Re:Wonderful idea.
It depends a LOT on both the round and what you're shooting it from. While many rimfire
.22s are subsonic, especially from pistols, some can be quite powerful with longer barrels - check out this test of .22 magnum penetration of aluminum diamond plate when shot through the new KelTec CMR-30 carbine: http://olegvolk.net/blog/2014/11/13/should-22mag-be-taken-seriously-as-a-defensive-caliber-new-on-alloutdoor/ -
Re:Smart guns...
"This works really well for cancelling out advantages of size/weight/strength such as otherwise might be of concern to... I dunno... say, a skinny 16-year-old kid who's got a very big grudge against a high school teachers' lounge full of adults"
It also works really well for cancelling out advantages of size/weight/strength such as might be of concern to a handicapped person defending themself against an able-bodied attacker, or a woman defending her children against a larger and stronger man, or an elderly person defending themself against a younger and more capable attacker, or a single able-bodied man defending himself against multiple attackers.
There, fixed that for you.

Re:Outside the USA
I live in Britain, where handguns are banned and to get a crippled rifle or shotgun you need to jump through a lot of hoops.
I can see this causing a lot of problems
Those frightened of 3D-printed guns in Britain should be much more worried about people making Sten sub-machine guns.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sten
You Brits were making them like gangbusters in WW2 precisely because they required almost nothing in the way of machining, special/expensive/high-quality/tight-tolerance parts or materials, skills to make, etc etc. Probably still plenty of old original manufacturing templates, jigs, etc scattered about that anyone interested could buy quite cheaply.
Same minimal requirements are needed to produce something like the International Ordnance MP2: http://olegvolk.net/gallery/d/37779-2/international_ordnance_MP2_0068.jpg
Just check this site out: http://thehomegunsmith.com/
Those are all much greater real-world, practical threats than some geeks 3D-printing a plastic gun that's as likely to kill/maim the shoot-er as the shoot-ee.

Re:Privacy shcmivacy
This site has some interesting viusal perspectives on the issue.
I really wonder what would have happened if we had a culture that wasn't so paranoid about guns and allowed more guns on campus. -
Re:intelligent life
Did you minor in bad science-ology? There are about ten links above you who show how the same shapes can be made in liquid water with a spinning plate...this suggests that the spinning of Saturn's core could very well be creating the same effect in the dense atmosphere.
But let's not waste any opportunity in jumping to conclusions, because, as everyone knows, there are no straight lines in nature.
Why is it all the UFO freaks have no grasp of science? Why does that follow?
