Re:"Keep reading to see what Bennett has to say"
Use this greasemonkey script to hide Bennett's shit from the main (and "older") pages. http://pastebin.com/RWCxT0jJ (I disable it once in a while to check for his shit so I can tell people about the script.)
Give Haselton a break. He has done us all not just one but many public services.
Having said that... let's be honest: sometimes Haselton expounds on things that are very clearly not in his area of expertise, and certain Slashdot editors (for that is exactly what they are) probably give him too much "air time" on Slashdot. Especially, it seems, when he is expounding on something that is not in his area of expertise.
But while this one is rather long-winded, it IS an issue everyone here should pay attention to, regardless of whether we happen to agree with Haselton and his analysis.
If Haselton bores you, blame the editor(s) for putting him up too often, in regard to things he is hardly an acknowleged authority. -

Re:Grammar ?
Except when it doesn't just work and you have to debug, because then what you describe as "dynamic" starts to feel like "unpredictable" and it takes far longer to work through than it should. I've only looked at a very small example, but I cannot imagine myself ever trying to teach how to program in this language. How do you teach someone to think like something with very little internal logic or consistency?
The fact that its grammar cannot be expressed as EBNF (like Ada) does not mean that it's not precise and consistent. You look at some input and at the xl.syntax file, and you know exactly what parse tree you are getting out of that input. You look at the various rewrite rules (the things given by the rewrite operator -> and you know exactly what's going to be executed and why.
Overall, the grammar is much more consistent than most other languages, if only because it's so small. As I indicated elsewhere in this discussion, scanner and parser together represent some 1500 lines of C++ code, and a syntax file that is currently 62 lines long. A complete and precise description of the core language in plain english takes about 50 pages. Compare that to the 700 pages for the C++ standard, and tell me which one is easier to teach?
If you want to look at your input in a Lisp-ish syntax, you can, there's an option in the compiler to dump the parse tree in such a format. If you build the command-line compiler for XLR, it will be xlr -parse file.xl -style debug -show. You can also try -style dbghtml to see it create HTML coloured boxes corresponding to the program structure. For example, if you have the default syntax file, input http://pastebin.com/TTbCKshW turns into http://pastebin.com/wxZX2Fc0. It's absolutely deterministic.
The additional grammar rules I mentioned earlier, e.g. the distinction between statement and expression, are there to match the way we humans read code. That's what concept programming is about.

Re:Thank god
This greasemonkey script will hide any bennet haselton shit from the main page and the "older" pages (http://slashdot.org/?page=1).
http://pastebin.com/Dr4VkXFUIt just shits through the DOM looking first for the article list wrapper (firehose) then shits through its immediate children looking for article tags, shits through the articles looking for the nested divs that contain the content, then matches content (both the flat node and innerhtml, just in case) for "bennet" or "haselton" (as whole words). If found, it hides the article.
Remember to redirect beta to the real site.

Re:The Titanic is UNSINKABLE.Devil's advocate of the parent.
I will agree with your statement on its face. However, the reasons are simple. The PS4, Xbox One, and others don't have enough interesting content to require the amount of time involved to completely break them open.
As for the blu-ray, yes it has been fully cracked. HDCP master key was leaked in september of 2010 http://forums.afterdawn.com/th... if you want a more detailed explanation. Those multiple players were broke to the point Sony stopped selling them. http://hardware.slashdot.org/s... (that master key computer chip. It exists.) There is a commercial product that allows ripping of Blu-ray dvds now called AnyDVD.
This doesn't mean people haven't attempted opening them up. http://pastebin.com/QDeRQiMY is the location of the attempt 5 days after the launch of the PS4. Idiot tweeted it and Sony nailed him to the wall. So the files are buried in the Darknet (where cp silk road and the true bottom of the barrel exists) now.
http://www.breathecast.com/art... This is the current news on the XBoxOne hack attempts. While it was a red herring it means there are people actively trying.My point is that a) there is no technology that can be used to block the willfull copying of something, if someone truly wants to. Bono is completely clueless. He is to piracy what Jennie McCarthy is to doctors trying to immunize children.
As for apple with out Jobs, it will suffer the EXACT same thing that has happened to all other formats that people discover aren't easily manipulable. No one will buy enough to warrant it remaining. It will fail. Just like 3d TV failed. Just like HD DVD failed. Until Hollywood accepts that their will acceptable losses on all products sold and stuff is allowed to return to the public domain this will continue. -

