Re:The Texas Myth
Nice work. Here's an outfit that has been doing roughly the same thing, built into a game, using reasonable numbers for population and resources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Game
http://www.osearth.com/about.shtmlI played the World Game once at the Chautauqua Institute (Western NY State)--the luck of the draw put me on the Indian subcontinent, trying to make the numbers work. Our group failed pretty miserably, many people starved and not nearly enough got educated.

Whos good enough to take the toys away from...
...the waring brats that spoil it for the rest of us?
Seems to me Free Software has helped to take the toys away from the sandbox bullies.
And the military budgets are certainly more than enough to address real world problems and solve them where the result will be a natural reduction in reason to create war.
So who is good enough to do this?
Hmmm... didn't it take many to do Free Software, not just one? -
Re:Read your 1040 instructions
The vast majority of Government spending actually goes to defense programs and funding corporate wellfare not "Socialist" programs, whatever that means. Your stats are wrong and you are an idiot. Please see this for more realistic and accurate depictions of government spending. Or note the discretionary spending figures listed here. You might also want to read some information about military expenditures.
Socialist programs? Wtf is that? How is this insightful? Maybe SOCIAL programs, but socialist? That is absurd. I have pride in my country too, but it is very unfortunate that people like you live here. This ain't the red scare, buddy.

Useless metricsHmm... I'm having trouble visualising 0.57 microns square. Lets see - even with these reduced cell sizes, you'd need 3600 square meters (half the size of a football pitch) of SRAM to have one bit per person on the world.
Assuming a constant 50W/sqr.mm, that'd be 180GW of heat. Someone find me a heatsink for that baby!

There is a method to the madness... for sure!!!
We all know that the way to make documents secure does not including making them accessable via the internet or intranet or any net, regardless of encryption or key size.
For it only takes the breaking of one key document at the right time and misuse of the information found, for the NSA to then need to have someone to blame while the damages of the results would still exist.
Encryption, regardless of how big the key is, still has the possibility of someone hitting it, like the lottery.
Not to mention I read somewhere recently how an enycription string length, the longer it gets the more likely it is to be written down somewhere or placed under a less secure but easier to remember key or password.
the best insurance against getting burnt by fire, is to not play with it and even do the things that reduce the reasons anyone else would be.

At what point.......
At what point, to use the sound barrier as an analogy, does the war machine break the war barrier, in that going beyond it is pointless?
...Such that monies spent on the waring R&D can then be put into genuinely eliminating any desire to commit waring acts?
What the World really wants
-
The Burning Bush
terrorisim begets terrorism....
So instead of creating destructive problems, we'd really be better off by genuinely fixing world problems and inherently removing any motive for terrorism to be able to gain any supporters.
Terrorism - the self supported dependancy of power and war mongers, regardless of what you might call them or what connotation you apply.

Re:Getting a clear perspective of taxation..
Correction... not $780 billion but 396.1 Billion The $780 billion is from What the World Wants and how much it cost in comparison to 1995/96 total world military budget.... Meaning the US alone can probably fix the problems for less.... removing all reason for any terrorist group to get any support from anyone..... leaving the bin ladens all by themselves.

We have the technology and we have the funds to make good things happen.
So why is it not happening? You want to fight about it?
Assuming you don't want to fight about it, that fighting is not the goal or main desire of people, then there must be something else, something bigger that is the problem. You know, considering annual world military spending is $780 billion dollars (US) and to solve the major world humanitarian problems only needs 1/3 of that....
The problem has to be more than something under a trillion dollars.
A CIA Fact Sheet on Indonesia -- see the religion percentages (88% muslim).
OK, (given the above muslim population of indonesia): from the pbs trillion dollar bet article:
"In the summer of 1997, across Thailand, property prices plummeted. This sparked a panic that swept through Asia. As banks went bust from Japan to Indonesia, people took to the streets - events so improbable they had never been included in anyone's models."
and in Indonesia May 1998:
"Sources all over Asia tell Uscher that Asians know about local corruption but believe America is taking advantage of the situation to grab Asian markets and Asian wealth."
and (read the article!!!) another article from CNN:

World Bank wanted to help Indonesia out but charge interest (usery) entrapment???? Funny how China is the only country who did not participate in this stock game and are better off then the rest of us for not doing so.....
Where the US bailout was only (pbs article):
"We expect that they're going to explain to the members of this Committee why the Federal Reserve has organized the $3.5 billion bail-out for billionaires, why Americans should be worried about the gambling practices of the Wall Street elite"
And there is Something Else I have run across for that timeline as well (making the "trillion dollar bet" just icing on this cake?):

