Re:Where's my patched 2.9x?> I've always preferred 2.9x.
I've preferred 2.0x to the 2.9x versions. I are teh uber luddite
:)IIRC, somewhere between 2.09 and 2.91, WinAmp stopped including track lengths when you used "Generate HTML playlist", presumably because track length estimation was nontrivial on certain MP3s with borked VBR headers, etc.
Fun project for tonight - try this exploit on the really old stuff.
.MOD is certainly old enough that in_mod.dll might still be in the plugin directory of the old versions.Shameless plug for oldversion.com - makes it easy enough to test the 'sploit against any version you like.

Don't turn off sharing!
I've said it before and I'll say it again... Please don't disable sharing on Kazaa or other networks. It degrades the quality of the network and makes you a leech, and many people will simply refuse to let you download from them because you're not sharing anyway. If enough people refuse to share, the network becomes *useless* because nobody is there from which to download. It kills the point of peer to peer file sharing.
If you're looking to be protected from the RIAA, there are other ways to give you a layer of security. Kazaa Lite K++ (download at OldVersion.com, v2.4.3 is likely the one you want) includes an IP Blocker extension built on the PeerGuardian database of blocked (read: RIAA) IPs, so the RIAA under normal circumstances cannot scan you. Admittedly it's not perfect, but it's better than using the spyware-filled, vulnerable official version. -

OldVersion.com has RealPlayer 4, 5, G2, 7, 8...
I'm glad that I have a few archived versions of RealPlayer5 so that when I need Real for something, which is very very rarely, I don't have to use a shitty version.
If you lose your archived versions of RealPlayer5 (and don't want to use Real Alternative), OldVersion.com has a RealPlayer page. From their RealPlayer page:
Old Versions Available
RealAudio 1.0.0 (0.3 MB)
RealAudio 3 (0.8 MB)
RealPlayer 4 (1.2 MB)
RealPlayer 5 (1.4 MB)
RealPlayer G2 (3.1 MB)
RealPlayer 7 (3.6 MB)
RealPlayer 8 (4.9 MB)
RealOne Player 1.0 (8.7 MB)
RealOne Player 2.0 (8.3 MB)I loved OldVersion.com when WinAmp started sucking ass.

Re:I think
They want to double click an installer and have their OS Ogg enabled.
They have one:
Winamp 2.91 plays Ogg Vorbis, among others
If they're using Windows Media Player to play their music, they deserve to have the DRM chain yanked, hard.
People switching to WMA or AAC with iTunes instead of sticking with an older MP3 encoder as has been suggested here would be dumb as hell. WMA and AAC both have DRM installed, and enabled by default (iirc from my unhappy times trying to convert my WMA crap to Ogg goodness, but I don't know about AAC's default)
DivX is commercial software, and can thus afford to hire a webmaster who can be allowed to wake up stupid one day. Xiph's webmaster is probably one of their core coders.
DivX is also supported by winamp 2.91, without any plug-ins other than what comes with it. In addition, I'd definitely say that the AVI format was originated by someone other than DivX, given that according to Wikipedia, the AVI format is defined (thus was originated) by Microsoft. So DivX becomes an extension on a Microslut format that can be played by extensions to Microslut World Domination Take-over Software (aka WMP), thus making DivX itself only playable by third-party software. (Am I correct here in saying that having another party other than the DivX team and the end user-- in this case, WMP-- makes DivX third-party software?)
I'll give you that installing DirectShow filters is rather beyond certain users-- my mom included-- and that getting a standardized installer for the poor souls who have to use WMP would be a tremendous idea. But having users switch to WMA or AAC just makes for another inevitable format war; Ogg works on nearly every platform ever, with the possible exceptions of the Atari and the Amiga 500.* AAC works only on iTunes or very very compatible players; WMA works on Windows and WMP for Mac.
On another note, has Fraunhofer shown any interest (positive or negative) towards Linux and the OSS community? If they have, could this be an attempt to squeeze Linux out of the market for multimedia and thereby desktop systems? And is it possible (conspiracy theory) that Microslut could have funded them and/or be providing coders for this heinous act? (/conspiracy theory)
(*) For those who didn't catch it, this is a flat-out JOKE. -
Download Realplayer 8 from www.oldversion.com> (Can you tell? I'm extremely tempted to install realplayer, just to be able to listen to BBC worldservice broadcasts-- even though I know it'll slow my computer down, violate my privacy, and open my computer up to attacks...)
You can use an old version of RealPlayer downloaded from http://www.oldversion.com that does not mess around with your PC.
Realplayer 8 is the last version of RealPlayer released before RealPlayer One which is the first version to use devious tricks to hide the checked no-spam/adware/malware checkboxes. Although RealPlayer 8 also has some opt-out ad thingies, at least in RealPlayer 8, they are easy to find and disabling them is straightforward. The only annoying thing about my version of Reallayer 8 is that occasionally, it asks me to upgrade to RealPlayer One, but this is easy to ignore.
As you can see from the front-page of oldversion.com, RealPlayer 8 is one of the most popular downloads on that site.

Why get rid of something that work?
This list is of devices that work perfectly. They do what they need to without any obnoxious interference. My analog watch tells me the time when I look at it. I never see the latest sports scores or the temperature. I get what I want. The author seems to have left off the broom. Why didn't the broom die when the vacuum was invented? Because the broom served its purpose quickly and efficiently. The broom has been used for at least 5,000 years and will probably continue to be used until humanity is destroyed. Thank goodness for places like OldVersion.com . Newer isn't always better.

Get your old versions hereThe excellent old version archive site OldVersion.com has old versions of the K-lite client, plus many other 'out of print' apps. It is unclear if the 'legit' Kazaa will be able to block access even by existing K-lite installs, anyone more knowledgeable care to comment?
I could care less, I stopped downloading from it some time ago. Another
/.er recommended iRate, which is quite good. -

Re:Upgrading
I suppose, since old hardware is dirt-cheap, everyone is using old hardware? And since warez is free and available, no-one is buying software? I am not a prime source of software revenue: I'm a student, I make < $3000 per year, I've got my ssh, opera, icq, eudora, tetris max, and codewarrior. notice: all shareware xcept codewarrior. like m$ giving away its' OSes to inner city schools, old software would be distributed to people who were already not a ready market. Even most schools attempt to keep pace with the the upgrade push, and leave their old 'puters stacked in closets and thrown in basements.
Charity is not a bad thing, anyways. The companies themselves wouldn't even need to be a source of the software, if they would just allow another org to distribute or what. think http://oldversion.com, but authorized.
posting as an AC wastes everyone's time.