to quote :-
I'm leaving MojangI don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.
A relatively long time ago, I decided to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to take over leading it, and I wanted to try to do new things. At first, I failed by trying to make something big again, but since I decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I’ve had so much fun with work. I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed.
I was at home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. I was confused. I didn’t understand. I tweeted this in frustration. Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I didn’t have the connection to my fans I thought I had. I’ve become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a CEO. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.
As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.
Considering the public image of me already is a bit skewed, I don’t expect to get away from negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won’t feel a responsibility to read them.
I’m aware this goes against a lot of what I’ve said in public. I have no good response to that. I’m also aware a lot of you were using me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I’m not. I’m a person, and I’m right there struggling with you.
I love you. All of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I can’t be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.
It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity.

Re:"Death to Gamers and Long Live Videogames"
In this thread, the "accusation" is that the accusations against Zoe have truth to them. The accusation takes the form of a comment, not an article in its own right. Your "[citation needed]" post is out of place.
If you're curious about it, look it up. If you dispute it, dispute it. This is a website where people comment about the article, and often about things completely unrelated to the article. Some work on your part is required, the comment thread isn't a place for you to whine about not being spoon-fed. For your [citation needed] comment to be taken at all seriously, you have to at least add that you searched for it and couldn't find it, so you don't believe it's true without more work on OP's part, thus [citation needed].
As it turns out I was curious about the accusation as well so I searched for some more information. Took me about 10 seconds to find some interesting things:

Re:Alleged leaker already named
Wow. If it turns out to be true, it's yet another testament to how difficult it is to be truly anonymous online these days. But not because of standard technical things like using proxies, etc, it's simply because there's so much info out there in social media and Google to provide clues. One mistake or oversight and you're pretty much exposed.
tl;dr: Excluding the reddit users who put the pieces together, it wasn't social media that got Bryan Hamade. It was Bryan Hamade who screwed himself by failing to redact his network information from his attempts to sell data that didn't belong to him.
While what you say is true, that there is so much interconnection between social media services that isolating one's identity while using them is virtually impossible, Bryan Hamade screwed himself on this one.
Paragraph 47 of the pastebin "/u/bluntmastermind = bryan hamade"" points to a screenshot of the alleged perpetrator's desktop. That screenshot reveals the perpetrator failed to redact the names of the network group and servers to which the user was connected.
Some productive user Googled the names and eventually turned up the "About Us" page for Souther Digital Media (screenshot) and initially fingered the 15-year-old, but deeper searching points to Bryan Hamade (aka bluntmastermind, notice the custom URL, http://steamcommunity.com/id/bryanhamade/).

