Themes are not actually useful. Anything other than purely aesthetic themeability (ie. the theme changes nothing other than some colours) is bad, in terms of UI design. The reason why everyone copies Windows' UI is because it's familiar. Uniformity of interface is a BIG DEAL.

Interfaces should be internally consistent, but there's no reason why my interface has to be identical to yours. That is, I agree on the importance of all my applications behaving the same way. But I should be able to edit things like key-bindings, location of buttons on window decorations, colors, typefaces, etc.

There is a benefit to having default settings be consistent across platforms (e.g., Windows-like keybindings or appearance because that's what most people are used to). The one thing Havoc Pennington was right on about in his rant on usability was the importance of good defaults, because not everybody really cares about or wants to tinker with their interface settings. They should be treated well by whatever is handed to them. But I should be able to customize my environment to suit my needs and preferences. I should not be bound to whatever the average user feels comfortable with.

Those that just want a consistent default interface aren't hurt by themeability. Those that have found a non-default way that works better for them are hurt by a lack of themeability.

I don't know about their long term strategic goals for SharedSource but I don't want to find out, or be a part of it.

Just last week, an employee from Microsoft emailed me about using some source code from my website. I told him he could, but that it must not appear under SourceSafe or published by Microsoft Press. He responded saying, fine, he'll probably use it for something else!

I always thought pobox.com was a good service for that. Never used 'em though, never quite needed what they offered.

pobox.com (didn't I just say that?) isn't much cheaper than Yahoo!'s offer. Subscriptions begin at $15.

Now, to maintain that beyond next month (when the "free" parts of both services end), it would cost me $29.99/yr @ Yahoo plus $19.99/yr per EACH forwarding address at Mail.com. That's almost $90/yr.

Instead, for $15/yr, I got three forwarding addresses from pobox.com, and have them forwarded to the inbox at my ISP (which I was paying for as part of their service anyway). I have never (and don't intend) to ever reveal my actual ISP inbox address to any site or person, so I can maintain the same level of abstraction I had before, but for $75/yr less than Mail.com and Yahoo.com would like me to pay.

The company I work for is actually pretty good about this sort of thing. In fact, I've occasionally written code for the product that I wanted to be in the public domain (because I knew that I'd want to re-use it myself later), so I just said "I want this code to be in the public domain". They replied "fine, as long as it's not written on company time". An example of such code is my C HashTable. (Yes, I know this has been written a million times before, but all of the other public domain implementations I've seen suck!)

The anti aliased fonts, is that the gtk hack that came some months ago? It looked really ugly. :-P

We've thought about this in detail, that's why GNOME does compat exactly like Windows; instead of breaking old libs, we make new libs with a different name that install next to the old libs. See http://pobox.com/~hp/parallel.html. So no app has to port until they feel like it.

I've had my PhatNoise system for about a month. The physical design is very slick, and so is the software. It installed with no difficulty, just like a normal CD changer. The sound quality seems excellent to me. I'll admit that I'm not a golden ear, and my car system, while decent, isn't audiophile quality; but in general listening, and in a few short non-blind A/B tests, I can't distinguish quality of playback of my MP3s (encoded at 192kbps) from the PhatNoise from playback of CDs in the head unit.

In usage, it behaves exactly like a really big CD changer, up to 99 discs. In a way, that's good - your head unit controls are nicely refined to work with such a changer. On the other hand, if you're trying to find a specific album and song, you really want to have a tree-structured storage, with folders containing subfolders of songs. On the third hand, it could be argued that such an interface would be unsafe to use while driving, between the cognitive load and the need to look at the LCD between button presses.

Some aspects are still a bit beta-ish. I had problems with occasional skips; very infrequent, very minimal compared to CD skips, but still, MP3s shouldn't do that. They went away when I upgraded to the most recent firmware release a week ago. The PhatMan client software isn't fast enough when handling huge collections (100GB+), even after speed improvements in recent versions, and I've made it crash a few times. The firmware update process isn't as smooth as it should be.

The system is very hackable. I swapped out the PhatCart's 6GB hard drive for a 12GB drive I had lying around, which was easy, and I expect a larger drive would be just as simple. (20GB 2.5" drives are $110 these days.) The PhatBox itself is an ARM Linux system, the system files on the PhatCart are unencrypted and in fairly obvious formats, and the PhatDock is just a standard IDE-USB bridge. I've already written a simple client which uploads albums to the PhatCart from Linux, so I don't need to use PhatMan in Windows. Overall, the combination of excellent production values and relatively open internals is refreshing. Hopefully they can be persuaded to open the source to the PhatBox's main player daemon as well...

