Re:TERRI SCHIAVO (December 3, 1963 - March 31, 200
I'm sorry to beat this horse to death, but the only organ that mattered, the thinking brain, was completely gone. Period. End of story. Gone. It is unbeleivable how many people are in such denial about that fact. No thinking brain tissue means no mind and no person and no possibility there was any concious response to anything.
Indeed I have looked in the facts of the case, moreso appearently than most people. The real shame is that not even one video (and I've seen video on EWTN), which would have been enough to destroy the claims of the husband's medical experts, got the same air time by the press. Quite honestly, considering the maltreatment Terri recieved from the medical community (being familiar with the facts of the case I'm sure you are aware of the malpractice claims suscessfully brought against her caretakers), it's amazing she was responsive at all. You should read the opposition before regurgitating such completely inaccurate information. You can start by visiting the site hosted by the priest who was with Terri and her family through to the end: http://www.priestsforlife.org/terri/index.htm -
Re:TERRI SCHIAVO (December 3, 1963 - March 31, 200
The family and thier representatives probably presented thier arguements emotionally because they felt that would be the most effective means of convincing people to intervene on thier behalf. The problem is that popular media largely ignored them and the family's reps didn't have the capability to subvert them to reach the public. Do yourself a favor (and others) and visit the web site hosted by the priest who I was quoting: http://www.priestsforlife.org/terri/index.htm. As for watching videos, it doesn't take a genious to figure out that someone who responds to you is not braindead. The evidence suggests to me that the medical experts supporting the family are right and that the populace in general has bought into a position developed and presented by the medical experts hired by Terri's husband. I've seen vidoes of her myself that confirm what the priest said. Hired 'experts' appear to be using the brain scan as evidence that Terri was PVS and purely reflexive whereas any random person off the street could look at the videos (do you think the governor would intervene without strong evidence?) and realize that she clearly was responsive, not PVS.

Re:Morality?Exodus 21, starting with verse 22:
22 "If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely [e] but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. 23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
While Christianity has replaced the old laws and punishments (the why and how to that are off-topic here), most point to the fact that God said a life has been taken. This does not completely prove that God meant at the moment the cells start dividing, but it is safe to say that after 8 weeks a mother and father would know that the mother is pregnant, and they would know if she didn't have a child after the fight described above.
As for the animal vs human debate, most Christians would say that humans were the only animal made in God's image, and the only ones that posses a soul. A full-page ad in USA Today from November 2000: http://www.priestsforlife.org/media/00-11-02usato
d ayad.htmIn that ad, the point is made: Are sea turtles more valuable than babies? We read in Florida law, "No person may take, possess, disturb, mutilate, destroy, cause to be destroyed, sell, offer for sale, transfer, molest, or harass any marine turtle nest or eggs at any time." (370.12) If we don't have the right to choose to smash the egg of a sea turtle, why should we have the right to choose to smash a baby?
So, while not opposing protection for animals, they do point out that human protections should be at least equal to, if not greater than, protection given to other animal life.

Re:Why?Why do you care about the message the punishment sends? Is the punishment a deterrent for the commission of the crime?
Because if a pedophile knows that raping a child will get her the same punishment as downloading child porn, she might just choose to go do the thing that gives her the greater high -- actually raping a child.
In this country we have a judicial system that is based on the prevention of crime, not retribution.
If you are talking about the US, you could be wrong. As legal theory goes, there are generally few reasons for punishment:
1)retribution/revenge -- we are morally bound to punish wrongdoing/lawbreaking OR the person "deserves it" and we should "get even"
2)local deterrence ("reform") -- the punished person will not commit the crime again
3)global deterrence ("protection of the state") -- no one will commit the crime because of fear of punishment
4)incapacitation -- the person cannot commit the crime due to incarceration
You may also consider a different set of similar reasons:6. The Purposes of Punishment: 3 to 5 purposes are traditionally cited:
a) reform or rehabilitation
b) incapacitation
c) general deterrence and/or the securing of social peace
d) retribution
Or these:First, they review four traditional arguments justifying capital punishment[:] retribution, deterrence, reform and protection of the State.
The US system is largely based on #1 only -- retribution is the just reason for prosecution and punishment. As I am not a lawyer (yet), I do not consider myself an authority on the subject, but I have had law professors lead me through this concept before, and they have all come to the same conclusion -- the US system of justice is based largely upon retribution.
One such example that Western justice systems serve the purpose of retribution is the Nuremberg courts. It is pretty obvious that there is no method of deterring dictators from committing crimes against humanity. Thus, Nuremberg did not occur for #3. There was also no need to make sure the men on trial were prevented from committing the same crimes again -- it was virtually impossible for them to rise to that level of power and instigate another Holocaust. Thus, #2 as well was not a reason (similarly #4 was not a reason). That leaves retribution.
Some information about which I speak:1 - It is to be remembered that one of the primary reasons for the law's existence, indeed the state's existence, is that people are to be relieved of their need to strike out against those who have wronged them. Not to argue the rights or wrongs of it; it is entirely natural for an individual, when injured or harmed by another or others, to seek revenge and retribution.
OK, I'm sure that I've sufficiently lost any reader, as I've lost myself in all this HTML mark-up I've done in this comment, mixed with the myriad of sources I've drawn from here. You can forget this comment ever existed, or you can use it as a springboard into more information on theory of punishment ("penology"). It really is quite fascinating. -

I support partial birth abortion.
Why? this is an innocent human being, born, and murdered with a pair of scissors being rammed into his (or her) skull.
Why would any right-thinking person do such a thing?

Brenda Pratt Shafer, a registered nurse from Dayton, Ohio, assisted Dr. Haskell in a Partial Birth Abortion on a 26-1/2 week (over 6 months) pre-born baby boy. She testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee (on 11/17/95) about what she witnessed. According to nurse Shafer, the baby was alive and moving as the abortionist "delivered the baby's body and arms - everything but the head. The doctor kept the baby's head just inside the uterus. The baby's little fingers were clasping and unclasping, his feet were kicking. Then the doctor stuck the scissors through the back of his head, and the baby's arms jerked out in a flinch, a startle reaction, like a baby does when he thinks he might fall. The doctor opened up the scissors, stuck a high-powered suction tube into the opening and sucked the baby's brains out. Now the baby was completely limp.

I'm waiting for the Abortion Simulator game. Objective: First one to fill a dumpster with babies wins!

Science?!?! Researchers?!?!
Science, is that what this is? I thoght it was more along the lines of quackery. And Researchers I didn't see anything about researchers in the cnn post. The article says
...A joint U.S.-Turkish team of 10 explorers plans to make the arduous trek up... these are explorers. Explorers may be scientists and/or researchers but they are not necessarily so.And what about the sponsors "Daniel P. McGivern, president of Shamrock- The Trinity Corporation" Hm... Shamrock, Trinity Corparation. This sounded like a Christian organization to me. So I did some quick checking.
Here is an interesting quote of Mr McGivern "There is value in suffering. We need only look to Christ's death for proof." Read more here
If you are not yet convinced of Mr McGivern's religious leanings check this page where he attacked the movie Dogma because it "openly blasphemes God, defames all organized religion, and particularly mocks Catholic teachings" What's wrong with this guy? Hey it's only a movie right?
Haven't had enough yet; two more links that show Mr McGivern's religious leanings. One at Christian Answers and one at Priests For Life.
I find it very disappionting that a major media outlet like CNN is covering this bullshit. Also, I know it's Tuesday but aren't there better stories to post on
