Over the top editorials
Numerous editorials in todays NY Post have advocated ignoring the law and using racist, mob logic to correct the injustice of yesterday's attack. These frothing calls to action are not only irresponsible, they are barbarous.
"Who is responsible for yesterday's carnage? That's no great mystery."
- editorial 4006
The law of the land is innocent until proven guilty. Until there is concrete evidence pointing to the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks, there can be no action. If the US attacks without evidence, then we are terrorists as well, and would deserve all the condemnation we are piling on our - still unknown - attackers.
"To hell with Bill Clinton's 'gather the evidence and proceed to court' approach."
- editorial 4022
"The response ... should be as simple as it is swift - kill the bastards. No, I don't mean hunt them, arrest them, extradite them and prosecute them in a court of law. I mean a far quicker and neater form of retribution for this cabal of cowards. A gunshot between the eyes, blow them to smithereens, poison them if you have to."
- Steve Dunleavy editorial 3999
Both of these editorialists call for dismissing the due process on which our justice system is based. They call for the removal of equal treatment under the law. These demands for extreme measures are demands for the creation of a dictatorship, of a police state. Assassinations, executions without trials, condemnation without evidence - these are the hallmarks of regimes like Stalin's Soviet Union, Mao Tse Tung's China and Hitler's Germany.
Consistent and reasoned responses are imperitive in civilized society. Everything else is barbarism.

Re:The lesbian stuff isn't so far offHaha! I located the link!
WILL SCULLY PAIR UP WITH A GIRL NEXT YEAR? (ny post staff)
I guess the obvious solution for Fox is to replace the now-finished storyline with some lesbians. They sure are desperate for ratings.

Re:Suitcase nukes
Furthermore, the concept of a "suitcase nuke" is absurd. Such a weapon would have a relatively insignificant explosive yield.
Bullshit. From the New York Post, November 8, 1999. (full text requires purchase).
Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), citing the congressional testimony of KGB defector Vasili Mitrokhin and Russian General Alexander Lebed, said the former Soviet Union produced 132 suitcase-sized, 10-kiloton nuclear weapons, but has accounted for only 48.
Little Boy, dropped on Hiroshima, was a 15-kiloton weapon. 10 kilotons is a significant fraction of that, and I think would quite easily satisfy some wacko terrorists' needs.
These weapons are known to exist and are known to be missing in large numbers. This is not just FUD. This is the world you live in.
You are making a false assumption that it is easier to bring a small scale nuclear weapon into the US through canada than it is to bring it by sea into a North Western state.
Yeah, Canada's not the way. Mexico is. How many thousands of mexicans make it into the US each year? Two trained and in-shape fanatics could get a suitcase bomb onto an unmarked shore in northern Baja, across the border, and into San Diego on foot in less than a week. No need to waste a cargo ship, even.

IPIX, Schmipix
This is a Unisys-style attempt to squeeze what ever they can out of a dry rock. They are cash strapped. despite finding some VC dumbass to invest in a barely useful technology. Anybody ever run strings on one of their binaries? That is the kind of direct actiont that could be taken to see if they have GPL code in their product. I live 15 miles from Oak Ridge and know a few people who work there. Lots of crickets chirping and surfing of head-hunter web sites.

NY Post IS reputable! The NY post is just as reputable as any of the other heavy circulation papers in the city. This "bad reputation" comes from its right leaning op-eds and often quoted gossip pages. I have yet to see an "Aliens kidnap hamster"-like story grace its layout.
I find it to be a solid NY-centric news source without the PC and liberal bullcrap that makes the NY Daily News (its main rival) not worthy to line a bird cage. Check it out and make your own judgement:

Re:This is in the New York Post, people!Actually, I haven't seen a story about aliens or hamsters in the 20 years I've read the paper. Gossip? Yeah. Sports. A pile of it.
Maybe it's the Right-leaning opinions you don't like.
Either way, the Post is a reputable news source. It takes a good paper to occasionally print unpopular things. Right is wrong, Left is right. I know. Bleeding heart liberals and all.
The Times it ain't.