Compared to the competition: The Rio Car (AKA empeg) is way cooler, without a doubt, since it has its own display and controls and can use them more flexibly. Unfortunately it's much more expensive, and it must be installed in-dash and does not have a detachable face. For me, carrying around a DIN-sized unit and inserting/removing it for every car trip is unacceptable. On the other end of the price range, SSI makes a unit (the Neo 35) that's somewhat cheaper, but they seem to be cutting corners (like using 3.5" drives which are not intended for mobile use), the system doesn't seem nearly as polished in general, and there are some reports from unhappy customers out there.

Probably the most significant competition is from the various CDR-based MP3 head units. Carrying around a handful of CDRs, each containing a dozen albums, is a reasonable and cheaper alternative to hard-drive units for many users. highwaymp3.com reviews such units, which have gotten a lot better recently. Do your research carefully before buying one, though. They generally don't have upgradeable firmware, meaning that any bugs or missing capabilities will never be fixed. They also won't change in response to emerging standards, so the useful lifetime may be short. For example, imagine if you'd bought a MP3 player several years ago that didn't support VBR, or that glitched when playing back tracks with id3v2 tags. You'd probably want to replace it by now.

On the whole, I'm very glad I bought the PhatNoise. It's cool, it's useful, I've really enjoyed having it in my car, and for $600 (plus another $100 or $200 to bump up the capacity to 20-30GB), it's not all that expensive for what it offers. I never have to change discs or plug in or unplug anything, I just have hundreds of hours of music available to me, all the time. I'd definitely recommend it to gadget fiends in its current state, and when they ship the final release with up-to-date firmware and options for more capacity, I'd have no reservations about recommending it even to non-techies who just happen to want hundreds of hours of music on tap in their car.

Someone else has pointed out that using ""+x where String.valueOf (x) or Integer.toString (x) would be more appropriate is plain bad programming, and it seems your knowledge is a little lacking if you think that Vector is usually implemented with a linked list - take a look at the source for Sun's implementation some time. Vector is a perfectly reasonable data structure to use, and has a great deal of convenience over a bare array, with very little performance cost on good VMs. (If you use ArrayList, of course, you get slightly better performance in most cases, due to it not being synchronized).

There are places where Java performs well, and there are places where Java performs badly. Your tests show neither, particularly.

I had the same worries, and was starting to have some odd problems with Bigfoot (some mail sent to me was bounced by Bigfoot!!).

So, I just switched to pobox. I think it's $15 per year for basic service, and offers mail forwarding just as Bigfoot does - the only thing I wish it would do is let me forward email to multiple addresses, but I can live without that for more stable service.

I got US$20/page for something I wrote back in '96. I was dumb (well, naive) and poor back then, and I was willing to listen to the acquisitions editor when he told me that "some of [his] better authors write 4 chapters a week!" That sounded pretty good to me... US$2400 a week, maybe. Wow!

I'm not sure who these people are that can do that (hacks? machines? hack-machines?), but it's sure as hell not me. I try to budget 3 hours or so per _page_ right now, if I want for there to be any quality in it at all. Even that, that's probably not even fully-allocated time. It doesn't include:

• interacting with the editor/publisher in the first place
• brainstorming
• dedicated research
• follow-up after you've submitted your rough to the editor/publisher
• probably a bazillion other things I'm forgetting about right now (maybe I'd blocked those things out of my memory for the pain involved...)

The next book project I did, I was offered it at US$20/page again (enough though it was 2.5 years later, the market had changed, I had more experience, etc.). I asked for US$25/page, and was given it immediately. (Which can only make you wonder what the "true upper limit" on such a thing is.) Still, the money was garbage for the work I had to put into it.

Even then, don't just look at the money. The "standard contract" for a book that most tech publishers give you is... well, to call it one-sided doesn't even begin to describe it. :-) If you hope to have any kind of personal involvement or control over the project or what happens to it after publication, you're likely in for quite an uphill battle.

Does all this mean that I won't write again? No way! I love writing, and I keep going back to it time and time again. I might even be getting better at it over the years, and that puts me in a better position to negotiate contracts, pitch ideas, plan the book the way that I want the book to be, etc. It's hard work, and there's a lot of BS involved, and the pay isn't great, but it can be incredibly gratifying to do.
