Re:NFS?
Why not just record to NFS share to start with?
I guess some people don't think very far ahead.
"We've got 500G of space on an NFS drive, but we're going to record locally and then move the data..." Good plan.
Assuming CD quality audio (44.1KHz, 16bit, 2chan) you need ~1.4Mbps (T1 speed). I've got some old ISA 10Mbps NICs that won't even blink at that load. Up it to 32 channels and you'll have to fork out $10 for a 100Mbps NIC.
For booting across the network, I use PXES. It's got some quirks, but I'm hoping that more people will join the project and help out. -
Re:Um...Python?
As completely excellent as Python is, it's just a fact that it just doesn't run as fast as C (or even Java or Mono) for nearly any operation.
Have you tried Psyco?
From the website: "Psyco is a Python extension module which can massively speed up the execution of any Python code." -

No VB.NET supportI develop ASP.NET applications using VB.NET, and it's disappointing that the VB.NET development seems to be at a complete standstill. I've been tracking the mbas (Mono Basic) project since the beginning of the Mono project, and there's been virtually no activity on it. It appears to be the work of a single hacker in his non-existant spare time.
Although the official reason that GnomeBasic was dropped was because of "stagnation", the real reason that it died was because Mono was supposed to take it's place.
If that happened, I've seen no evidence of it.
While you can write Mono code in Java, PHP, Logo, Oberon, Pascal, Forth and Lisp, VB is still unavailable.
It's a pity such a popular language appears to be entirely ignored.

Re:Better?
giFT isn't a GUI - it's a p2p network daemon - you run it, it connects to p2p networks, then a seperate client program (I use apollon) presents a GUI, communicating with giftd via unix sockets. Or possibly TCP, not sure. Poisoned is a Mac OS X GUI for giFT.

Re:From the FAQ: Not compatible with Kazaa.
However if it can keep all of my bit torrent downloads in 1 easy to manage window with universal bandwidth management it may be worth it for just that.
You already can. -
Re:Try TermSvc or VNC
Also see UltraVNC. They're making great strides in VNC performance.

giFTgiFT also has a client/server architecture. Try these easy steps:
1) Run giftd.
2) run one of the many clients on many platforms (including web) to attach to the server.
3) ???
4) Profit! -

Game fanaticCheapass Games -- A treasure trove of geek-friendly games. The premise? They provide the idea and enough materials to get you started, you provide the tokens, counters, and dice. The results are great fun at virtually no cost. Highly recommended are The Big Idea and Ben Hvrt.
Another big hit was Four Player Chess, formerly purchaseable at 4playerchess.com but is now managed by a domain-name squatter.
:/ Anyway, mine has always been a big hit amongst the Coffee Shop Crowd. it's not too hard one of your own. Take a normal chess board then add three rows to each side (making the board look like a big Plus sign). Add two sets of Chess pieces (preferably all distinct) and you're off!Steve Jackson Games' Knightmare Chess. It's a card game played while playing chess. Play a card, move a piece. The cards change the rules as you go (e.g. "All Pawns attack forward and move diagnal until this card is banished"). This game in conjunction with Four Player Chess is hours of insane fun. A quick search revealed one for sale elsewhere.
Lunch Money is a sick and masterfully done game of kill-thy-neighbor. Always a big hit amongst those with a ken of violence.
Hot Death UNO. My personal-favorite diversion, an extension of Crazy Eights (UNO), this card game add almost 30 new cards to the game of UNO. For example: Mutual Assured Destruction, Fuck You!, Harvester of Sorrows, The Shitter, Glasnost.... This game is not for the meek and merciful. There's also a PC version here and a Sourceforge project desperately in need of a programmer with mad (motivational) skillz.

Re: false positive reduction
SpamAssassin is a good start. If you're really wanting to reduce false positives, consider bringing
dspam into the mix. "DSPAM presently peaks at 99.985% accuracy, which is ten times more accurate than a human being and is presently being used on implementations as large as 125,000+ mailboxes." bogofilter is another advanced project in the same functional space. -
Re:Logo?
Having used Qbasic prior to logo, I hated logo. It was the most horrible programming experience I have ever had!
Try Python instead:
print 'Hello, World!'
And python can create much more advanced programs easily with it's "Batteries Included" philosiphy.
For a gui designer/ide try Boa Constrcutor.
For creating extension modules check out Pyrex A tip for Pyrex: If you're using windows use the free-of-charge Borland C compiler. -

Try letting her lose on Wiki software. Start on the basics such as triple quotes and wikitables, then work up on harder stuff such as Templates and Variables. There are hundreds of wiki's about, gov wild! The best wiki's around are the Wikimedia wiki's such as Wikipedia,Wikiquote and Wikibooks. You will have fun, plus you will learn stuff other than programming! Also check out the cool round tab trick, a reason for you IE users to upgrade to firefox already!

Javascript Browser Sniffer
A little off-topic, but it may be useful:
If you need to know which browser is your visitor using, I recommend you to use this Javascript Browser Sniffer instead of Mozilla's one. JsBrwSniff is far better: it supports 30 browsers, 14 browsing engines, 25 operating systems, 6 and detects the Flash plugin. It can work on the client-side or on the server-side.
Next version is supposed to find also Adobe SVG plug-in and Adobe Acrobat plug-in.
There's a demo here.

I believe that alpha/beta applications can be "stabilized" by users. See the Stabilizer project for buggy GUI applications: http://stabilizer.sf.net. Perhaps something similar can be done for buggy web sites.

