Re:HTPC gaming chicken-and-egg
Scorched Earth
Seconded.
Newer incarnations, most of which I've never tried: Scorched 3D, a browser-playable Java version called Scorch 2000, and others.

Re:MIRV
Depending on how lenient your work is (I love my job), you might want to try this. It's a web-based remake of SE in Java.

Re:MIRVS!I've never played xtanks, but I believe the game you're referring to is Scorched Earth, and old VGA (and VESA) DOS game. There's now an Internet-enabled version called Scorched Earth 2000 and a 3D version called Scorched Earth 3D, which even my 1GHz Pentium M notebook can't play!

Rrgh... Guess I'll just buy fewer games then
Probably get flamed as being full of shit for posting this, but oh well. In all honesty, I don't buy any games that I don't download first. I know it's illegal, I understand that. But right now I don't have enough cash to throw at every game I find interesting. I know companies always release demos of their games, but demos these days are typically so limited that they are almost worthless. Great, I've seen the best level of the 30 that you have in your game.
The end result for me will be me spending less money on games because I can't risk throwing $50 on some game that I'm going to find out really sucks. Oh well... I've been finding Scorched Earth really damn amusing lately anyways. My Death's Head will 0wn you.

Scorched Earth 2000 (released under the GPL) -
Two Words
Scorched. Earth.
One of the greatest games ever, and the version I linked to (Scorched Earth 2000) has network multiplayer capabilities and is in Java, so it should work on Windows, Linux and Mac clients, or anything else with a web browser and JVM. The game is incredibly simple (just pick an angle, power level, and optionally a weapon), and the basics can be picked up in five minutes or so. Despite the simplicity, though, there are very few things in life that beat killing 4 friends at once with a Death's Head nuclear MIRV. -
Scorched Earth remake are already made
There is one for GTK called xscorch. Also, there is a Scorch 2000 that can be run within browser using Java runtime.

Try a multiplayer tank game!Try something like Scorched Earth 2000. It's a Java based cross-platform network-multiplayer version of the classic tanks-lob-shells game. Even better, it's GPL (no worries about legal stuff!).
Tank games require a combination of skill and luck that tends to reward skilled play, while still remaining accesible to newbies if that's a concern. Someone can learn to play decently in 5 minutes, rather than the 40-50 frustrating hours it takes to become decent at Quake/UT/Counterstrike/FPS-of-the-month.
Note that there's an ad banner, but that's just HTML, so it can be removed without any real hassle.

Scorched Earth 2k
I just had to recommend this. Great gameplay over network.

Re:Short Term
If it's Scorched Earth you're looking for, you might want to try Scorched Earth 2000. It's a java-based implementation of the old game. You can play with up to eight colleagues, er, I mean, friends.
The link may be slow, so be patient. -
It is still out there, and you can play online!
Go to this site, and you can download the best and most accurate port of Scorched Earth, and, if you like to waste time at w/o/r/k/ the computer, you can play on-line against either robots, or other people on-line. Written in Java, it should work on any PC with a JAVA port.
