I just wrote up my experiences with it...
I dumped my notes to my blog. I use an Ericsson T616 under AT&T's service. Works well enough. The solution I came up with involved horking a few scripts from Knoppix (thanks to Kyle Rankin for the excellent book Knoppix Hacks, which inspired me to try using GPRS in this manner. Made life real easy as I didn't have to mess with PPP chat scripts and the like - yuck.

It's been done before. (Like any parody except "All your baked potato taste like peanut butter" hasn't been done....)

GWB: All your no fly zone are belong to us.
GWB: You are on the way to destruction.

Atari 2600 Adventure, Zork and DoomMy top three games that affected me the most are :
1. Adventure on the Atari 2600. The first game that showed me there was more to playing computer games than simply pressing the fire button at the right time. The dragons looked like floating ducks, your character was represented by a single green block and the "sword" looked like this an arrow
... but, in the '70's it was soooo cool. Play a cut down version online here.2. Adventure (zork) played at university on the VAX/VMS system - kind of zork I and II combined into one uber zork !!. The game that simultaneously caused me to fail and then later pass Computing 121. I failed COMP initially because I was OBSESSED with the game and never did any work. I later passed the course with an A (the second time round) because, after failing the COMP course, my account with the university computing system was taken away and I couldnt play anymore. So I went out and bought my first "real" computer (TRS80 Model III) and taught myself to program so I could write my own adventure game. The skills I learned doing that ignited my interest in all things computing and allowed me to get an A in COMP 121 the second time around. Play it online here.
3. DOOM. Having passed computing and eventually a BScDipEd I went into teaching. Early one year a kid brought in DOOM - Now most teachers would frown upon the theme and the obvious violence. I loved it !!! I got a bunch of year 9 kids together and we hooked up some old 486dx33 machines with thin ethernet just so we could play network doom - I told the principal I wanted to "network the computers" for school stuff - but "really" I just wanted to play Doom !!! Trying to get IPX (and later IP) working on a DOS/windows for workgroups network, mucking around with network cards, black cables, termintors and net.cfg files taught me (and the kids) heaps and heaps and heaps. Eventually we got a real network, linux servers and quake and the whole thing
... I now support 6 servers, over 200 workstations and over 700 users, but nothing compared to getting DOOM networked that first time and blowing away the kids with a shot gun!! -
ALL YOUR BABES ARE BELONG TO BSD
How can BSD be dying when it has girls like this supporting it? The best Linux can come up with is an obese penguin. What are those Linux people smoking? What we need are more free software babes like her. This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. Even this old Unix guru looks like he's having trouble keeping his wang under control when close to such an amazing babe. This girl has to be one of the hottest ever! I can tell you that I'll be installing BSD after catching sight of her! Linux will never be able to compete until it ditches the fat arctic birdlife and gets itself a mascot like this little hottie.

DEMAND MORE LINUX CHIX!
Don't you think open source software would be more popular if it were advocated by girls like this instead of old guys with beards? What we need are more free software babes like her. This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. If we do have to have the old guys with beards, we could at least make sure they are plenty of hot chicks too. I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she make you hard? I know this little hottie floats my boat!

Re:This must be a model's idea of hell...
"I spoke with her for about 10 minutes - and she was a way cool geekchick. Turns out she works for LinuxCare - but took a day vacation and volunteered to work with BSD. She even paid for the costume herself! Now that's dedication."
I guess that would be the second theory, then!

Re:Picturebook
I'd agree with Rusty on the Picturebook. I've got a C1VPK - it's got the (fairly new) 667Mhz Crusoe, and it's got more than enough power to do what I need out of a subnotebook. And the battery life is good, too. On the battery the unit comes with (the "small" battery) I can watch a DivX movie on my trainride home (just over an hour trip) and have about 40% left on a charge. And this is under Linux; which, as Rusty said, has a horribly broken APM implementation on the Sony Vaio line. Longrun works nicely - the jogdial is fabulous - the camera's a great toy... but the ability to be banging out Perl scripts while listening to MP3s on the trainride home without worrying about my battery is one of the best things about it. I keep meaning to write a Linux-Picturebook HOWTO, but I can't seem to get together enough spare time to do that.
I've upgraded mine to 256MB of RAM using the third-party IO (Japanese) upgrade - that made a ton of difference in performance. I understand there's a new Picturebook coming... it's supposed to have the 733Mhz Crusoe.
And of course, the box runs fine under Windows. [ick]

