The simple fact is that Generation X have had it better than any past generation in history, except for the baby boomer generation - the generation of negative unemployment, antibiotics without antibiotic resistence, reasonable housing prices, free Unis (well in Oz anyway), welfare without scrutiny, lifelong employement with long service leave & gold watches, etc, etc.

So what if the baby boomers had it so good, Xers should get some perpective & realise they are still better off than all the other previous generations.

& what's this with complaining about the fact that Xers were able to rort billions out of the community with the Y2K scare campaign & the dot.bomb pyramid schemes? So what that the party's over, they still made billions at the time, doing sweet FA of consequence.

This first determination of the spin period was made from 6 nights ofobservations (by Col Bembrick) over a time span of 6 weeks, representing 58 rotations of the asteroid.The large amplitude of the light curve approx 0.4 magnitudes implies a considerable irregularity in theshape of this asteroid.

Personally I would think Minerva would be a better fit being a Roman goddess, but that's an asteroid too.

The problem is, as you can see if you follow the links above, most people are still under the mistaken assumption that you need land to grow food. That assumption is just so twentieth century.

It causes unemployment, economic hardship and financial uncertainty for the people, at the same time as record profits for multi-national corporations."

Definition #2 It overrides national sovereignty, party politics, and the democratic process, and can be used to undermine federal systems within nation states like Australia.

It is called "economic rationalism", and it is as phony as they come, a false theory concocted by equating two opposite concepts: oligopoly and free market.

After thirteen years of it, Australia is in chronic economic decline, and so is every other country, including Great Britain and the USA, which adopts it as economic policy. [ See Paul Ormerod, "The Death of Economics" (1994)].

I searched for a good email client to use under windows a while ago. My preferred choise should:

Not need to be installed (no tampering with the system).

Be able to import Eudora adress books.

Be as small as possible.

Have an easy-to-use adress book.

Be freeware if possible.

Be configurable (looks, fonts, etc.).

Be able to handle multiple accounts.

Be able to read/remove HTML.

Pegasus and Eudora was both too large, so the list was narrowed down to:

Kaufman Mail Warrior.

Opera browser mail.

Poco mail

The bat!

After trying these clients out separately for a while, I came to the conclusion that Poco mail fitted my list best. Not that it was outstanding in any way, the bat! and Kaufman was almost as good. I didn't like the interface of the bat though, and Kaufman, though very nice, had some problems with replying to HTML mails. The only things with poco that didn't fit my wish list is that it is not free and that it needed installation. Otherwise great program. I will be keeping an eye on Kaufman MW though. If some small details are improved, the client will rock.

If you know another WIN32 mail client that fits my wish list pretty close, please tell me. (Never satisfied :)

This was my final year project thesis. Just remember the golden rule unstructured 2 structured == convert 2 XML I wrote a [very bad] program in C++/Perl/tcsh IPC=pipes to add XML tags to English, and then index them into a search engine which would use the lingual data stored in the XML tags to help the search.

NIST does a MASSIVE competition on this annually. I don't want to be an XML-buzzword whore <Arnold Schwarzenegger accent> (XML commando eats Green berets, C++, Java, Perl, COBOL for breakfast)</Arnold Schwarzenegger accent> but you can't beat XML for easily converting anything that you can make sense out of into computer readable format. Real h3cKoRs use SGML, but us underlings have to stick with things we can understand like XML. As for expandability, if we want to encode something else into the document, then just tag-it-and-go

It took me 200 hours to fish out all these links (before the Google days), I don't want anyone to have to waste as much time as I did feeding the search engines exotic foods. It's a year old so pardon me for the odd broken link, armed with these you could probably turn jello into XML ;-)

I just have to ask, "Why?" Although Linux on a PDA is cool from a gee-whiz standpoint, I think that it's probably overkill from a day-to-day use standpoint (but then, so is Windows!). I want my PDA to be like a digital toaster: simple to use, predictable and dependable. All extra complexity just gets in the way of speed and on-the-run operability. I don't think running telnet (or ssh) on a tiny little handheld with no keyboard is going to be very fun. I would think that the older, larger HP devices that had a full keyboard would be better suited.

Her doctoral dissertation concerns the current pandemic of Repetitive Strain Injury, RSI, also known as Cumulative Trauma Disorder CTD. This is an epidemic of somatization (hysteria affecting the soma, the body). Somatization is also known as 'functional overlay' or 'functional disorder' by the legal profession.
Her thesis, Ideology and Aetiology: RSI: an epidemic of craft palsy, examines the origins , the medical philosophies that allowed it to thrive and the issues surrounding those who were afflicted.
She is frequently called to consult in RSI cases both in Australia and in the United Kingdom.
Dr Lucire is interested in developing a consultancy practice to the Legal Profession in the United States and Canada as well as her Australian and British work. She would be happy to travel overseas and to review the large numbers of claimants involved in class actions, to conduct appropriate interviews and to provide litigation standard reports.

She's no different than the "doctors" hired by tobacco companies to testify that there is no evidence to suggest a connection between smoking and lung cancer.

There's the Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) based in Iowa, America and founded in 1975. They are particularly interested in "heirloom" seeds. You can become a member of Seed Savers and that gets you a bunch of publications every year.

This group alos has an organised arm called the Flower and Herb Exchange (FHE), which you can also purchase a membership for.

SSE has a Heritage Farm, a living historical museum of plan varieties. SSE also has a commercial store in Wisonsin, America.

Then there's Seed Savers Network (SSN) based in Byron Bay, Australia and founded in 1986. Their goal is to "preserve the diversity of our cultural plants". They have subscriptions of various kinds and have newsletters, seed exchange, a seed bank, workshops and they publish a handbook.

