Re:ICANN can go fuck themselves
They made a terrible, terrible decision with selling gTLDs
They made a terrible decision selling and TLDs! Having ".com,
.org, .net" etc didn't add anything of value; it just added confusion. This website should be
https://slashdot/Google should be
https://google/Microsoft should be
https://microsoft/- simpler, easier, and less confusion with other sites. I'm not saying that "." shouldn't be allowed but it should be treated no different to any other character in the URL. The different TLD just made it easier for website squatters to have more places to squat.

Re:Same way Twitter did
That's a bogus argument. You could achieve the same thing by saying "Vist us at http://slashdot/", or "On the web at 'slashdot'".

Re:Micro$oft Shill
When he talks about posting pattern he probably means all of those accounts, not this single post. Kinda like this.
a) Fresh made account - check
b) "Thoughtful" irst post with same timestamp as the article without subscription to help him - check, already third one for this acc
c) Baseless hate towards Google - check, how baseless is explained in the comments. -

Re:Protect Your Name
That's all well and good. But how? Does any public figure have to register firstnamelastname.TLD for 8 or 9 TLDs? What about Ilastname.TLD? Or just lastname.TLD? lastname-profession.TLD, titlelastname.tld? It's a ridiculous number, all costing a bunch of money.
I know
.xxx was considered a blackmail move by many here - no-one wants a .xxx version of their .com. This all makes me wonder why we still persist with TLDs at all - since .net/.org etc are all redirecting to .com (in most cases) why don't we just drop the system, and have http://slashdot/ be the address? I admit a great deal of ignorance in this area - can someone give a good justification for why we still have them? -
Re:Funny That
That's funny. If I enter in Firefox http://apple/ then the browser puts me to http://apple.com./ Also for http://slashdot/ and for others. Maybe Firefox already knows about the new ICANN stuff?
-
You and me both
Yea I thought this the same as you, but then I realized that these aren't actual domains but supplemental suggestive presumed profiles of the content to be hosted through that reservation.
.COM, .NET, .ORG, .GOV...it's all redundant because all self-governing or quasi-governing organizations are in commerce to host a route to their network for commercial purposes. The entire registry scheme is bogus in that regard, and the country code scheme you and I would originally agree to is actually debased from any relevance because the nature of that directory system impedes the 1st-come 1st-serve independent registries.I would prefer ICANN kicked-out so an independent Torrent-like replacement would replace what ICANN ever could accomplish. I always asked myself why any governing agency would require their ardent domain suffix when it has no logical purpose at the root servers. DNS is nothing more than a turring of a tiered DHCP server. We all should be able to type http://slashdot/ and we arrive here, and instead have domain prefixes that suggest the function of a server to reference like http://org.slashdot/index.html for organizational structure or http://com.slashdot/index.html for commercial pursuits: all determined by the owner of that Slashdot domain.
Obviously ICANN is the reason DNS sucks.

Re:Am I the only one who remembers what I read her
So do it internally. There's no reason slashdot couldn't turn all the URL's on their own page into
a-z 0-9, then add 2 digits, then 3, then 4. That should last you a while.

Re:13 mil for a tld?
Yes, but really, do we even need TLDs at all anymore, if they're going to allow anyone with enough cash to register a TLD, why not just do away with them altogether.
http://slashdot/
http://google/
http://microsoft/
etc.Realistically this would be better than having them register "http://*.google/", "http://*.microsoft/", etc. and would basically achieve the same purpose, TLDs were originally made to keep things organised, clearly they no longer want that.
Of course this would probably cause problems if you have "foo.com" and "foo.org" fighting over "foo"
-
Re:why not?
Why not get rid of TLD's to begin with?
Just http://slashdot/ or http://microsoft/
No mess, no fuzz. -
Re:Pointless
Well, in firefox, http://slashdot/ will look-up on Google (or whatever search engine you set as default) and display the first result. Interesting though, If Google searches trough google.com will display first the website closer to me, while typing it on the adress bar will display the
.com/.net/.etc domain (for example, I'm from romania, .ro, searching with google.com for "convertor" will display convertor.ro first, but typing "convertor" in the adress bar will point to "http://www.xe.com/ucc/", wich is in the 5th place in the first case). -
Re:Pointless
Hmmn, idea forming. If i were to go to http://slashdot/ i should get all the sites registered at slashdot.tld appear as a list, perhaps with a small preview thumbnail/description. That way i could plainly see that http://www.ati.co.uk/ isn't the site i want whereas http://www.ati.com/ must contain a UK section (under
/uk).
I am starting to get to a stage where i'm not sure which TLD i need. With two banks i have online banking facilities. However one has http://www.nationwide.co.uk/ whereas the .com is a US site. The other uses/advertises/redirects to http://www.natwest.com/ (although in this case .co.uk works too). -
Pointless
imho all tld's are pointless. Simeply going to http://slashdot/ or http://games.nintendo/ would be much simpler.
All the different tld's like .com, .net, .org, ... are anyway all registered under the same name by the same person. And if they are not, it just causes confusion or it is used for fooling people.
country-based tld's are only there because of nationalism, every country wanted one...
Now-a-days tld's are nothing more than just a way to make money, hence adding new tld's like .tv and .eu which serve no real purpose whatsoever except for getting everyone to register their domain name before someone else does. Which ofcourse results in... Profit! -
Re:well, he got it wrong again
If the
.org or .co.uk part is essentially arbitrary (I have .org, .com and .net all pointing at the same site just so that someone else doesn't grab them), then wouldn't it make way more sense to just leave it out?
http://slashdot/
http://google/
http://apple/
http://microsoft/
etc.. -