Re:Hmm (AKA Games will be the death of society)You spoke of gamers:
They are not socializing the same, and the undoubted result is the loss of things like Slashdot. There are good and bad effects here, and I think this shows how the internet can be negative - people using the internet imagine they are socializing when in fact they are not. This makes society a less sociable place, which has a number of bad effects:
I used to think the same way. I'm not so sure anymore.List of how self-involved gaming will cause lawlessness, issolation, recession, apocolypse, and bad rashes.
There is a great online comics scene out there, and some of the best are all about modern gaming. Comics like Penny Arcade and Player vs. Player (PvP) are consistantly funny and high quality. What's more, they give a shared experience, and often foster a community.
In a bit of nostalgia-meets-the-Internet, Gamers have resurected one of the shining examples of bad localization. The folks who translated ZeroWing did an awful job, and the results are so bad they are funny. The phrases recently became popular again, and you'll hear cries of "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" across the Internet.
These same gamers shut off the connection for a while to fire up the photo editor and create some great parodies. Many are posted to message boards to be appreciated by fellow fans. Some of them made a dubbed version, others made a techno soundtrack (search for "Laziest Men On Mars, "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"), and others made a hilarious flash movie.
All this creativity was spawned by this later version of gamers. More that ever, I think creative people are meeting and interacting online, and the new games are, at worst, better versions of television, and, at best, a tool for creating a common experience, so that strangers can meet each other.
All this is a bit off-topic, but I think you are worried over nothing. I'm hoping they do a good job with the new TradeWars, which I remember as fondly as other Slashdotters (...in my day, 2400 baud modems, 1 hour just to download 1 meg of porn, etc...)

WaveLAN/Orinoco Linux InformationDukeOfUrl made a small error on his review of the Lucent WaveLAN/Orinoco equipment. This equipment supports 802.11b at 11MB, with fallback to 802.11 (2MB operation), ad-hoc and accesspoint mode, and WEP encryption (for the Silver card). (The Lucent Gold card supports a proprietary 128-bit encryption scheme.)
The WaveLAN/Orinoco gear also is supported under Linux - the newer PCMCIA source has drivers for the card included, and Lucent has a binary-only driver that you can download from their website and compile into the PCMCIA source. Both drivers work well.
I've got an article posted on my website that details setup and operation of the WaveLAN/Orinoco gear. You can get it by going to NullDevice.Net.-- WildBill
-
Re:There's a lot more than 802.11b coming
First, peer-to-peer _is_ a LAN. Local area network, right?
But if you want it to talk to the rest of the network, look at a good article at NullDevice. Just add a wireless card to your existing Linux router.... -
I hope they start charging $1K/copy...Maybe people would be hip to the coolness that is Linux. Or perhaps BSD would hit it big. That'd be sweet (more BSD Daemon Babes, please!)
Seriously, that's pretty unlikely. As an IT Professional , the most common arguments I hear about open source products are:
Who's going to support it?
If it's free, it isn't worth anything.
What happens when it breaks?
Open Source Programs are buggy. Look at how often they're updated.
What if the author gives up the project?
As an Open Source advocate, I know these arguments are based largely on FUD. We don't need to rehash this here. But I'd like to bring up a answer to the $1000 M$ operating system that isn't opensource (and watch everyone go nuts:
What about Solaris? Runs on the Intel Platform, and can run just about everything Linux can. Yet Solaris is backed by Sun - who isn't going away any time soon (much to Bill Gates' chagrin) and is a large name that IT managers and investors can trust. Sun's Solaris license is pretty liberal - at Linuxworld, they were giving copies of it away and telling people to install it on every desktop in their company. M$ would blow a blood vessel just thinking about ordering their PR guys to say something like that.I think Windows has only a few years of life left in it. People are starting to get hip to the fact that there's high quality software out there for free, just waiting for a nice lil' Intel or AMD to call home. Once John Q. Public embraces this, Bill Gates could price Windows at $1.99 per copy and people would most likely select something else, as 99% of computer users know Windows is crap.
I didn't intend for this to be a MS bash post (but this is Slashdot, after all) - I just wanted to raise thoughts about other free OSs besides Linux and BSD. Yeah, Solaris has strings attached on the license. So what? You can get it for nothing, or next to nothing. It's high quality software, and the company will be supporting it for some time to come. Those are the selling point to John Q. Public and the IT management folks.

