Re:$30 mil per movie title!
Besides why must Netflix negotiate with Dreamworks?
Because it is easiest to go to the central copyright holder for permissions. There are others you can license from, but only to the degree they're allowed to license. They also likely take a cut of the deals they make. Unfortunately this means dealing directly with a lot of different entities - which can be both expensive and time consuming. Some (like Disney) are hard to deal with (tried that myself).
Isn't there an MPAA
As another said, MPAA isn't a licensing authority. They're more like a union for motion picture companies - they provide racketeering services for everyone that pays their dues, and try to extort money for themselves for those that aren't (yet) paying dues.
Sadly and thankfully, there is no single organization one can go to do manage the licensing. While it would be convenient to have a single entity, it's be too monopolistic. As it is, groups like Right Stuf do exist, but then you get subjected to the gain/loss of whomever they have licensing authority for, and NetFlix is probably trying to avoid another issue like with Starz - which is similar to Right Stuf. They only way to get around that is to deal directly with the Studios yourself. -
Re:Privacy? Huh?
Since the summary didnt tell it: "Extreme Associates produced and distributed sexually degrading material that portrayed women in the most vile and depraved manner imaginable," U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, of the Western District of Pennsylvania, said in a statement.
Obviously, this guy has never been to Japan. If this applies to non-real depictions of such situations, then I know a guy who has some "splainin' to do". Just check out this stash!

Re:Deep Discount DVD
Anime and manga fans might also want to try The Right Stuf. They carry just about everything and some of their weekly specials are unbelievably good.

This is great...

Re:Ruroni Kenshin...
god damn water droplets appearing over people's heads for some reason
You do realize that's a stylized way of depicting unease (beads of sweat)? A lot of the other stuff is a rose-tinted look back at the Meiji era (when dating/etc was different, much like the Victorian era compared to today).
RK is not an action story arc, it's more of a comedy/drama (the manga explains a lot of this better). They spend a lot of time introducing characters, developing them, showing inter-play between them so that later cliff-hangers bring the audience in better. I only watch the DVDs with Japanese audio, so I don't know what the CN version is like. (As a rule, I avoid english dubs of popular anime, only a few are ever acted properly. And if CN is selling RK as an action series, they've missed how to sell it.)
For the action side, I'd say check out the Trust/Betrayal Samurai X set. You probably won't like the 2nd DVD in the set as it's more character development / back plot then action.
For something different, go pickup a DVD of Perfect Blue, which is a nice classical horror flick. -
Import not that expensiveI buy all my CD's over the web, and it is usually cheaper than buying them from a store (then again, where I live CD's are outrageously overpriced anyway). Some URL's:

Re:Ironic the Disney didn't market this movie at a"Bambi eyes" to the max. I know! Isn't she so cute?
Her name is Masaki Sasami Jurai, or just Sasami, from the Tenchi Muyo series, OVAs and movies. There were also OVAs and a TV serial released in which her character was named Pretty Sammy.
You can avoid Sasami here and here for starters.
I have been thinking about avoiding these myself.

Some nice online stores
For a somewhat limited selection, but all DVD and really cheap, try Discount Anime DVD
For a truly excellent selection (and a great hentai section, or so I have been told) in both VHS and DVD, try Right Stuf
For a store with decent selection, plus some good soundtracks and posters and all kinds of stuff (free anime themed email too, if thats your thing), you can go to Anime Nation
Those are the really good online stores that i am aware of. You might not be able to find direct from japan stuff, or some of the more esoteric titles, but you can still find a good selection. -
Who needs theatres
For all of your anime needs just check out rightstuf.com. They have pretty much every anime known to man that has been released on VHS and DVD, but best of all its usually in stock and at very cheap prices. Plus they offer bundles, like for Cowboy Bebop, where you save over 50% from the Perfect Sessions price if you buy a regular bundle of the full set.
Not to mention they also have T-shirts, posters, and all of those other misc. items any true diehard cant live without. Which reminds me I gotta go there now and purchase the Cowboy Bebop, dont ever get the foreign sub 4-DVD set, the subbing is horrible. -
The DVD set is sold out
According to sites that monitor this sort of thing, demand has already oustripped the first run. So if you're late in coming, you'll have to wait for a second run of DVDs.

What they don't realize

Movie isn't newTwo things, one the actuall thing comes from one of the distributors of anime Rightstuf. They posted that recently, and of course every anime site that posts news regulary like mine [blantant plug]Ultimateanime.com [/blantant plug] posted something about it. Manga, as has been know to the community, doesn't say much on their sites but tells the distributors who then does their PR work for them =)
Secondly, c'mon taco, you knew about these movies before hand. Death & Rebirth true, has been out for quite some time and so has EoE. Some may not like Death and Rebith much, but EoE is awesome.
Personally I think EoE helps bring the series to a closure...if there ever is such a thing in that series. It also explains what happens to a alot of the characters in the final 2 eps. We see several people die off and never find out till EoE, well Kaji is still a mystery.

USA anime companies are the worst kind.
Anime DVDs and VHS is really not worth the current price. In most industries these prices are consider rip off. What do you get with USA Anime DVDs? Not much. What you get are Sub standard DVD video quality (they compressed the hell out of the video), no or little extras, DVD disks that only plays on one DVD player and not the other, sub audio quality, bad script translation, bad voice acting, overlays (all overlays are consider bad, ie edit), anime companies that never listen to their customers, bad packaging, bad customer support, missing episode on DVD disk, and the worst thing is that they never fix the problems even if they knew it existed. The list just keep on going.
Here is one current example: Captain Tylor box set was shipped with one missing episode on disk four. If they had any quality control at all they would have notice it right away. The bad thing about it is that some people got their shipment early and told the company about it. Do you know what they did? Instead of recalling the DVDs and stop the shipping of the current bad DVDs in their inventory they decide to just ship it. The only way you can get the fixed disk 4 is to mail in your receipt and pay $4 for shipping. Let said kid Joe Doe bought it, the first thing he will do is to throw away or misplace the receipt like most people do when he notice the first disk was working right only later on to find out that disk 4 had a missing episode. This is so mess up that the only an anime company can get away with this kind of stuff.
USA anime company are so cheap that it just want made me want to cry. They overprice their product while giving sub standard quality work. They are only getting away with this because you have stupid 15 years kids that never work in their life defending those sorry companies. I take my Fansubs anytime.

Re:Does Manga == Anime?
to put it roughly, manga is the term for comics in japanese. all manga is printed. anime is short for animation, and thus only refers to animated material.
the two are incorrectly interchanged due to their inherently close relationship; when osamu tezuka (father of anime) created astroboy he began what is known as the field of anime - but he was an established manga artist when he did so.
go here for a great introduction to anime. -
Re:Ranma 1/2!!!
I have to agree with veldrane. Ranma ½ kicks butt. Taco, what's with ignoring the comedies? They're the best, IMO.
I get my stuff online from Right Stuf. Good selection.
