SLASHDOT YOU MORONS
Could you PLEASE STOP saying that GoDaddy recanted its support for SOPA!
GoDaddy has NOT withdrawn its official congressional support for SOPA
-
Re:Yea, well...
GoDaddy.com originally supported the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) but quickly recanted its position when the call of a boycott circulated.
Nothing like money-at-stake to reveal whether someone has a spine.
It has been revealed that GoDaddy has NOT withdrawn its official congressional support for SOPA.

Re:Who dumped whom?
Imgur was created for, and thus heavily used by a little site called Reddit. Godaddy is the McDonalds of domain registration.

Re:Sounds like a Sociopath
No, it's just the steroid rage; apparently the guy also plagiarized his entire website and faked his industry credentials.

25,000 is laughably lowThis news has been over Reddit and apparently has been discredited. 25,000 is apparently very low in this industry, and is therefore a joke. The real number is much higher. For the latest info, follow this story and listen to samzdaman who seems to know his stuff: http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/nq17m/godaddy_has_actually_lost_one_million_1000000/ To quote him:
GoDaddy accounts for 30% of all domain registrations, and there are, on average, 27K
.com domains registered PER DAY. -
Google uses Godaddy as a registrar partner
Announced in 2010 Found on Reddit.
It's probably time to remind Google what "Don't be evil" is. Breaking the Internet is definitely a no-no.
I wonder how many other companies need to be reminded of this. Anybody got a list?

Re:Discounts
Use "NODADDY" a Name.com for 10% off transfer ins (COM, NET, ORG, TV, INFO, IN, US, CO, ME & TEL) and also receive 40% off any hosting plans.
HostGator is doing 50% off Shared / Reseller / VPS first month. Coupon code: NOSOPA
Name Cheap has a "special discount deal": BYEBYEGD
DreamHost use NOTOSOPA you get your first registration free.I can't claim credit for this, all came from Reddit
Name.com has a page where they talk about how they don't support SOPA, but "calls on Congress to search for a new way to protect intellectual property rights." So they sound like they'd support alternate legislation that is slightly changed (like OPEN), but honestly almost as bad.
Be aware that many registrars may just be trying to steal business from Go Daddy, and are just pretending to be against SOPA in order to do so. It would be wise to research the policies of these companies before just going for the coupons.

Reddit Boycotts GoDaddy
Reddit users are planning to move domain names from GoDaddy to other registrars over this.
/. readers also thought of a similar protest, but the 3 guys who still used GoDaddy were nowhere to be found. -

Re:That's because
I voted for Zoe Lofgren, and she vigorously opposes this travesty.
Here's a statement she made today, on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/SOPA/comments/nfhhy/member_of_house_judiciary_committee_ama_on_sopa/
(Yes, she has a Reddit account.)
thanks to all for your kind words. My best assessment is that most members of the House who do not serve on the Judiciary Committee have not yet focused on SOPA. People should realize that incredible power they have to impact the thinking of their own Representative on the subject. For example, a very intelligent colleague who is not on the Committee approached me today asking about the bill. Why? He had received an urgent and forthright telephone call from a small business person in his district who is tremendously opposed. He wanted to know more about our Open Act Alternative. This is the power that each of you have with your own Representative.
I have noticed lot of commentary on line, many thoughtful comments, tweets, etc. But most Representatives are not as plugged into the net world as many of you are. To be heard, you must speak, directly and either by phone or in person. Tweets, emails, petitions are nice, but they don't get the same level of attention.
If I had to bet right now (no, not a $10,000 bet!) I would guess that SOPA proponents currently have the upper hand in Congress. But that is because you have not yet been heard from fully yet. That is very much subject to change.
I learned long ago not to try to explain the thinking of other Members of Congress on any given subject. Instead, you should ask them. If they represent you in the House, they most likely will be happy to take your call. Please remember if you do call to be not only forthright but also polite. It's likely that the person answering the phone is some young person who is working long hours for low pay who does not deserve rude treatment. The House is out of session now but I will be happy to participate in AMA on SOPA again in the days ahead. Best wishes, Zoe -
Re:I'm shocked!
>> "There's still room for producers and financiers, they just need to stop thinking that the fact they brought $300k to the table means they can dictate to the end consumer DRM, or double the price."
I agree, but it's going to take some time to edumacate them. Probably not the current generation of players, maybe the up-and-coming. One strength Louis C.K. mentioned in his reddit iama is that when negotiating his contract with Fox, he was willing to walk away if he couldn't structure Louie the way he wanted. He traded off money for control.
Perhaps future entertainment investors will do the same.

