Re:Does anyone else remember...

Free samples?
Like, you know, "trials".
Gee, wouldn't it be a good idea if Microsoft/other software companies offered some of these "trials" so that people would be able to try out their product before buying it.
If ONLY there were some way to try out software before you bought it.. then there would be no need to pirate it, right?
Too bad software companies haven't thought of that..
Oh, wait.. -
Re:Strangely it's Nivida with sucky drivers rightAs a Vista user the GF8800 is right now out of the question, less the driver situation have changed recently. It has. Just grab the beta drivers.

Does 8800GTS has HDTV support? From nvidia's HD urevideo:
Play HD DVD and Blu-ray movies on your PC with PureVideo HD technology.
Available on HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs, high-definition movies are bringing an exciting new video experience to PC users. NVIDIA® PureVideo(TM) HD technology lets you enjoy cinematic-quality HD DVD and Blu-ray movies with low CPU utilization and power consumption, allowing higher quality movie playback and picture clarity.
But wait, only these cards are supported: nvidia's list of cards
But hrmmm...it seems that the 8800GTS has regular purevideo, so I can watch Blu-Ray, but not in HD, if the Image Constraint Token Advanced Access Copy System copy protection scheme is enabled on the HDCP graphics card through the DVI out. nvidia's faq
IMHO, this is total bullshit. Did I get this right? Hopefully, there will be some sort of software hack, or small pci card that I can plug into my motherboard or usb port to actually watch hdtv and blu-ray, without buying a new video card...grrr.

Re:NVidia mobile GPUs and Linux
The 9xxx betas are out: I'm running 9742 on my Gentoo system right now. I don't know about the state of CoolBits though. Get the x86 Linux or the amd64 Linux 9742 drivers direct from nvidia, or get Gentoo and have the choice of being always up-to-date

Re:Yeah, but...
NVidia released new Beta drivers which support this card today.
See: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70b etadriver.html -
Re:Yeah, but...
Is now soon enough for you? =]
Sure, they're beta, if you want to be picky about it. Probably works just fine - their last beta drivers did. -
Re:Yeah, but...
Now
http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70b etadriver.html
Check at the bottom the 32 and 64 bit linux drivers are beta and you can use them right now. It looks like they also have bsd and solaris support today also. -

NVIDIA released the 1.0-9625

NVIDIA released the 1.0-9625 driver which fixes this bug last month: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70b etadriver.html
Its a bit ironic how these Rapid7 guys are foaming at the mouth about NVIDIA's awareness of the issue when Rapid7 wasn't even aware that its been fixed for weeks now. -
Fixed weeks ago
Apparently, the bug/exploit was fixed in the 9625 beta release. http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70

Reportedly Fixed on Kerneltrap
According to the first comment over on kerneltrap, this was fixed by NVidia last month in a beta release. However, the issue in question was not mentioned in the release notes.

Not the same contest, but we'll probably see some of the same participants or similar entries. -
CVS? You've got to be kidding!
The public CVS version of Cedega is horribly out of date and is missing a lot of pretty criticial stuff, not to mention quite difficult to compile and set up. It's just NOT worth messing with unless you really want to look at the code, rather than just get a 'demo' of Cedega. Rathar that fight to get the CVS code to compile and run, there's a 'timedemo' version of Cedega available at http://nzone.com/object/nzone_cedega_downloads.ht
m l. It's not Cedega 5.0, but it's a lot better than anything you'll pull out of CVS. -
DarkFall: Hands on Windmill
Just watched the DarkFall video and I really hope they fix the hand movement. It looks like the hands are stuck on some kind of windmill that they have to bob up and down sequentially right in front of the guy's face. Even when the character is on the bridge and moving *sideways* the hands still bob up and down... in the front... at the same rate. Regardless of the merits of the game itself, that one quirk turns me off of this game. For an example of realistic hand movement, check out the Project Offset demo video #2. Most of the time you don't see the hands -- only the weapon -- and when the guy moves sideways (after seeing the dragon, before seeing the ogre) the weapon appears to move realistically.

Re:Not a game engine
He was talking about developers. These days games seem to be all about graphics (sadly enough), but all the amazing graphics this technology has to deliver are of no use for game developers if they can't work with it. High profile engines like D3 and Unreal offer a full developement framework which makes development easier (and cheaper), covering pretty much everything a game developer could need. Including graphics.
As for the sneak preview video itself... wow. It is mindblowing, and the motion blur effect alone makes the graphics much better. Still, i'd like to know what kind of hardware rendered that in realtime. And yes, for all we know, this is nothing more than a tech demo. An amazing tech demo, yes, but i've seen a lot of amazing tech demos elsewhere... i'll reserve judgment until the game is out. -
When you consider
the Gigantahugeanormus selection of apps that get a benefit from SLI, it makes the price of a SLI system oh so much more reasonable.

You'd be better off w/ 6800 GT
Not to take points away from the article, but if you're looking to get a graphics card, take a peek at Nvidia's 6800 GT.
16 pipelines AND it can *easily* be overclocked from it's 350Mhz core / 1000 Mhz memory to the 425/1100 speeds of a 6800 Ultra (which is $150 more).
Compare benchmarks: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_doom3_benchmarks .html
ATI's X800 Pro has 12 pipelines.
I dunno, if you're gonna spend money on a graphics card, might as well go balls-out with this one. Best deal I've seen on a card in quite some time. -
Slick OpenGL 2.0 based Image Manager
One product that striked me as really slick was an image manager being demonstrated @ the nVidia booth called Taos Image Finder.
Apparently, it uses OpenGL shaders or GLSL, which is now part of the recently announced OpenGL 2.0, to do real time image filtering. It's pretty neat. The user interface is kinda space age and nothing like what you would expect to see in an image manager. It can search images based on color and shape and the results were very accurate. Definitely worth a look.
The stonybrook monitor was another stunning demo and it was hard to believe that such fantastic imagery could be displayed on a monitor. Apparently it costs somewhere around $90K :) , a tad expensive compared to my $150 19" :) -
AMD64 support

I own one :-P
I just woke up from sleeping off yesterday's GeForce LAN where nVidia released the 6800, and I happened to win a 6800 Ultra. During the LAN was a presentation for the press and the gamers present at the LAN, and all I can say is you should have been there. If for nothing else, just to see the demos of the Unreal 3 and other engines. One of the most impressive demos was Nalu (the mermaid). All her hair is rendered in real time by the 6800.
