Re:What the hell is wrong with this country?
All in all, everything happening now is a perfect recipe for chaos, and I doubt anybody will realize it until it's too late.
At least you did. Sadly, however, this only qualifies (P.P.S. and sig considered) for psychological treatment these days.

I have always wondered..
...how long the New Germany would survive before starting WW-3.
Germans are a technically Gifted race, who are experts in high technology and quality of workmanship and take pride in what they do.
They are also extremely paranoid, (putting to shame North Irelanders), and always have preferred Control and Order over Chaos and Freedom.
They would have gladly given Bill Gates the key to Internet if he had created Microsoft in Germany.
Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer
has always been their slogan. Its in their genes to control everything. Which is why trains in Germany run on fanatically accurate schedules like 8.32:35 AM and why cops actually are respected by even thugs.
Now, it has been proven.
Inspite of heavy opposition to people's will, the so-called politicians have passed a law that Cheney would be salivating for.

A translators life is cheapTranslating is hardly ever life and death work but one that is now governed by bidding for translation work on sites like Proz and Translators Cafe.
This is a furious worldwide competition between freelancers and agencies which is being won by those who have the lowest costs and get most from the dollar - offshorers, thirdworlders, expats, homeworkers, sweatshoppers.
I have seen rates shift from 10-15 cents a word to 2-5 cents a word. Nurses have a physical location that moderates how low things can go. The world is bigger than a hospital catchment area and there is still room for cuts.

Re:maybe, maybe not
Sure if you want to buy a $5,000 alarm maybe it can do that
;)
But a basic car alarm works like a home alarm.
If the alarm is armed, it WILL go off if any of the doors are opened. In the more advanced models they also sense for glass being broken etc.
Typically, the alarm does not care HOW you got the door open, if the alarm is armed it assumes the person opening the door should not be opening it. With some advanced systems like VIPER,they do have a way to turn off if following the alarm going off, you insert the key into the ignition. But if the alarm does not have that feature then if the alarm remote is not working you are pretty much SOL. -
Re:SCO's on the way to learn somethingMy wife (a professional translator) was kind enough to translate the phrase into Hungarian. It's written with "flying" accents since Slashdot still doesn't realize there's other languages in the world.
2nd person singular:
Dugd fel magadnak a licencedet oda, ahol sose su:t a nap!
2nd person plural:Dugja'tok fel magatoknak a licenceteket oda, ahol sose su:t a nap!
(Technically, it is saying, '..where the sun never shines')Go to ProZ.com for help with other languages.

Even MT (machine trans.) makers admit it'll be yrs
--------
Point 1: Not there yet
--------
Even the best Machine Translation (MT) systems are only useful for what are referred to as "gyst" translations. The makers of the leading systems concede this. One (Transparent Language) says:
"If you are going to disseminate your translation to others, you usually want a human translator to at least look it over and edit it, as in our PersonalPlus translation service level on PlusTranslation.com. If you are going to print or publish your translation, you definitely want the translation done by a competent human translator who has experience in that particular domain..."
Another interesting commentary on this is provided by the president of the American Translator Association, in a letter to President Clinton:
Letter to Clinton
--------
Point 2: There's a better way
--------
The top level systems have extremely large databases (of vocabularies, morphologies, idioms and grammar patterns) and are not currently practical for handheld devices.
A much better solution is using your handheld to connect to other people--people who speak the required langauges--and getting translations from intelligent human beings.
We're working on this.