The SSN is setting up networks in the Solomon Islands, Tonga, The Caribbean and Cambodia. They also assisted the Southern African Seed Network (SASN) in setting up in Zimbabwe.

Then there's the Irish Seed Savers Association (ISSA), whose website is under construction. They are "dedicated to the location and preservation of traditional varieties of fruit, grain and vegetables".

The Seed Savers Aotearoa New Zealand (SSANZ), based in New Zealand and probably founded in the year 2000. Their goal is to "facilitate the sharing of information and resources between regional seed saving groups"

Seeds of Change (SOC) founded around 1989 in Sante Fe, New Mexico. SOC "is committed to improving the lives of this and future generations by preserving biodiversity and promoting the use of sustainable organic agricultural practices". They have a commercial store hosted at Yahoo, and a research arm close to Santa Fe. Their website has a lot of different sections and seems to be aimed at the average consumer.

Comox Valley Growers & Seed Savers (CVGSS), based in British Columbia, Canada. Their mission is "Conserve and preserve our plant heritage and diversity by encouraging participation in growing heritage and non-hybrid food crops and other plants". They have mail-order membership.

The Native Seed Savers Network (NSSN) is a Greening Australia project, based in New South Wales, Australia. Started in 1996, "the need for more detail on the appropriate use and management of dwindling areas of locally-native seed resources in the Sydney Basin prompted the development of this community-based native seed trading network"

Primal Seeds aims to:
- Inform and inspire people to take the protection of biodiversity and the creation of food security into their own hands.
- Support grassroots movements around the world who challenge agribusiness and promote food production based on diversity and community.
- Act as an information network.
- Promote seed saving, seed swaping, heritage, open-pollinated, rare, local and illegal seeds.

Sorry to take so long to reply! I've been in training, barf, and don't have quick and dirty generator with me. this page http://www.ozemail.com.au/~milleraj/misc/luxury.f9 0 looks like it has a better tested bunch of routines, which could return 64 bits with little modification. Note that the serries WILL REPEAT for a given seed. Also note that there are many free random number generators available on Linux and BSD platforms and that allmost any FORTRAN compiler will have a random number generator call that you can check out.

I'm not trying to claim that civilisation as we know it will end without an IT industry, but if it weren't kinda important there wouldn't be a National Office for the Information Economy, would there?

My point was simply that regulation costs industry money. I know first hand that Ozemail have refused to run certain content for fear of litigation under the federal laws introduced last year. This is clearly making the industry uncompetitive on an international level and - although many US content providers haven't realised it - The Internet is an international media.

BTW, either you have a wild imagination or you fly a very nosey airline. I had to fill in some paperwork when I passed through customs in Singapore (October last year), but Singapore Airlines weren't about to throw me out of the plane before we landed :)

This source requires DirectX. There are a couple of works in progress, like John Fortin's port of DirectX 6.1 and Peter Hawkin's port of DirectX 5. They're both designed for compilation under gcc/egcs on Windows, so they might be useful for alternate platforms or not.

A Letter to the Open Source Community

The Probotics team is proud to announce that we are releasing all of our source code to Map-N-Zap under the Gnu Public License. This includes all of our GUI, Iconic programming language, and Robot communtion protocol code. This decision was made in part because of the numerous requests from the linux community for our source code, and the realization that they, and developers for other platforms, have much to offer to our mission, which is to make really cool robotic technology. We would love for you to take our source code and do wonderful things with it. Obviously, since we are releasing under the GPL, any contributions you make will remain under the GPL as will this release, even if we choose to later re-release this code under a proprietary license.

The source code which is released is that of version Map-N-Zap 2.1, with some changes. These changes are briefly described in the included readme. They are mainly work arounds to some proprietary source code which we did not hold the copyright to, and some (very preliminary) additional development.

This is a preliminary release of the source code. We are currently re-designing Map-N-Zap, to improve both the functionality and portability of the code. This code will also be much better documented than our current code. We expect to have this done in around 6 months or so. Until then, we wanted developers to have the opportunity to examine and work with our code.

The only caveat is that our software development team is essentially one person who wrote more than 95% of map-n-zap, and a few others who have contributed to it. As such, we cannot offer any support to developers. We just don't have the resources. What we are doing is creating a mailing list which will be used for announcements of any new developments or generally important things. Also, a Developer's Forum b-board will soon exist, which will be for you to talk to each other about any issues that arise, although we will monitor it and participate in it as time permits.

The source code is only known to compile under Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, and makes use of MFC and DirectX. Therefore, it will not directly compile on non MS platforms. However, the dependance on DirectX is not great. A Readme file is included which gives compiliation instructions. Other than that, the code is commented, but there is no global source documentation.

Finally, before downloading the source code, we ask that you fill out the form below and give us some basic information about yourself. Our privacy policy is that we will NOT release any of your information in any way, either by selling it, giving it, or making it available in any form. Nor will we use it internally for any sort of marketing, spam, etc. The only disclaimer to that is that if you check the "Include me on your mailing list" box, you will be added to our developer's mailing list, and receive information from us. We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

Describes the buffer overflow AOL is using in some pretty good detail. Here's the basic idea:

When AIM connects to the AOL server, the AOL server sends back a message containing x86 executable code. This overflows a buffer in the AIM client, and the code gets run. This code creates a packet to send back to the AOL server. If the AOL server doesn't see the packet, then it assumes you're not using AIM, and boots you.

What MS's client did was see the packet containing the code, and generate the reply message WITHOUT overflowing a buffer or executing that code. But, AOL can just tweak that code on the server a bit and have a different reply get generated, while MS's client has to get updated to use that new code.

Nevertheless, this is pretty damn reprehensible on the part of AOL. If they don't want MS customers using their servers, sue the shit outta M$, don't exploit holes in your own code to do it. You fix bugs, not exploit them.