Re:There are only two types of security...
A quick note to your argument about how with regular encryption you know when you have found the right key because regularities will appear: You can easily circumvent this*, by encrypting the data multiple times with different keys and possibly with different algorithms.
That's how you know the security is solid.
Or that there is nothing there that can be broken...
Imagine for example if I write in chinese and you had no reference for chinese. You do not know how to read it and you don't know of any similar languages to aid in your decoding of the chinese.
First something general about using human languages for the purpose of security.
1) If you invent a language, your vocabulary and grammar will basically be the key. Admittedly, it will probably be a pretty big key, but partial knowledge of the key will likely allow partial deciphering of the messages in that language.
2) Inventing languages for the purpose of security is not a well studied field. If you do it ad-hoc, you are unlikely to get a great result.
3) In general, when using human languages, similar messages will look similar. As information rarely exists in a vacuum (the Voynich manuscript pretty much does, yes), this may allow an attacker to make inferences about your messages.To use your example of Chinese, consider the following scenario. You are using Chinese to communicate with a friend. In this world, Chinese is a language known only to you and your friend. I am a well funded adversary and capable of observing your general daily behaviour in a way that only requires communication meta-data and a guy who watches your house and one who watches the house of your friend.
On day 1:
You send your friend a message: æ'äçç¦ä½æ"ääç"èã
I observe:
- You clean the windows.
- You go buy things from the grocery store.
- You give your friend a phone call.
- You take a walk.
- Your friend goes buy things from the supermarket.
- Your friend receives a phone call from you.On day 2:
You send your friend a message: æ'äfçäåååZçoeæ'æoeåäã
I observe:
- You take a walk.
- You chat with a neighbour.
- You call your mother on the phone.
- You go visit somebody.
- Your friend receives a phone call from somebody.
- Your friend goes eat at a restaurant.On day 3:
You send your friend a message: æ'æoeåç¦ä½æ"ääç"èã
I observe:
- You buy things from the grocery store.
- You take a bath.
- You take an evening walk.
- Your friend receives a phone call from the person you visited the day before.
- Your friend goes swimming.(Please go here for a copy where
/. hasn't messed up the Chinese characters.)By now, I will be able to make some guesses about the meaning of various parts of the Chinese language. If you communicate more, I will be able to refine those guesses. I suggest you mull over it a bit and see if you can come up with a few hypothesis yourself. And yes, it's proper Chinese.
You're ignoring my point which is that the cryptography is theoretically breakable. Where as the things I'm talking about are not.
I am not ignoring that. I merely hold the opinion that the difference in practical security is negligible. To reiterate the pros and cons of using OTPs instead of regular, modern cryptography:
+ Properly used, OTPs can be perfectly secure.
o This means, if you compare the security of an OTP with that of a conservatively designed cipher using 128bit keys, you have reduced the probability that your cryptography will be broken by a bit less than 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000001%.
o Using an OTP does not defend against attacks that circumvent the crypto -

Look from the K.I.S.S. side
From a bit different perspective (largely unix-practical) -- when not having enough resources, you are forced to keep stuff simple. That's usually good, isn't it?
Anyway, I always wondered why is OpenSSL such a bloated pile of code. It does one god damn gazillion things tightly packed. Now, TLS implementation itself is pretty simple, Key management tools are pretty simple, PKCS verification tools are pretty simple, mathematics behind that is pretty simple, commandline tools for quickusing the maths are simple, relationship between those entities ("APIs") are well-defined and usually clear. - 256GB SSD, Cache option disappears when you select ssd and/or 3g card
- touchpad with NFC and fingerprint reader (touchpad is a bit funky on the new lenovo's, it responds well and all after a few synaptic-configs in X, but it took me a couple of weeks to get used to not having ordinary buttons. And i haven't tried out NFC or fingerprint-reader, but they're a cheap addon)

Re:Tmux
Here it is in nicm@'s words:
"In particular, being able to share a single window between multiple terminals, with other windows in the same session but entirely separate. Adding this to screen was implausible"Perhaps I am still misunderstanding the features of tmux (most likely in fact), but to say that is implausible to add to screen is misleading to say the least, since I have been doing exactly that in screen for nearly a decade.
On one terminal, either start a new screen session or -r to a detached session.
If starting a new one, try: screen -S LetsShareOn a second terminal, run: screen -list
You should see a list of screen sessions and their status (attached, detached, multi, etc)
If you used -S on start that will be the name, otherwise it's some tty.host.number string.Now on that second terminal run: screen -x
Try to adjust both terminal sessions so you can see them at the same time. Type in either, watch in either. They are shared seemingly matching your tmux description.
You can change permissions per terminal so others can't type but will see everything you do (aka tutorial mode) using ^a *
Also for split/multiple windows showing on the same terminal, use ^a S (control-a capital-S)
To switch between split windows use ^a tab
Close a section of split window with ^a QThe status bar problem is true and pretty annoying. I fixed it myself with a line in ~/.screenrc but of course I have to pretty much install that user config file on every new system I use which can get annoying.
If you want an always-on status bar showing window numbers and titles (^a A to change the title), add this to .screenrc (and hope slashdot doesn't munge it!)hardstatus alwayslastline "%{= wk}%-Lw%{= BW}%n%f* %t%{-}%+Lw %-=%{= BW}%H%{-}%{-}"
Note the two "BW" bits? That's background blue and foreground white, and applies to the window with focus. Change B to R for red for example (production vs not-production in my case)
Here is my whole
.screenrc file for copy/paste purposes: http://pastebin.com/kMkuFXi9
No splash screen, always on status bar, 10k line scrollback history for copy/paste (^a [ and ^a ] ), and auto-open three windows with preset titles and commands running in them.I don't mean to knock tmux in any way at all, having not used it (and I do plan to check it out now) - but hopefully these screen tips help out others here.

