Re:There are only two options here...
For God wrote in Lisp code
When he filled the leaves with green.
The fractal flowers and recursive roots:
The most lovely hack I've seen.
And when I ponder snowflakes, never finding two the same,
I know God likes a language with it's own four-letter name.Parody by Bob Kanefsky of "God Lives on Terra" by Julia Ecklar

His Life, his choice but...
'till it's not fun or -at least- interesting:
"I mean to live forever if I can
By any trick of nature or of man
There's so much I haven't done,
haven't tried or seen or won,
That I mean to live forever if I can."...from "Imortality Stomp" by Leslie Fish

The Word of God (from final verse)
Lyrics and melody © 1994 by Catherine Faber ...Deep in flower and in flesh, in star and soil and seed,
The truth has left its living word for anyone to read.

The Comforts of Home
--------------------
I don't care if the ship's high tech.
I don't care if it has a holodeck.
I don't care if there's life support.
Okay I guess I need the life support.
But anything beyond that, I don't care,
As long as there's a place somewhere a man can go.
[SNIP]
And even though your guts may ache
I know that you will make it
So you'll find a place to go
Right into space.
Who checks the air locks anyhow?
A million years from now it may reach home.

Re:Women want light
Bright lights make for dark shadows. Evil lurks in the shadows. You can be far safer with better night vision and being aware of your surroundings. In those circumstances, a bright flashlight, kept off until you need it, could be a very effective weapon for self defense. Blind an attacker, kick him where it hurts then retreat into the shadows in which he can no longer see.
Night vision in your friend. Bright lights destroy that. Astronomers have known it for centuries. "Seeking out the darkest place to better see the light..."

Re:ID's advantage of evolution
God? I have no problem with God....
large scale intitutional organized religion... is a topic for another discussion.
concerning the topic at hand, I think Catherine Faber gave the best summary I have ever heard:
http://www.echoschildren.org/CDlyrics/WORDGOD.HTML
Or to hear it as Cat intended
http://www.prometheus-music.com/audio/wordgod.mp3
I wanted to add an excerpt here, but the piece really needs to be appreciated as a whole (it's only about 40 lines), so instead, I'll just
quote the single explanitory line that appears at the first link above:
"This song was inspired when a friend of mine complained to me about a run-in with some Creationists, and asked "what can you say to such people?" The first words that popped out of my mouth were "humans wrote the bible. God wrote the rocks." - Catherine Faber -
Re:the impossible
To continue off topic, Billie is great, love her music.
The quote is actually from another song by another of my favorite, but far less well known, singers. Julia Ecklar wrote a song for the movie Ladyhawke, which was never used, and the quote comes from that song.

When the states and the cities fall,
When your back is against the wall;
Black powder and alcohol.

Opinions on such matters are notably variable, and one is pretty much as good as another...
You don't agree? Well, that is your undisputed right! 'cause the above is just My opinion!
For another opinion try:

Words and music: Credits
I have this from some apparently-now-vanished web page:
The question of the merits of different programming languages has often been called a "religious argument", except maybe by those who assume that theres obviously One Right True and Only Way and it begins with C. This track is on the Roundworm CD, available for $15 from Prometheus Music, http://www.prometheus-music.com/
CD: Roundworm Label: Prometheus Music
Credits: Julia Ecklar: lead vocals & guitar. Kristoph Klover: 6-string guitar
Story Behind the Song
The question of the merits of different programming languages has often been called a ``religious argument,'' except maybe by those who assume that of course there's One Right True and Only Way and it begins with a C.