I should've answered your questions, too... duh.I've installed quite a few of the Lucent systems, and can answer most of your questions.
How does the coverage of the two compare? Are the wireless transmitters essentially the same? (Both seem to use Orinoco Silver cards, though the RG-1000's card isn't removable.)
The coverage of the two is comparable. The RG-1000 and Airport are basically the same, just the RG-1000 is repackaged, AFAIK. I've installed three RG-1000s, and they all exhibit similar range characteristics to the Airport, although I haven't opened up a RG-1000.I've seen the stories about extending coverage by hooking an external antenna to the Apple Airports. Can an external antenna be attached to the RG-1000? If so, with or without hacking?
The RG-1000 basically uses the same Silver card as the Airport. As I said above, the two units are pretty much the same. Silver cards have a little plug on the end of the stub antenna that is removable. This is where the range extender antenna plugs in. If Lucent didn't change the card for the RG-1000, then it's possible to hook a range extender to the RG-1000. Again, I haven't had a RG-1000 open, so I can't say for sure if it's worth it. The design of the RG-1000 appears to have an antenna built into it, but I *haven't* taken one apart, so I don't know for sure. The Orinoco FAQ says that about 30 clients can be supported by a single RG-1000. Apple's specs suggests 10 clients max. Has anyone used more then 10 clients with an Apple Airport and if so how well did it work?
I haven't used more than 10 clients with an Airport, but I've had 70 clients on a single WaveAccess Access Point at one time without adverse effect. I've also had 12 clients on my home machine (LAN party) and my home machine is merely a Linux box with a WaveLAN card jammed in it. Again, no adverse effects, and everyone was fragging wirelessly. Both products can do NAT. Can you configure filters or open up ports with the utilities provided with either?
There are no packet filtering capabilities on the Airport or the RG-1000. If you already have a Linux firewall or some other form of configurable firewall running NAT, you are better off disabling the NAT in the Airport/RG-1000 and running it in bridge mode.More info on WaveLAN/Linux is available at my homepage, NullDevice.Net
-
WaveLANFYI - I've got a review of the Lucent WaveLAN (Orinoco) system running under Linux at my homepage:
NullDevice.Net -
WaveLAN and wireless....I've seen a bunch of people mentioning wireless networks and WaveLAN for the geek house. Wireless networking is great (I'm running it myself) but having some Cat5 to hookup the desktop PCs really helps. What I did in my house:
1. Put a fat DSL pipe in with a static IP. I'm currently running at 1.1Mbps.
2. Crawled under the house and strung at least one Cat5 cable to each room. Time consuming, and a pain in the butt, but it's worth it to have a 100BT backbone between PCs.
3. Installed a Linux firewall/gateway between the DSL pipe and the LAN. Can't be too careful.
4. Threw a WaveLAN card inside the Linux gateway, and made it a combo firewall/gateway/wireless router. Works great with my laptop and Toshiba Libretto, and I can cover the whole house and property. Can even go across the street to the neighbor's house.
WaveLAN and other 802.11b technologies are great, but in my opinion, are better suited to portable technology. Wires are still the way to go if your machine is anchored to a desk.

It's being done...In many places - Silicon Valley among them. I work with South Valley Internet in the Morgan Hill/Gilroy area of Santa Clara County, and they're providing up to T1 access via wireless to businesses throughout the area. They've got a couple of access points on hilltops around here, which act as relay points from the NOC to the end users. I helped develop and test the system, which has been in operation since 1997.
SVI's system is older and not geared to end users like Prairie iNet's service is, although there is talk of experimenting with one. I think that in this age of free-installation DSL and Cable, that people won't go for a $600 installation fee... even if DSL/Cable isn't in the area yet. If the dollar amount could be brought down to the $200-$250 area, it'd probably become palatable for many households. The $40/mo - $65/mo charge is probably fine, as most people arent' going to go much above 256kbit anyway (unless you're running a server at your house).
However, with people hotrodding their Apple AirPorts and Lucent RG1000s, the 2.4Ghz band is going to rapidly become saturated and you'll have many rejected frames and dropped packets. That's one thing we've seen with the SVI system @ 900Mhz - all the cordless phones and other systems can wreak havoc with you, even if you are using a spread spectrum device.
Businesses like SVI and Prairie iNet should be applauded for having the guts to undertake such ventures, though. Building your own infrastructure outside of regular telcos is difficult, time consuming, and expensive.
If you're interested in putting a wireless LAN at home, I've got a review of Lucent's products on my site at NullDevice.Net.
