This or similar devices will allow you to put a 'whitelist' on your phone of numbers you accept and all other numbers are diverted to voicemail. Most scams won't waste time leaving voicemails so you never even know they've phoned and every time you get a message from a legit number you can call back and/or add them to your white list. -
Re:I'd have more time for them ...
Get on the national Do Not Call registry. Got rid of 90% of the problem for me.
Doesn't stop local spammers, though your state may have its own Do Not Call registry.
Doesn't stop politicians in any case. But them you can get righteously pissed-off at, because they're not just doing a job, they're trying to fuck up your economy and legal system.

Re:Hey, we could use that in the U.S. too
If any are interested, I have been using http://www.privacycorps.com/products/?id=20, it works great. The phone spammers get one shot at calling me, then its adios! I hit a few buttons and add them to the database. They can still call, but the phone does not even ring.
Unfortunately, it has recently been discontinued. Anyone know of a similar product?

Re:Hey, we could use that in the U.S. too
Back when I actually answered my land line, if I ever heard total silence on the other end, I would not say anything and just wait. The telemarketer computer generally hung up after a few seconds.
These days, my phones are set to not ring, I have no voicemail/answering machine, and I don't answer it. People who know me call my cell phone. The landline is generally for outbound calls only.
I was seriously considering getting this product: http://www.privacycorps.com/products/?id=4 though they seem to be perpetually out of stock.

Re:Handling Caller ID Spoofing?
There is a hardware product (google "Caller ID Manager") that costs about $100 which can enable white-list filtering on her phone.Sadly, it appears to have been discontinued.

Re:Internet-connected phone
A simpler way is to use this device. Best hundred bucks I've ever spent.

Caller ID Manager
I have one of these. They work great. Granted it works on a blacklist instead of a whitelist, but the blacklist gets populated pretty quickly and I've found that I don't need to add entries very often at all. You can hook up an answering machine, and any "blocked" calls can get sent directly to the answering machine without ever ringing the phone. You can block with wildcards, so entire area codes, certain prefixes, ranges, etc.. It's really very nice. I paid like $100 for mine.

Use a call blocker
The following product works like a charm for me at home with junk calls:

I'm surprised that more companies don't sell things like this. If it were cheaper and sold in box stores everyone would probably have one. It's a little pricy, but I love the results. -
Re:Absolutely correct...
This device does exactly what you want. While I think the user interface is a poster child of badness, the function of it is major-league cool.

Re:Asterisk
If you weren't such an asshole/idiot, you'd notice that someone else has indicated that such a device does exist: http://www.privacycorps.com/products/?id=20

You want one of these.

Re:Please make them STOP.You can stop it yourself.
You already know who the valid faxers are. put them on a whitelist in this box.

Approved faxes get thru. Everyone else gets the boot.
Done.

Re:Spoof away - I still screen my calls, do you?The new scam now is people calling doing "surveys".
These are immune from calling list rules. In any case, I am amazed you spent 6 months of agro to solve a problem you could have solved for $100 with this:
http://www.privacycorps.com/products/?id=20
What's it worth not to have to go over and look at the caller ID, or getting a call in the middle of the night and having it be a farking fax machine?
This device lets you program an action for each phone number. Perhaps the coolest thing is that you can program a number to not ring the phone AND also not go to the answering machine.. it just rings (silently) forever.. useful for those people who you don't want to hear from for any reason.
And yes, there is a 2 digit code a caller can punch in to make the device ring when they call from a non-included phone #.
Sorry this sounds like an ad, but considering the mac mini people are always writing ads masquerading as content, what the hell.

Re:Is this law really needed? We have Caller ID -- we can refuse to answer the phone. If crank calls were a major concern, you'd see market solutions to the problem.
Crank calls are a concern, and the market HAS come up with solutions to the problem.
http://www.privacycorps.com/products/?id=20
So there goes that part of your argument.
The other issue that you cannot possibly be dense enough to miss is that the ringing of the phone, the going to look at the caller ID box, etc. to determine that the call is unwanted are an annoyance just like spam.
If you disagree, you should have no problem posting your land-line and cell-phone numbers as a reply to my post. After all, as you said, any crank calls you get are not a problem, yada yada.
Furthermore, Note that your blogger profile has no picture, no phone number, just the town and state.
A quick search shows your phone numbers to be unlisted. For someone who advocates that we need no laws to protect us from harrasment, you certainly do keep a low profile.
Now, I bet that in 20 minutes I could find you thru free, online, public records.
Do you believe that links to these public databases which contain your personal info should be published here?
Or do you believe that some market forces (other than those provided by Sig) would prevent it if it you thought it were a problem?
Or do you believe that there should be some law against it, like harrasment or stalking?
In other words, do you just advocate no protections for people because you think it doesn't affect YOU?
