Content-Addressable Web
It would be really cool if the Redhat Network supported the Content-Addressable Web so that we could automatically download our ISOs from the closests avaliable mirrors, and even download from multiple mirrors in parallel.
Stay tuned for the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference where we will be unveiling a companion set of technologies to the CAW that will change distribution of open source content forever!
If anyone wants to know more about CAW before the conference, please contact me at justin_at_onionnetworks_dot_com

Not true
Here's one rumor page...
www.oreillynet.com
I really don't want to choose between AOL and MSN in the future, so keep up the free source! -
Re:Content Control on Linux
> I guess you're new to the world of Linux
Actually, no. I'm not. Please read what I wrote and please take into consideration the smiley.
In any case, here's someone else who had the same thoughts/reaction as I had upon hearing the news: Andy Oram in an article on O'Reilly Net. Scroll to the second-to-last paragraph.
You and I and everyone here at
/. may know that Linux != RedHat, but to many people outside the community RedHat is a very strong brand name and may very well be the only Linux distro they know of. If AOL should impose some kind of content control mechanisms on the RedHat distribution this could have a serious impact on how Joe Sixpack views Linux as an OS. -
Re:Modified school bus
So far this sounds like the most constructive
suggestion. You might add a projection tube
and a pull-down screen for a presenter station
at the back of the bus, and put the seats in
backwards...
If you're in an area with relatively
good line
of sight to some central
landmark, you could possibly set up
some seriously fun packet radio or
point-to-point 802.11 network feeds.
There are some past articles like
this one that mention point to point
solutions, and places like
this and
this
that have antenna designs for 802.11
that go a pretty good distance... -
Here's some useful information...
The most important article:
Realtime data mirroring under Linux
And some other resources...

ObviousnessAll of those examples are cases where prior are should have invalidated the patent.
In the software/internet field, I think that the main problem is not that prior art is not found -- in a new field it may not exist -- but that the obviousness criterion is not tested.
IANAL, but AIUI, in order to be patentable, an invention must be both novel and non-obvious. But read this interview in which the Director of the US Patent Office demonstrated quite clearly that he did not understand the difference between these two concepts.
It appears that the US Patent Office believes that obviousness can be ascertained by determining whether there is any prior art. Of course obviousness is much harder to prove conclusively. But until they understand that an invention has to satisfy both of these criteria separately, we will continue to get more ridiculous software and e-businness patents.

I knew which side I was on
Not too long ago we had another story on these lines and I posted my opinion. When I reached the first argument raised by dalke against public code my repost was straight to fingers so here I am.
By restricting redistribution rights my company can receive additional revenue
Prove it! Especially from a public funded university venture! As always money can buy money (advertising buys income) but generating real revenue from software is extremely tricky (.bomb). If he specified an exact license and copy-protection scheme he may have had an argument, but only if his product has a unique quality that is quite globally beneficial within a field.I want to experiment with a modification to the DSSP algorithm
In case I need explain my argument here, he should have tried to get away with I want to experiment with a modification to the algorithm used for working with databases of the secondary structure of proteins (if thats what it is, he never said) and DSSP is the only database/tool used then he could have an argument, but ONLY if you accept that non-free Open Source is as good as Free software.Does it really help the public to have people spend another decade rewriting existing software solely so it can be released with an open source license?
Yep, it most certainly does! The result of the work would be a public built and understood system (however long it takes) which can be used by anyone, anywhere and they can offer their work back into it. Take his Secondary Proteins. Could the algorithm not be examined as an entity instead of as a piece of DSSP? Could you not objectify it out? Could that work be used by others to start building a free replacement? Could he just have written it for a hypothetical system and ported out the information he needed to fill the gaps from DSSP for any demo/testing (as the first Free compiler must have been compiled by a non-free compiler unless they were mad :-) If you build it, they will come! Is it better to "risk" the good enough license strategy and maybe find public funded work hijacked in some way OR to start from scratch and build the system (if the incumbant is so good it will take a long time to displace them, in the meantime development of both will probably spurt due to funding interests etc.). Isn't the point that companies (or even any entity that wants to prevent someone else from taking up their work) should not gain public money for their research and training to strengthen their position, isn't his argument simply "well the carts before the horse and theirs nothing we can do about it"?This is the nub of the argument, I say that public money should not be used to buy private money but used to fund the social purpose of learning, dalke says if it could make money it should be allowed. This is a truly american atitude (not to say it does not exist elsewhere, but it is an american creation) in that while most other societies would have seen the choice as public or private, now a choice for surrupticiously funding your economy by subsidising private ventures is quite acceptable, why? Allowing the university to sell itself is fine, but allowing it to fund what it sells with public money AND stop people from distributing it serves purely capitalistic purposes and not the greater good (and if you want to believe that capitalism is more important than greater good thats your bag not mine).
-
Good arguments but they don't support the conclusiGood arguments but they don't support Mr Andrew Dalke's conclusions. (Mr. Dalke took the anti position if you haven't read his paper.)
Granted, if the idea is that *all* software written which is funded by public money were to be open sourced, then Mr. Dalke has a point. But surely, it is a trivial exercise to modify the proposal to say, for example, that all software that is derived from proprietary software cannot fall under this order.
IMHO, if an idea is unworkable in its present form, see if you can modify the idea to fit reality before tossing the baby out with the bathwater. -
Re:I am a new Mac owner; my aunt & uncle alrea
Cool! If you like, let me know how your new iMac works out for you; I'll do the same. You can reach me at russellwgordon AT yahoo DOT com .
A few of my co-workers are sitting on the fence, but as of this moment I have no one to directly trade tech tips with (except users via various community websites). Lately I've been checking out the O'Reilly Network Mac DevCenter. It has a lot of lucid, informative articles on the Mac power-user side of things.
Cheers! :) -

