smaller concentration than 50 mW/cm^2 to keep it from having obvious impact to a single tested species of bird. This means that you would need to have a radius on your receiver of greater than 357 M for one of these beams. Again, this accounts for a single species of bird that similar microwave power was tested against. Not to say it won't affect other species or migratory patterns. The math is here. The article was here. The research about the birds was here.
My huge argument to this is that it SEEMS safe enough, given enough provisions. Is the research on it complete? Is it biased? Will it be implemented honestly and responsibly by PG&E, whose only responsibility is making as much money as fast as possible?
I can't answer those questions. But I do know they'll be hacking off as many corners as they can get away with. I've never dealt with them personally, but from other power companies I have (Ameren, I'm looking at you), I can guarantee that every dime that can be removed from the system and put in someone's pocket will be until something goes wrong, then when people start dying from it, (again, Ameren, I'm looking at you), they won't buckle down and dip into profits. They'll take it out on the consumers and jack the rates 20%-50% to, well, maybe fix the issue, maybe not. I still don't know if my power lines are going to fail for weeks next time there's some ice. -
Look at the grid
Just look at it.
Turn off the proposed new lines and tell me how that's our grid today in essentially 2010. On that map, the only route between the east and west coasts is a little line, under 500kV in western Nebraska.
The ONLY ONE.
So what's the solution to our energy problems? Biofuel, captured coal, wind, fission, fusion, space, treadmills? It doesn't matter!
If we can generate limitless power in Montana, but can only get it to North Dakota (next door) by either really small lines or by routing it though Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Idaho (again!), Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, then North Dakota... how can we do anything?
It doesn't matter if we should be using wind and carbon sequestration (I question wind as the panacea it seems to be these days), we'll still need a modern grid. That mess than happened in the north east a few years ago shouldn't be possible.
It's not a choice between better lines and green energy, unless you only count stimulus money. And isn't big interstate utility projects the kind of thing the federal government should be doing?
Clean power isn't useful if we can't transmit it more than 100 miles. The areas not near some sort of clean power source will just keep using coal.

Think about this
Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage have been stirring up a lot of hate via their radio programs. Savage has even been banned from entering England. A couple of physical attacks have been linked to fans of the shows. What if this attack rate went up? Suppose 100 people a month were attacked? 1,000? 10,000? How many before laws are passed to stop or reduce it?
I didn't used to be for the "Fairness Doctrine" whereby radio stations had to present both sides (it was repealed in 1987). However, the polarization is getting ugly in this country. I notice it in my own family and relatives even. The Fairness Doctrine does not censor ideas, but merely requires alternative points of views. It may be a good middle-ground.

This isn't always true. I don't condone killing a human, at any stage of life, I am a theist, but I have many atheist friends who feel the same way. So I am against embryonic stem cell research, and it doesn't have to do anything with my religious beliefs. Re:So what is it?Have you read the horrific account of Dr. Walter Freeman? To quote one of the articles below:
The "ice pick lobotomy" was, according to Ole Enersen, performed by Freeman "with a recklessness bordering on lunacy, touring the country like a travelling evangelist. In most cases," Enersen continued, "this procedure was nothing more than a gross and unwarranted mutilation carried out by a self righteous zealot."
The disgust I feel for this barbarism is intense; more intense than that for electroshock therapy as practiced in the 50's. Absolute barbarism. Re:The thing about a carbon tax...
Inflation doesn't take energy or food prices into account.
Also, the amendments are using the rate of 2009 as the base line so in order to go over and be suspended, you would see an effective increase of 18% from 2008 plus however much the increase is from the end of 2008 to the end of 2009 in two to three years. It isn't the 2% you are thinking of.

Re:Automation
"The fancier they make the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." -Scotty
Sounds nice, but statistically the truth is exactly the opposite here. Over the years, planes have become increasingly safe and reliable with more technology (complexity), accident rates have steadily declined. And even today, the highest-tech aircraft are the safest ones - the big new ones flown by major airlines. Colgan Air 3407 wouldn't have crashed if the pilot hadn't been allowed to nose-up in response to a stall - a patently stupid thing to, which the A330 prevents according to another post in this thread.
Meanwhile, on the other side, we have the argument that this Air France A330 crash was due to a software failure that forced the crew to fly without the autopilot. This is theory is highly speculative, yet even if true, all it means is the autopilot is not directly to blame because it wasn't operable during the crash, i.e. humans were in control. So I don't understand the anti-automation spin on this story at all.