Not completely false, eitherApple has changed what you can do with the music AFTER you have purchased it.
True — and Apple lost a LOT of my goodwill the first time they reduced user rights. However, Apple's DRM still allows you to burn purchased songs to CD, in a form that can be re-ripped and abused in all the standard ways. The four times I have been decided to buy via ITunes, the first thing I did afterwards was create a physical CD, and re-rip to MP3; this reduced my inconveniece when a DRM downgrade occured between purchases 3 and 4. Fortunately (?), I own more than one PC. The "games and toys" box has iTunes on it. The "serious work" machine does not... but does have several semi-pro and pro-am grade audio packages, and an external hard drive (which is backed up) with all of my MP3's. (And yes, they are all from my ripping legal purchased CDs, legal CD burns, or various free legal downloads.)
While a real paranoid wouldn't have the machines on the same home network, I settle for keeping them firewalled behind separate NAT routers, dangling off of my main home router. (I can accept the extra 2 ms packet latency in my gaming.)
At least with the Sony CDs, the DRM stayed the same. Apple has changed what you can do with the music AFTER you have purchased it.
To make a blatantly prejuducial analogy, that's like saying that being detained (and gang-raped by the guards) indefinitely in a Pottsylvania prison isn't as bad as being quietly detained without charges for two months at Gitmo before being released, because only the US constitution ever said you had any rights otherwise. They're both immoral, but do differ in both character and degree.

Fire in the skyFrom "Fire in the Sky" by Jordin Kare (mp3)
Prometheus, they say, brought God's fire down to Man,
And we've caught it, tamed it, trained it since our history began.
Now we're going back to Heaven just to look Him in the eye,
And there's a thunder 'crost the land, and a fire in the sky.Gagarin was the first, back in 1961,
When like Icarus undaunted, he climbed to reach the Sun.
And he knew he might not make it, for it's never hard to die,
But he lifted off the pad and rode a fire in the sky.Yet a higher goal was calling, and we vowed to reach it soon,
And we gave ourselves a decade to put fire on the Moon.
And Apollo told the world we can do it if we try,
And there was one small step and a fire in the sky.Now two decades past Gagarin, 20 years to the day,
Came a shuttle named Columbia to open up the way.
And they said "She's just a truck", but she's a truck that's aiming high!
See her big jets burn. See her fire in the sky.Yet the gods do not give lightly of the gifts that they have made
And with Challenger and seven, once again the price was paid.
Though a nation watched her falling, all the world could do was cry
As they passed from us to glory, riding fire in the sky. -

Now apply this to indie musicYou're right about the publicity effect, but we need to take it one step farther. We can't squeeze the big label musicians out of mindshare because the big music labels are the big news sources (more or less) and have no regret about using the latter channels to promote the former.
What we need to do is use P2P and other systems to publicize independant music. It ought to be possible to create some semi-distributed music recommendation system, preferably combined with free distribution of samples. If anyone would like to work with me on this, e-mail me.
As an ad-hoc beginning, I'm currently listening to The Horse-Tamer's Daughter by Julia Ecklar who I highly recommend.

Re:Doesn't this meanGet ONE blue-light writeable format that is capacious enough for hard drive backups
Isn't that the point of this new standard - creating a standard for High Density DVD ( to coin a phrase, aka Blue-Ray) that is compatable for HDDVDs, HDDVD-RWs and HDDVD-Rs? Define the standard for all the variations so the players that are made to the spec work on the R and RW variants as they become affordable and widespread.
Oh, and a comment on your
.sig - "When one reads Bibles, one is less surprised at what the Deity knows than at what He doesn't know. - Mark Twain" "Man wrote the bible, God wrote the world" - Bob Kanefesky, in the lyrics to "Eternal Flame aka "God Wrote in LISP" (yes, a song about how God had a deadline, so he used Lisp rather than Ada, Basic or C. It's a good example of a filksong, and is available on CD and mp3).--

Re:Possibly very good...
When's the last time _you_ clicked on a google sponsor because of their compelling attraction?
Google's ads tend to be relevant to what I'm searching for, so I click on them often.
Last summer I looked up filk music after seeing something about a "space-themed filk concert featuring Kathy Mar and..." at Stanford the day before the Mars Society convention. I searched for filk, and there was an ad to download some of Kathy Mar's music from mp3.com! I listened to what mp3.com had and then went to the concert. During the concert, I met Kathy and also met the guy who put the ad up.
Oh, did you mean "What was the last time I bought something through Google adwords"? I haven't yet, but I am now a filk fan and plan to buy Prometeus Music's Space CD when it comes out. (Kathy's CD, which I didn't buy, is also a Prometheus CD.)
I also ran $50 worth of ads for my non-revenue-generating bookmarklets site because I thought it would be a cool way to give Google money. I don't know how many people run ads without the intent of making money, though.