Re:Car analogy
Shrink wrap legal agreements aren't enforceable and it's a shocker that the judge didn't know that.
I'm pretty sure that case precedent actually suggests they may be enforceable.
They can't make up crazy things that you can't legally sign away via contract (ie slavery or your first born), but they are widely deemed to be a valid contract.
I'm not sure there's been any ruling which categorically says they aren't enforceable
... possibly in some countries, but generally I think they're more valid than you think. -

More detailed explanation
An interesting explanation of what lead to this was posted by an user on Reddit. (Disclaimer: I'm not from Canada, so I can't confirm/deny what that user said, but there's plenty of upvotes and comments from other canadians lending some credibility to his explanation.)
"This is actually way more complicated than the one paragraph article makes it seem. To fully understand this, you have to know a little bit about Canadian politics. So now I'm going to talk a little bit about Canadian politics.
By some measures, Canada is the most decentralized country in the world, barring absolute anarchies in Africa and all that shit. Power is divided between the Federal Government and the Provincial Governments in an entirely non-hierarchical manner; provinces and the Federal Government each have their own distinct spheres of influence, and the Federal government cannot tell a Provincial Government what to do within the provincial sphere any more than a province could give the Federal Government orders within the federal sphere of influence.
Without getting into huge amounts of details about how power is divided, it's sufficient to say that much, if not all of the powers that would be required to enforce the Kyoto protocol are within the Provincial sphere of influence, however the Kyoto Protocol was signed by the Federal Government essentially unilaterally. So then the Federal Government has to try to bring the provinces on board with Kyoto, to avoid shirking international responsibilities, but it has no power to force the issue. So then, surprise surprise, some of the provinces dont feel like shooting their oil economies in the foot to play ball with a treaty that they never agreed to. Particularly Alberta, which is basically Canada's Texas, decided that the Federal Government had nothing big and scary enough up their sleeve to threaten them into compliance, so they decided they were not going to enforce the Kyoto Protocol internally at all, and the Federal Government could do absolutely nothing about it.
So now it's in a position where it has to either severely cut carbon for every other province that's willing to play along or pay internationally for Alberta's decision to not give a shit. Yes that's right, the Federal government would have to pay for Alberta not meeting the pollution requirements. Not fair? Well then the Federal Government should have made sure people were on board with this before signing instead of bringing home an unpopular treaty it had no power to enforce. OR the Federal Government can drop out of the Kyoto Protocol, as it has done, learn from the mistake and make sure to get the approval of Provincial governments before signing the next environmental treaty that will undoubtedly come up.
TL;DR: Canadian politics is hella complicated, and while no one likes pollution, Peter Kent is 100% right in the article: Signing Kyoto, especially in the way Canada signed it without enough internal support, was a mistake."

Re:How do you patent a style?
++ At least *someone* has heard of a design patent (and you've only been rated a 2!)
I don't know why I bother reading Slashdot any more—definitely not anything to do with patents anyway. Any patent related post is alway smothered by morons who haven't even bothered to learn the basic principles governing patents.
While Apples design suggestions are extreme, and probably not all that helpful to Samsung (but then Samsung should pay for their own industrial design efforts,) their basic point is correct. Apple has not patented the rectangle, or rounded rectangles, or flat screens, or colors, etc. They have protected their industrial design, brand, trade dress, etc. These design patents are part of that effort, and are very reasonable. Apple basically just wants to stop Samsung's wholesale counterfeiting of Apple's packaging, design, styling, etc. Samsung's knockoffs, if you will.
I mean, come on!:

On Reddit yesterday...I know we're supposed to look down on Reddit as Slashdot-lite, but someone posted an interesting question there yesterday:
The ghost of Plato offers you one of two pills. If you take the blue pill, from now on your government will precisely represent the will of its people. If you take the red pill, your country will be seized by an intelligent dictator whose political views are identical to yours. Which will it be?
It's almost a difficult choice until you read things like "I assume it's part of the Patriot Act and I really don't mind", and then you realize you'd grab the red pill so fast you'd yank Plato's arm off. Participatory government is dead.

