Jesus, I've heard of people doing some stupid things just to attract visitors to their web sites, but making dozens and dozens of high-quality, up-to-date RPMs for downloading onto a selection of distributions (but usually favouring Mandrake) over a long period of time sounds like a hard way to do it.

Especially considering the RPMs are stored on ibiblio.org, and "his" (shared) web forum is somewhere completely different.

Sounds like you're talking bull to me.

My many experiences of his packaging skills have caused me to thank him for doing so much good work for Mandrake (and other distro) users, and providing it for free.

Apt and Synaptic have been ported to Mandrake, and work really well. As a little debian user (through Libranet and Knoppix), I love apt-get and also love Mandrake for its great community support.

You can find apt and synaptic for Mandrake 9.0 here thanks to Texstar.

I'd hate to see Mandrake die, I believe it's the best all-round distro around, easy to install yet powerful, a great learning tool.

Texstar of pclinuxonline, recently posted a bunch of screenshots from Redhat's 3rd beta release known as null. Redhat has made a huge effort via the use of similar icons and themes to make their packaging of GNOME and KDE resemble each other more closely . What do you think?

for people using mandrake 8.2, you can use the official RPMs, or try the texstar RPMs.

They work like a charm, and it took all of about 1 minute to install.

I guess it takes awhile to pile through the submissions. This was posted on pclinuxonline.com recently.

I'm sorry, is pclinuxonline.com the same site as slashdot.org? Do you think maybe it's possible that some Slashdot readers don't read pclinuxonline regularly? It probably is possible, since I've never even heard of the site. Considering only 78 people have read the article on pclinuxonline at this point, I would conjecture that that's quite possibly the case for an overwhelming majority of the Slashdot readership.

But maybe your complaint wasn't that it was posted on another site somewhere on the Internet. Maybe your complaint was, as it states in your subject line, that it was "old news." Well, the article on pclinuxonline was posted Sunday afternoon, and the Slashdot article was posted Sunday night. Doesn't really sound like "old news" to me.

So, pardon my rudeness, but shut the fuck up!