He signaled that politicization by blatantly breaking a time-honored apolitical precedent when he sat as a special guest in the president's box during Clinton s first State-of-the-Union address. He with Robert Rubin and Bill Clinton artificially increased the value of the dollar, relentlessly increased the M-3 money supply, recklessly created sloshing liquidity, and pied pipered consumers and corporations into bankrupting debt. He engineered those cancerous long-term policies to continually fuel the equity markets for baleful political ends and unearned glory.
The bubble burst in early 2000 causing losses of four-trillion dollars. After several sharp bear-market rallies, those equity losses launched a long-term economic decline -- the feared L-shaped recession or worse."

Do you really think maybe Y2K brought the systems all down? For what is supposed to be the top spy agency in the US? (they don't say what caused the three and a half day crash.)
Or do you perhaps see a simpler Truth to the matter, such as:

Re:Recursion factor...
I was actually thinking of this just yesterday, though not in such termimology as Joel uses.
I think it would cause some sort of cycle as in sine wave pattern, as is so commonly found in general physics of things, like economy. Where the reference value, say 0 is the mid point of the swing. + being a productive profit side and - being a loss side.
At such a point where full recursion of what Joel and the poster above seems to be refereing to, wouldn't there then be a human solution effort that would simply cause the reference level to lowered, effectively raising the sine wave whole, higher and higher. Or from another view, though fiction, as the economy is represented in the star trek series. Where the overall value of the living environment or earth gets raised to remove the possibility of poverty.
Hmmm, perhaps this might be a task for OS earth -
Freedom promotes Terrorism
Life causes death
what goes up must come down
Open source software enables cacking security
Locks are for honesty people
What we make, we can break
etc..
It's not about this thing or that thing being bad, it's about people and how they use things to be bad.
Maybe automobiles and trucks should be added to the list of terrorist tools that should be ban, along with anything that can be use to make a bomb.
In fact, why don't we just make up a list of all things that can be used to kill.....Guess that would include water....
But it's really about people, what they do, and most important WHY?
Like what is terrorist reason to do bad things?
Or Like why was a trillion dollar bet allowed to happen? Hmmmm, isn't Indonesia like 80% or better muslin?
And Why is military spending not being used to address and remove reasons to be a terrorist or do bad things? Certainly it cost us all alot more backing up wrongful world financial manipulations with guns, then it would in being more productive with such military labeled finances.
So yeah, on the list of things that can be used for terrorist act, we really do have to add the world militaries, as common sence will tell anyone that the majority of people living on this planet don't want war but only to live a happy and healthy life.
It's just the few creating wars and bad things, spending huges amount of money that can be far better spent. -

How much of the earth's population has access to TV?
There are 6.2 billion people on the planet now, by the way. -
Bug everyone for everyone to look in on.
With all the Cameras going up in the world to look in on the general population, why should the governments feel left out?
I mean, if having cameras on the general population helps to curb crime, then imagine the crime reduction we can all experience from making the government internals public broadcast.
and think what we could do with the savings! -
If only this could be applied to...
If only this sort of majority control could be applied to Military financial resources we might could actually achieve preventitive warfare (like in preventitive healthcare.)
Certainly it is a minority (in comparision to the 6 billion plus of world population) who control such resources in a non productive manner. -