Re:water in Georgia
Certainly it is best to avoid the heat of the day, but 9 or 10 at night will do as well and not make you late for work (not a problem for me since I telecommute, but for most it was).
Instead of standing up late people could get up early. As for myself I don't work and am on disability so it doesn't matter much to me either. Last year I mostly watered before hitting the sack, which was in the morning most days. This year I've only watered a few tymes.
A soaker on a timer works well for avoiding the hot hours. Adding pine bark over the soil cuts way down on evaporation.
I hadn't thought of using a timer, but I do use mulch. Many stores sell mulch, Home Depot has bags of cypress, coconut husks, and peanut shells among others. However my city cuts whole trees down as well as trims them then shreds the wood. It then takes the mulch to various locations throughout the city where people can collect it.
For the washing machine, I rigged a garden hose onto the machine. I attached the hook shaped end of the original drain hose onto the end of the garden hose so we can hook it over a 50 gallon trash barrel that sits just outside the door.
You use the barrel as a cistern then. They're not for greywater but gardening centers around here sell cisterns that store water from the rain runoff from roofs. I'd like to do both, collect rainwater and greywater.
Speaking of cisterns, until recently it was illegal to catch rainwater in Colorado. The state recently made it legal. Now many people will question why it was illegal. That's because of the Colorado River Compact. The compact is an agreement between 8 states in the west, mostly desert, to share water from the Colorado River. It used to be that the river drained into the Sea of Cortez or Gulf of California. Though by treaty Mexico has rights to water from the river, very little water ever reaches the Gulf.
I'd like to re-run the tub drain as well, but I'd have to tear out half of the bathroom to do it.
Because of leaks we had to do that to my mother's house. The bathtub, sink, and the toilet all started leaking so we ended up breaking through the concrete floor and digging out the dirt under it to fix the leaks. I didn't know better then, but if I had to redo it I'd set up a cistern to catch the water.

Re:This will be nice
Yes, but I doubt if they use a significant amount of helium.
How much do those ballons use?
Compare to cooling down a NMR magnet, which consumes more than 1000 liters liquid ( > 700,000 liters gas).
Sadly there is a helium shortage, not so much that we are hitting the point of end of resources (which will eventually come), but because not all the natural gas fields that could capture - are capturing helium.

Flu Vaccines vs Anti-Viral Drugs
Using the new In-Cell growing technique many companies seem to be coming up with vaccines in a shorter period than earlier. Medicinenet has an informative article on Flu Vaccines and immunization candidates, and goes on to say why they are required. This is a good read to understand why vaccination is being given importance here. The 1918 "Spanish" Flu epidemic Virus which is very similar to the recent outbreak was re-engineered in a laboratory in 2005 by Dr. Jeffery Taubenberger and colleagues at AFIP. Comparison with Avian flu strains led to the conclusion that Human Flu Virus strains are derived from Avian flu virii.
Among young people and children Flu vaccines claim to be 70%-90% effective, while this drops down to 30%-40% in people aged over 65 who may have other secondary complications. Hence the scale of vaccination required for the present outbreak (which has been repeatedly noted for not being as lethal as the 1918 Flu strain) may be entirely different covering only those in a risk category. More stress is on drugs that help in combating the Virus in an infected individual. These are usually amino-acid chain suppressors like Tamiflu. There has already been mobilization and distribution of the drugs to combat such an outbreak. The WHO has done a recent donation of drugs to Nigeria.
The role and importance of the Vaccines that would be available is not yet certain. It seems that the stress is more on treatment. Insofar stress on prevention without the involvement of Primary Medical care personnel. Only those who suspect infection have been requested to visit quarantine or medical facilities for treatment. The WHO's present stand with the Flu Virus has been a direct result of criticism during the second widespread Avian flu H5N1 attack incidents in 2006. -

Grace Wangit is not a good thing.
I'm sure Grace Wang would agree with you.
In brief, Grace Wang was an international student at Duke and dared to try an initiate a discussion between the pro-Tibet and pro-Chinese sides of a protest. After being attacked on forums such as mitbbs.com "Online Vigilantes" decided to bring these attacks to the real world by posting her personal information (her student visa application) and providing maps to her parents' house (which was defaced, causing her parents to go into hiding).

Right, lets leave it to private enterprise, so they can do for spaceflight what they've done for the financial services industry.
Nice try, but it was mostly Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae that fucked of the financial services industry.
Even still, maybe the private sector would do for space flight what it's done for the computer industry?
Also, even comrade Obama disagrees with you here, because as he's cutting NASA's budget he's giving out hundreds of billions of dollars to private companies in an ill conceived attempt to stimulate the private sector. Maybe you should tell him to stop spending so much money bailing out that "superstitious bullshit", and divert more of it to seemingly better causes, like the war on drugs, paying single moms to have kids, paying farmers not to farm, and sending people to Mars for no good reason.

Re:Good.
Straw man. I didn't say anything about marital problems. And anyway you are lying about being in possession of such data.
I used the term "marital problems" as a euphemism.
Global Sex Survey: Satisfied in the Westbut I do sense that American women seem pretty expensive.
And ultimately that's all you've got, a sense. A sense that could be explained by any number of other factors, such as the high cost of living in general in the US.
Are those the values of the women in question, or are they the values of their fathers who are trying to jack their price back up?
Dowries aren't anywhere near as common as they used to be in those countries. But the women, as a rule, still aren't sluts. Hell, in India where sex is almost as easily available for cheap, the dowry goes in the other direction - i.e. the bride's family pays.