Re:just like communism...You raise a very interesting point. I have observed that the Russia (the former Soviet Union) and the USA have followed a similar course since the fall of the Eastern Bloc. Both systems have been taken over by corrupt and inefficient economic elites. The difference is that in Russia they admit what has happened, and explicitly refer to the "plutocrats" when talking about their economic situation. In the USA no one has admitted that our economy is run by a clique of incompetent self serving thieves that are enriching themselves at the expense of the US and world economy. Only with the emergence of the Occupy Wall Street movement has there been any public discourse about how intrinsically corrupt our economy has become.
Here is an interesting post on Reddit from someone inside the hedge fund industry about how the game is really rigged. It's an insiders view of how a segment of the corrupt economic system runs.
Furthermore, you have absolutely no chance in terms of access to the best services. Hedge funds have a direct line to investment bank's institutional brokerage teams - these are the guys that spend day and night sucking up to hedge funds, trying to get them the best deals at the cheapest rates. This means that while you're buying stocks and bonds, hedge funds are getting special rights, warrants, sweetheart deals, private placement deals, options, bigger discounts on bonds, and much better bulk commission rates and lower spreads on stocks. If you're paying 4.25$ for a 4.15$ stock, they are paying something like 4.16$. And they are eating alive your profits because when the stock goes up to $4.30, they can activate another warrant to purchase 20m shares at $4.25, diluting the value of your shares.
Next, you lack information and exposure. You have no idea what is going on in the market besides what you see on the news - while hedge funds have analysts working around the clock and a bunch of service providers who give minute-by-minute analysis of their portfolio opportunities and weaknesses in all markets with exposures to nearly everything. Meaning, if there is an opportunity in the real estate market (i.e. legislation), it might take you weeks to get in - hedge funds will have gotten in the minute the legislation was passed. Furthermore, when IPOs come out for companies, hedge funds get top billing on the primary market shares - which means investment banks are selling directly to them. Once the secondary market becomes available, hedge funds are up 15-20% on these investments, sometimes within hours.
Finally, you have no capital compared to these hedge funds. The people who invest in these hedge funds are not just the 1%, they are the 0.1%. These are the guys with 500million dollar bank accounts and the ability to do whatever the fuck they want. Hedge funds know this, and they invest without having to care about whether their clients can pay the rent or send their kids to college. All of that is irrelevant. Their sole purpose is to earn money, not to mitigate risk.

http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/jitk9/how_the_fuck_does_the_frozen_soap_instructional/
The closest thing I can relate with is outdoor concerts. Never been to a LAN party. I will say that attending stuff like Bonnaroo has taught me that nothing substitutes for a good shower. Some people there don't know they have shower trailers or make it some sort of personal goal to not shower.
Sure, you can get by every day with baby wipes, water bottle baths, another layer of deoderant and baby powder. But eventually you end up in a second skin...a sort of "film". You'll understand what I mean if you don't take a shower for 3-4 days. That first shower feels like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon.

Suggestion...There is nothing stopping you from using a GNU System with the linux kernel, or concocting a mix of the linux kernel with GNU & non-GNU software. I whole-heartily share your concern about privacy in the smartphone world, and that is why i would suggest using the Geeksphone with either a linux distribution or Replicant.
I would also suggest using webDAV at home or setup remotely, and configure your calendar, contacts, bookmarks and other file-syncing that way (of course encrypting everything before it hits the wire).
Additionally, in September RMS wrote a great piece on Android that might be of interest to you. Also, this little nugget from Firefox developers doing a pseudo-Q/A on Reddit (i know, i'm sorry) regarding your privacy in the browser might also be of concern to you.