Re:The world of toys dies a slow death...
It's too bad we live in a society where it just isn't safe to play with toy guns outside.
Or Candy Bars either...
-
Re:Too bad it's not the endI'm pretty much in agreement with you, with one caveat: I don't just want this over. I want this done right.
I forgot where I read this, but more recounting won't give a more accurate result, just a different one. Ballots may be lost, ballots may be damaged, ballots may be changed. Hand counting is subject to numerous inaccuracies.
We've discovered that our vote counting processes aren't exact, when it came down to a very close result. We need some improvements in the mechanics of vote-counting, but we also need significant improvements in election security. Right now, in most jurisdictions, it's very easy to vote multiple times. How many of you who voted were asked to produce an ID?
Gore supporters are complaining that many of their votes haven't been counted, but don't mention many of the military absentee ballots which were disqualified, nor the Seminole County absentees that Gore supporters are trying to disqualify, though no fraud is alleged.
We have a result that's within the margin of error. For the good of the country, it should be closed here.

Re:Let's not be one sided.
Well written.
I live in the greater Philadelphia area. While protesters and activists like Sellers have my sympathies (and the mistaken-as-protester bystanders even more so), the courts were really in a bind. Many of the protesters who were being held refused to even divluge their actual names. How can a defense attorney make an argument that a client isn't a flight risk when he won't even give his name? Others took their clothes off while incarcerated and refused to comply with officer's instructions to move (by going limp), and then railed loudly at seeing cops "dragging limp naked protesters from their cells."
Finally, I'd prefer not to hear arguments that all of the protesters were exercising their right to assemble, or even engaging in simple civil disobedience. Some of them were turning over parked cars and assaulting police officers. I hate that the police and judicial system here seemed so ready to throw people in lockup, but given the situation, I can't really blame them.

Reminds me of when I had to deal with the fact that the FBI was monitoring groups I am in constant contact with.

Napster Moves to RussiaWhat would happen if Napster moved to Russia or some other country that didn't care about the copyright violations? Is this not so much an option because Napster is looking to stay "legit"?
Another, related issue that I have been pondering since I posted this article on the longevity of MP3 to GeekPress is how much the music industry has contributed to the rise of Napster by not giving people other options. Currently, the music industry makes people pay exorbitant amounts for a block of music, even when the consumer only wants a single song. And if the CD sucks, too bad, you can't return it.
Napster isn't just about getting free music. It's about being able to acquire a single song at a time. It's about getting it in a format where it's easy to play 20 of your favorite songs. The music industry just hasn't been willing to provide these last two features. And the danger in that for the music industry, of course, is that people will continue to download songs from Napster and quickly get used to getting music for free.

i happened to find a new york post on the subway on the way to school and read an article about the simpsons movie which can be found here: http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/1251
.htm.
in any case, i'd love a simpsons movie. this is the last season, so it's a good time for it, etc, etc. i'm quite disappointed with how fox is giving futurama the timeslot shaft for malcolm in the middle.

Bush quote, really.Yes, according to this NY Post article , Texas Gov. George W. Bush is a close friend of Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Bob Herbold and said at a conference of high-tech executives in Arizona last month that his administration would "always take the side of innovation over litigation.".
I mean, as a presidential candidate you cannot get any more explicit than this, without actually committing obstruction of justice and interfering with ongoing litigation. -
"Liam and Lucas Rip Fan-dom Menace"
The New York Post reports that Lucas is as disatisfied with the hype as anyone, but the article talks mostly about out-of-hand fans.
I blame the marketers and licensees, but fortunately, I've been immune to the hype: I don't have a television, and my embargo on Episode I news, gossip and talk has been very successful. Katz's piece is not about the movie, really, which why I'm here. -
Tiger Electronics' death camps
I think the most important part of Furby Hack page is the link to the NY Post story about the Furby Sweatshop. It makes me pritty mad to hear that the Furby factories meet Hasbro's "code of ethics" while failing to be prepaired to reduce deaths if a factory fire should occur. Marc Rosenberg's statements about the treatment of the workers being competitive with the environment of Asia might lead some to believe that Tiger would have Furbys built in Natzi death camps if the Natzi goverment was still in power. Considering the monsters that Tiger Electronics has become to get Furby's made cheaply, I think this is one "toy" I can do without.