BBBike
There is an interesting project called BBBike (Berlin & Brandenburg Bike) which might be relevant.
It is a system designed (initially) to map the streets of Berlin and surrounds, so as to make traversal of the city more easy for bike riders.
It's written in Perl and there is nothing really to tie it to Berlin. The data could be for any city. It has many features, and allows you to automatically plot a course across the city (conditional on whether you want the scenic route, or better road surfaces, etc.) I think it can even integrate GPS data to plot your course in real time.

Re:Three thoughts
Or you can spend $1000 on getting microphones and $0 dollars for the software.
Believe or it not it is possible to produce decent music cheaply. Equipment is another problem...a good eight track sound card (e.g. Midiman Delta 1010-LT) will run you around $250, more if you want something fancy (e.g. the Midiman Delta 1010 which has the connections in a rack mounted breakout box instead of the back of the computer--much easier to use). The cost of a reasonable workstation has gone down a lot--my Dual AthlonMP 2800+ machine cost around $2000 total (including all of the equipment I got to upgrade my old 500Mhz k6-2 that ended up in this box and my used 24" SGI Monitor).
The microphones are what kills me. I use my live sound stuff to record occasionally. An SM58 will run around $85 for vocals, an SM57 $75 or $80, and a set of drum mics...I have a cheap $140 set of Samson drum mics with a pair of weird overheads I got from a guy for $20 and it sounds OK but in reality they suck. A good set of Shure drum mics (for live sound) would cost around
... $600. Add a second kick drum (grr, stupid Brent) or a fourth tom and you'll add another $200. It's cheaper to buy a cheap drum machine than to get mics for a real drum :)Recording demo quality material is cheap and easy nowadays if everyone in the band has mics for live performances. Recording studio quality stuff is still expensive for a bunch of college kids making subs all day. Sure, maybe the guy with a good tech job and lots of money to waste can do it but the people actually making music all day can't. The important part is that it is a lot cheaper now to maybe record at home and trick your friend in the college music program majoring to be a mastering engineer to master your recordings cheaply and then get some CDs pressed with a small booklet to send to the labels.
There are still labels that accept new music. Even the big five do--InsideOut is an imprint of EMI and carries only progressive rock/metal bands like Symphony X and Transatlantic. Relapse Records consists entirely of Grindcore (well, most people wouldn't think of Grindcore as music...), SPV carries a lot of metal now; everything from Hair to Black to Progressive. Koch records also has quite a few excellent bands (e.g. Opeth).
Lastly, life is not all about records. It is easy to book a tour if you don't care where you will be playing or whom you will be playing with. Hell, I am planning on doing vocals for Recently Vacated Graves on a two week Canadian tour at the end of July. Look at the lyrics...there are a week worth of shows booked so far for three weeks worth of time spent contacting venues. Every band should tour a few times before they release a real record (that's how people get to know who you are when you don't have a huge marketing machine behind you).
The above is based on the experiences of several friends who are in bands which are mildly successful (successful enough to be on tours, one in Europe and to have actually gotten signed to real labels with DIY demos).
P.S. Are you planning on going to a show on the Dream Theater and Yes tour? I'm afraid of how much those tickets will cost.

There are other options
It's important to note that Sveasoft is not the only group out there extending the abilities of these boxes. Linksys/CISCO releasing the code has allowed many groups a crack at modifying these systems to their hearts content.
Wifi-Box is incredably stable, and offers many options, taht are also being extended.
OpenWRT aims to be very light, but allow you to add packages to customize anyway you want.
More info on the router can be found at Seattle Wireless. -
Re:MS is ahead of Open Source on encryption
- Loop-back encryption is kinda clunky. dm-crypt looks to be a cleaner way to do encrypted devices. And pam_mount can mount encrypted home directories on login.
- As for doing encryption in the filsystem, several people are at working at it.
- Your notion that OpenSSH only creates a tunnel while the "console" is open, is little more than FUD. Oh no! The console!. That's the whole point. SSH is largely interactive by its very nature.
- It's quite easy to setup OpenSSL in inetd mode for SSL'd services.
- Encrypted executables? Are you joking? WTF would that achieve? If someone has physical access to your machine, you're screwed anyway. And if someone has broken into your machine remotely then your executables are probably the last thing to worry about. On Unix/Linux systems you need root access to write to system executables. If an intruder has root access, they can do anything and don't need to modify your executable to screw around. This is a straw-man argument.
- Linux is very good as a VPN router. Not only do we have IPsec/IPV6 from the KAME project, there's also the (abandoned) FreeS/WAN project and the spin-off Openswan. But don't forget OpenVPN (available for quite a few platforms, not just Unix/Linux). If you're really desperate, you can always combine SSH and PPP to make a VPN.
- Tokens? You have heard of Kerberos haven't you?
BTW, here's a good LDAPv3+SASL+KerberosV HowTo
My god you are a troll. Oh, and as others have pointed out, encryption does not instantly make something secure.

Re:I purchased 21 CDs last month
I encourage you to try out iRATE radio. It lets you (legally!) download music. If you like it, you can buy it from the band. Get the best of all worlds: legal downloads, experience music you haven't heard of before, and avoid the RIAA fairly easily.
(Disclosure: I am a developer for this, it also needs more work (like most things), so if anyone feels like helping out with a bit of Java coding/UI design/..., come along)