When you can't fight them...
When you cannot fight the growing restrictions being created by lobby backed politicians/law makers, then it's time draw the line between what is higher on the acceptability list and what is not in regards to abuses of these laws.
Such a line that is better than what the ACLU and EFF are capable of drawing with there high or potentially profile case selection. Yes we ALL know that is ultimately and inherently the basis of their case selections.
First thing is to recognize the question of "who likes lawyers?" and the whys behind the yeahs and nays. As a matter of understanding the limitations and abuses of lawyers.
In other words, a line on a list that says there is plenty to do in the upper half of the list, that you should not need to spend much time on the lower part of the list. Focusing on items on the lower part could and would indicate abuses of the laws. Not saying the laws are right or wrong, just that being productive and supportive of individual freedoms is how the list is created. Where those things listed higher on the list are more likely to be retrictive or counter of (going against):
**
The Constitution of the Universe (Internet included)
Preamble
The purpose of human life is to live happily.
The function of government is to guarantee those conditions that allow individuals to fulfill their purpose. Those conditions can be guaranteed through a constitution that forbids the use of initiatory force, fraud, or coercion by any person or group against any individual:
--
Article 1
No person, group of persons or government may initiate force, threat of force, or fraud against any individual's self or property.
Article 2
Force may be morally and legally used only in self-defense against those who violate Article 1.
Article 3
No exceptions shall exist for Articles 1 and 2.
--
This Constitution rests on six axioms:
-Values exist only relative to life.
-Whatever benefits a living organism is a value to that organism. Whatever harms a living organism is a disvalue to that organism.
-The basic value against which all values are measured is the conscious individual.
-Morals relate only to conscious individuals.
-Immoral actions arise from individuals choosing to harm others through force, fraud, deception, coercion -- or from individuals choosing to usurp, attack, or destroy values earned by others.
-Moral actions arise from individuals choosing to benefit others by competitively producing values for them.
***
As an Example of such a list there is Web Police and their Latest Web Statistics
Untill the internaional law and legal system can prove itself competent in actually dealing effectively with such a list, so as to level off or reduce the crime rate, it really doesn't need to be making up new laws, especially ones that may infringe upon the above constitution. As such, the resources being spent in creating new laws can be better spent in dealing what the longer established crimes that exist and are growing in number.
Also there is something to be said for preventitive measures, such as along the lines of preventitive healthcare and what could be as well consider resources for preventitive warfare, but here on the internet, creating the incentive to not be anti-constitutional (as in the above constitution). To do this by some means of removing the "consumer" and "producer" separation headings and replacing them with "participants" in a manner consistant with the above constitution and respectful of values injected into the internet by individual, groups and world participants. -
What were they doing?
Perhaps there is a question to ask: What was it people were doing that they had that kind of time to play solitary?
Cumulative hours waited for internet to download this year
I was just using mapquest and it seems that IE wants to download everything, even what you have already downloaded once.
Geee, I suppose I do have time to play solitary. -

What the World Wants!
Well I guess that's proof (potential to validate) that doing the wrong thing is more costly.
. -
All together Now! Focus!!
What the World Wants
This is really important. That is the information regarding the amount of
the world military resources being three times that needed to solve all
the major problems in the world.
The logic is along the lines of preventitive health care.
Solve the problems, take care of the world, and you greatly reduce the
probability of conflict and of course prevent large bills of warfare.
The more people that digest this information, the sooner it will happen!
with heart! 3seas
P.S. Of the many ways computer technology fits in: this may be of interest.
. -
The truth is right here, and out there!
People, look around you and know that you cannot always prove
something, but lack of proof doesn't make it not exist or not
have happened. Buy applying a form of deception called neo-
cheating, you can easily deceive without threat of getting caught.
We have many examples of this in society today, Microsoft has
done alot of it but so have many others, including individuals.
Now in the probability of there existing higher intelligent life
than ourselves, don't you think they would be better at such
deception on one hand, while on the other having reason to not
want to make contact, a least until we get over trying to blow
ourselves up?
We really don't know enough about physics, gravity, anti-gravity
or all the things that might be derived in technology from such
knowledge, such as what we call faster than light travel.
The point is, communication is a two way street! And unless all
seti is, is an effort to pick up signals sent so long ago that
the sending party is long gone and/or to send such signals that
we well be long gone to ever know if they were received, then
clearly:
WE ARE NOT WORTHY! :)
A little proof of that can be found here where anyone can
see that a world that spend three times the cost of solving all
the major problems in the world, on military strength for defense
against "threats" instead, certainly is a world bent on destruction.
I mean damn, here we are spending so much resource in a futile
effort rather than spending those resource (seti, military, etc..)
in a way that might show us as being civilized enough for another
intelligent life form to want consider contacting us.
. -
We can break whatever we make!
The road to hell is filled with good intentions.
All to often has something been done with good intentions to only become used wrongly.
Whatever we make, we can break, and that includes FBI/CIA/NSA/etc.. spyware.
So the reality is not one of catching the bad but rather removing the incentive of being bad.
As an example, take a close look at:
What the World Wants
Imagine that! We have enough resources from world military spending to solve major world problems not once, not twice, but three times over.
Hmmm, guess that means I just busted them all. And I didn't even need spyware (MAD - spy vs. spy) to do it.
Well, quite a few posters above did say those who work for such organizations as the FBI/CIA/NSA/etc.. aren't very smart. Now everybody has proof.
.
