Re:My DVR is MythTV
I just ordered a Hauppauge PVR-150MCE card from PC Alchemy last week (arrived yesterday - great service!). These seem to be the best option, as they do MPEG2 encoding in hardware and apparently have good support in MythTV. I ordered an OEM card (no FM tuner) for 50 bucks, but it doesn't look like they have that anymore. As another poster mentioned, you may want to step up to the PVR-500, which is basically a dual-tuner version of the 150.

Re:Only one problem
They don't sell a retail version by itself, but you can get an OEM edition, and you can buy it bundled with some tuner cards. The problem is to be made into a mode of pure watching, a state of the same. In fact, if the environment is technologically-driven, so you crumple up the URL from the last tab you were already expecting.

Obligatory ATI warning
We've been down this PVR road many times here on
/., and I don't know that this article's really adding anything that hasn't been said multiple times in other articles, but it's worth repeating that if you're going to build a Linux-based PVR system, do not plan being bale to use your ATI AIW card.
It just ain't going to cut it under Linux (blame about why this is goes back and forth, but the end result is that it just won't work). Instead, plan on investing in a Hauppage card. The 350 is a good place to start. -
It's been said here many times...
If you use MythTV, an ATI card will not work. I'll go so far as to say that an ATI AIW card isn't reccomended for any Linux-based PVR work. The coders blame ATI, and ATI says "What? We released Linux drivers!". It's a lot of finger pointing, and in the end is just frustrating to any AIW owner, such as m'self.
The Hauppage on the other hand, is the most reccomended PVR card I've seen - Both on the Linux end and the Windows end of things. It has a built in mpeg decoder/encoder, which allows the systems CPU to focus on things other than converting video for playback.
I recently came across the Hauppage 350 for $160 and am seriously considering one, however as we move into the HDTV age, I'm wondering if an HDTV-capable solution might be a better option.
(Yes, I realize there's PC-based HDTV options, but the Mac link was handy) -

Hauppauge MediaMVP is less than 100 bucks at PCAlchemy
There's pleny of mediamvp hacking (including work on a mythtv client) and 3rd party client replacements out there like gbpvr (how to article on my site )
*Shrug*

Re:Too simpleBravo!
I'm surprised that Mythtv hasn't been mentioned here as an alternative to the DRM'd crap more than once.
What more can you ask for? linux/wireless/radio/dvd/mediaplayer-dvd-mp3 -ogg-lame-wma/weather/news/web/mysql/ripping dvd/photoalbum/DVR -pause-rewind-record/PIP/Schdeduled recording/front-end/back-end/all-in-one/
What's not to drool over?? Beats the pants off any commercial product, plus you get to build it yourself!
Many, many sites to help you get started , !
All without someone watching over what you're doing with what you've purchased......