Test your servers ...
Here is how you can test your servers to see if they are vulnerable.
Download this Python SSL Heartbleed test script.
Download it, rename it to ssltest.py, then run it as:

fix for Gentoo Linux
put this patch in
/etc/portage/patches/x11-base/xorg-server/
stickykeysfix.patch
It simply reverts the problem causing commit and now sticky keys are released after a mouseclick on my system. I don't know if this introduces other bugs though. -

I've not used U-Boot nor fiddled with any kernels. I can do things symmetrically using a bytecode engine, though ^_^...

Re:Why should I drop glibc?
Virtually all binary software is distributed in enormous tarballs containing their own libc, and every other library they use, and a bunch they don't simply because static linking doesn't work against glibc properly (and violates the license for non-free software).
Please don't spread false information this way.
Take Firefox for example, from Firefox.org, not the version shipped with your distro. Every Firefox tarball includes their own build of GTK, GDK, glibc, libnspr, etc.
Yes, let's take the version from firefox.org that I'm using right now.
$ ldd /opt/firefox/firefox-bin
linux-gate.so.1 (0xb77bb000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0xb776b000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2 (0xb7765000)
librt.so.1 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/librt.so.1 (0xb775c000)
libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0xb7675000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libm.so.6 (0xb762f000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7614000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0xb746a000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb77bc000)
See? It's using my libc, so what you said is completely incorrect. Shall we see if it uses its own GTK library as you've said? I'll past the ldd result here: http://pastebin.com/UsP0MHUe , so you can see for yourself that firefox uses the system libraries instead.Because dynamic linking is so horribly broken on Linux that is the only way it could possibly work on more than one distro.
Dynamic linking on Linux is state-of-the-art. If it doesn't work for you, look for responsibilities somewhere else than the operating system. If anything, it's static linking which is badly supported (by glibc, not by Linux).
SORRY.

Re:Root CA is Only for Your School's Apps
Here you go. I've posted the public CA key as well as the private key so attackers can decrypt your traffic with sslsniff. Slashdot won't let me post long strings of characters, so I put it on pastebin. Please install it at your convienence on all your different devices, since it's no big deal to install a poorly protected root CA on your computer.
Just for fun (and because openssl wouldn't let me NOT do it), I put a really secure password on the private key. It'd take decades to crack this password. I mean, nobody could ever guess the passsword. It's a really secure password, just like I'm sure the schools private key and password is.
Oh, and remember kids. SSLSniff by Moxie Marlinspike.

Re:Lurker Here
I'm sick of seeing posts about the beta.
Well, then, it's your lucky day! Starting in 4 hours and change, a lot of us from the USA will be leaving
/. and making no more anti-beta posts for a week! (The Europeans and UTC hardliners everywhere have already left.) Enjoy your week...--------------------

On February 5, 2014, Slashdot announced through a javascript popup that they are starting to "move in to" the new Slashdot Beta design. Slashdot Beta is a trend-following attempt to give Slashdot a fresh look, an approach that has led to less space for text and an abandonment of the traditional Slashdot look. Much worse than that, Slashdot Beta fundamentally breaks the classic Slashdot discussion and moderation system.
If you haven't seen Slashdot Beta already, open this in a new tab. After seeing that, click here to return to classic Slashdot.
We should boycott stories and only discuss the abomination that is Slashdot Beta until Dice abandons the project.
We should boycott slashdot entirely during the week of Feb 10 to Feb 17 as part of the wider slashcottModerators - only spend mod points on comments that discuss Beta
Commentors - only discuss Beta
