CF card reader with built in Hard Drive?
What about one of these:
6 in 1 Card Reader (SM/MMC/SD/CF/Microdrive/Mstick) + Takes 2.5" HDD (not Supplied)
According to the product info, it is battery powered and does not need a PC. You can copy data between flash cards and the internal hard drive.
Using one of these readers, the questioner could copy photos from their camera's flash card to a larger hard drive. They might then post the flash card home, while retaining a backup with them in case it is lost in the post.
I hope this helps.

It will suck if it's anything like this mouse...
At work I am having to use a free mouse that came with the computer system, despite my insistance that a decent mouse would add to productivity we have ended up with this completely and utterly useless peice of crap (which is why it's only a fiver I guess).
Ignoring the fact that as a normal mouse this is already pretty bad (sticky and clicky buttons and badly formed shape in the palm), that little blue thing on top? Pointless! I don't know what muppet designed this thing but it is utterly unusable, basically it is trying to be a trendy new type of scroll wheel or something. But, major point number one, it isn't a button and doesn't count as a third middle click. All it does is goes up and down, not like a wheel but just like a thing that you can push up or down or leave to spring back to the centre.
This might (might!) have been a decent design, although I'm still doubtful even then, but basically when you go to "scroll" down or up, no matter how careful you are just to tap it up or down, it almost always scrolls right to the very end of the document. They claim this is better than the mouse wheel somehow!
Anyway, slightly back on topic, if the Apple mouse is basically this but with horizontal scrolling too, then it's gonna be crappy. The Apple idea did conjur up in my mind the idea of a mouse with a track ball where the wheel is at the moment. Although perhaps complicating matters somewhat, it's also logical (in my mind, ha) so that there are two degrees of movement through the mouse (somewhat like moving your head whilst moving your eyes at the same time). This could (amongst other more pratical things) be pretty cool for doing the walking through Doom3 (for example) whilst at the very same time "looking" around freely using the track ball. -
Re:My experience with the DP-500
Your Windows/Samba comment means that it uses SMB for filesharing. Easy enough.
Sorry, no - it uses something else to get to the windows machine, I just simply mapped a drive to Samba shares on other machines.
I got mine from Scan. It's not the cheapest thing in the world.
On the other hand, you can mount the firmware on linux and change all the images! -
Been out for ages...
This has been on sale for ages (before Christmas) as I was thinking of getting it just before the New Year.
Scan's DVD Player Page
Have been selling them in the UK.

Re:Hi
Maybe because the player has been available for a while - in the UK at least.

Buy onefrom scan in the UK if you fancy it. £257 equals about USD $400 + shipping.
So, not cheap, but if the guy's gotta have it...
-
KiSS sounds familiar..
Scan have had loads of offers of KiSS players in the recent past, here in the UK.
I can't quite remember if they were KiSS players per se or Scan ones, manufactured by KiSS.
Either way, I bet that these new players will be available there soon...

Available in the UK
In the UK they're sold as the Scorpio from Scan and they come with power supply. I have the indigo version and I love it. Best case I've ever had.

Re:For the UK, try dabs.com or overclockers.co.ukWhile I hate to contradict, I've had mixed experience with Dabs - sometimes excellent as you describe, sometimes a bit off (difficulty returning DOA things, confusion about time-to-delivery). Nothing too major, just enough to take the shine off.
The place (UK) I get my stuff from now (and order from for people who ask me to spec machines) is Scan.co.uk. They seem a bit more clueful than Dabs and a bit less box-shifty, have similar prices on most things (certainly close at least) and will build and test (important!) a system for I think 60 quid on top of component prices. That might be enough to remove the price advantage over say Dell, but bear in mind that this is an entirely custom spec. I'd recommend them.

Another good UK is scan.co.uk
My friends and I use scan.co.uk. They are the cheapest I've found, delivery is fast, and they refund your money with absolutely no quibble if you return it (even if it's not faulty). They also do dozens of special offers every day, at TodayOnly. No connection to them, just my friends and I are satisfied customers. Recommended.
Building your own computer is probably cheaper, but the major benefit is that you can make sure you have an ideal fit for your money of the best component parts. I remember one major UK store headlining the cheapest P4 system available, but independent tests showed a cheap motherboard crippled the speed to well below an equivalent P3 system. Computers these days are so much like lego blocks my friend built his in under 1hr on his first attempt.

Available also In the UKat scan computers as the "scan scorpio" case. I have one and it's the best case I've ever had, except mine had a faulty psu originally, but they are a joy to work on. The removable drive bays are great!

Patch panels...
Depending on how many free drive bays you have, there are certainly drive bay mounting panels to present most of the common things you'd want to plug and unplug regularly - audio, USB, 1394 and serial.
An external one (intended for laptops, but what the heck) is made by Mobility Electronics. There was an internal one featured on Scan's Today Only page the other day, with temperature monitoring and all sorts - I'm pretty sure it was made by ASUS, although I can't find it on their site.
I've seen several cases with front panels like this, too. Even my gf's cruddy e-machines PC does that. Coolmaster case with front USB (and optional 1394 IIRC). -
Re:Price standards
err...where do you buy CD's? have you tried Scan and Jungle i've never paid more than 50p for cd's in fact i just bought 100 for 47p each including VAT and next day delivery...they'r 80 minute 16X compatible... If you buy them from Dixons or PC World then expect to get ripped off...but expect that about anything you buy from there!!!

Scan SC2000
For a cheap unit with a wide range of features and impressive reviews, you might want to check out the Scan SC2000. I haven't tried it, but it comes recommended, especially for UK buyers.
I'm tempted, but it'll be hard to justify to my better half, especially after touting DVD playback as a good reason for buying my PS2... -
Uk: Scan Own brand
Ok, UK biased answer, but Scan has an own brand player here which I think is pretty nice. Mp3s are limited to 8.3 name display. Also multi region for those of us in the UK who suffer... I just bought one as a christmas prezzie, and ahem, playtesting it hasn't revealed any problems.
It does lack a proper power off button though - stand by mode only for some reason, and doesn't have an integrated dolby decoder.

What about availability overseas
This player might do PAL->NTSC conversion but does it go the other way round too? (It's not a major concern to me since my TV will do it anyway but not everyone has a nice glitzy 16:9 tv)
I've been considering getting a Scan SC-2000 which does appar to have a very similar feature list to this player, except that it's build quality is rated as very good in any review I've found. It's meant to have very good audio sync and good picture quality - has anyone actually used one?
The only downside to the scan player is that it cant disable macrovision (only region coding) but that doesn't really concern me since i cant think of any reason why i'd want to copy a dvd to vhs <cringe>.
At 160 quid or thereabouts + vat it's quite a good price. ($230 + tax) -
Rackmounts in the UK
Cheapest source of cases in the UK I have found is Scan Computers. They are selling for £150 apiece.
If you want fully built systems, Transtec do nice 19" systems for approx 1200 each. -
Re:How about SCSI DVD-ROM drives?
For us living in the UK. Try SCAN'S Today Only page. It has a selection of SCSI DVDs for less than 100(ukp). Nice...
:-) BadSoft, where did you want to go again...? -
Re:Memory latency
Scan are selling 133mhz RAM currently.
Yes, I know they're in the UK, but I'm sure there are places selling it in the US too.