4 /insecurities.html#sla:Slash, software that is used for many Web sites (including Slashdot), has a vulnerability that can be exploited to gain access to any account, including those of administrators. Versions of Slash that are vulnerable include 2.1.x, 2.2.0, 2.2.1, 2.2.2, and some versions available through CVS. Slash versions 2.0.x and earlier are not vulnerable.
It is recommended that affected users upgrade to Slash version 2.2.3 or the latest CVS version as soon as possible and disable admin.pl and users.pl until the upgrade has been made. Once Slash has been upgraded, users should check their users seclev field to insure that no unauthorized user has a value equal to or greater than 100, and should change their passwords.

Re:Good read Even O'Reilly has caught the AF
That's Apple Fever. A $1,299 UNIX work station? If Genetech bought 1,000, there must be something to them.
Read this
It is happening and O'Reilly knows it. He wouldn't embrace something if he didn't see the potential.
Just think how Apple has transformed the computing experience since 1998. Love them or hate them, the iMac and OSX are the best things that has happened to computers in a long time. they have forced other companies to play catch up. Got them off dead center.
the Linux community must also thank Apple for getting people to think outside the MS box. -
Re:Why?
I know that the Mozilla guys want it to be called an application virtual machine. I still don't think that Mozilla is appropriate for this, an ICQ client perhaps but not this. It'd be interesting to see how well OEone has done it. I can't see it being better than a purpose written desktop manager though. IMHO, this is between markets. It's too expensive to be an internet appliance and it's too limited to be desktop PC.

Do you know ANYTHING about the CLR?Microsoft has opened up C# and the CLR for standardization so that anyone can implement a version of it. This is something Sun has been quite hesistant to do with Java. In fact, Sun sued Microsoft for "polluting" Java.
Microsoft is porting
.NET to FreeBSD. How does that help them establish "Windows Everywhere"? They aren't suing or threatening Miguel for his Mono project: in fact, they seem to be encouraging it (or amused by it) judging by the interview with him on MSDN.C# is a nice, clean platform for Windows GUI development. And ASP.NET is cool enough to give IIS a feature edge (as opposed to a security edge) over Apache. Not that the Apache group couldn't create something like Tomcat to serve ASP.NET from Apache, mind you.
.NET is, after all, an open standard.Microsoft needs
.NET because Microsoft's customers want an easier way to develop. Period. Apple developers love coding for Apple. Linux developers love, well, anything anti-Microsoft. And Windows developers--God help them--should be able to enjoy Windows development. Having actually written an app or two using the CLR I assure you that it is much more enjoyable than MFC.IANAWT (I am not a Windows Troll). I am a BSD user looking forward to
.NET on BSD. I am a Perl coder looking forward to Perl.NET. And yes, I use and code on Windows at work. And for these reasons, it's very cool to have .NET. -
Re:What do you expect?
Yet another victory for Lynx users. When was the last time you heard of a terminal-based text-only browser bringing down a Unix system?
;)
Just this week, actually.
It's PINE not Lynx that's affected, but it is a terminal-based text-only app that has a problem opening urls. -
O'Reilly Network article on the same themeThis is a popular theme this month, with no surprises. O'Reilly Network also asked me to do an article on the history of USENET and things discovered in the archives. At the same time I also did an article on the history of some popular net terms like spam and net surfing.
