Re:Come on, you knew this was an MMO
From a comment in an interview for OnRPG with Matt "Positron" Miller and Melissa "War Witch" Bianco, lead developers on City of Heroes, going F2P increased their revenue, allowing them to put more work into development than they had originally planned, increasing the amount of content that they released to the players through the in-game store (article here):
Matt: Oh my goodness was F2P the right move for us! We were making a LOT more money per month than the normal subscriptions brought in. This allowed us to leverage even more for the Paragon Market. If we were not doing well we wouldn’t have been adding as many costumes and power sets to the market over the past year and planned out as many as we had.

Free MMORPG list
after playing SWG for a few months and getting tired of paying for it, I tried some free MMORPGs. There's a list of some here.

A Not-So-Modest ProposalI have been thinking about this particular topic for a while, especially since I started playing FFXI. $15 is my limit, due to budget restraints. I can not help but wonder if it would be possible to have an open-sourced, Free as in beer MMORPG. It would not be easy, but stranger things have come to pass.
A game where all content is created by all players that care to contribute. Like the old MUD's, but with graphics. You would need a massively-scaleable server, a client, world/level/item editors.
But who would run and organize this? Where would you host it? Where would you get the initial money required for hardware/storage?
I have no idea. However, due to the fact that I never think of anything first I decided to do FGI and found lists of free MMORPG's: http://www.onrpg.com/mmorpg-free-games3.html

Kind of hard to find anything on this game (at least in english). Here's a short review in english.
Looks like the following are official sites (Taiwanese and Korean respectively)