Re:Three Phases
You've forgotten the ever popular
.museum TLD! To protect that, we have to require at least 7 characters. Fortunately, http://slashdot/ still makes it. -
Re:Three Phases
Most likely everyone who already has a
Which is why the whole current scheme of having only a small number of designated top level domains accomplishes nothing. .com, .de, .uk, .fr, .ch, .es, etc. tld will just be covering themselves and redirect to their existing site and have to pick these up to fend off another opportunity for cyber-squatting. Smells almost like some kind of tax. .com doesn't really mean "company," it doesn't mean anything. They should just open it up so we can visit http://slashdot/ -
Further Announcement (Scóre:5, Genuine)
Dear Slashbots
It's only me, fully hetero Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda, main admin 'dude' *high 5!!* at Slashdot.org [slashdort.org] [slashdot.org]: News for Nerds, Stuff that matters. And once more, I'm here to keep you abreast of the work that most of us (excl. Michael) get up to "behind the green curtain" in the backroom of Slashdot. All work to make your browsing experience as hassle free and easy as possible.
Now you may have read recently about radical changes I aim to make to the karma system in my fantastic journal. I said I was thinking of scrapping the whole -1 to +5 karma score system in favour of a vaguely defined alternative. I couldn't give more details then and there, because I was making it up as I go along, but at last I can finally unveil the basics of the new system, the better system to replace karma.
It was while I was recieving a soothing massage from my Shorinji Kempo partner (In case you're interested, it's a type of martial arts that focuses on massage as well as fighting. It's surprisingly good at toning and building muscles - my partner Curt is a particularly muscular and well developed and oiled man.) that I first came up with the idea I'm about to relate.
My aim in all of this would be to take the aggro out of the system. At the moment, people are always whining about this karma loss, or this unfair moderation, or this persons smoking crack, or this person needs more crack that I'm totally sick of the lot of you.
OK, from now on, instead of assigning a bullshit phrase that is poorly understood like "Insightful", Slashdot will let mods say "I don't like this" or "I like this". Simple is good. And so there's no abuse, you will be able to see on each comment who modded you down so you can discuss amicably where or why your post was unlikable.
This is obviously a recipe for good success and cheer! Everyone will be happy to see why they are modded down, and will probably remember next time they post or get mod points who it was who did so. The last thing we want is the status quo, with the vicious backbiting, infighting and stupid cliques.
Anyway, let me know what you think. We really value your feedback. The new system starts next Tuesday though, so make sure your messages are short and to the point. You can feedback in my fantastic journal, as long as you are on my friend list i.e. one of the other admin staff. (Michael, I'll put you back on friend when you put my stapler back. I *bought* that stapler with *my* money.)
Til next Tuesday: Taco out!!
Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda. (Right click and select "Save Image". Then right click on your desktop, and select "properties". In the "background" tab select "browse", find the file and click OK, then "Tile" in the dialog box, then OK again.)
Addendum:
Owing to unforeseen difficulties, we are forced to withdraw our Open Source Slashdot Google Alternative. Sadly, users looking for pages on aardvark were directed to an all to familiar gaping rectal cavity. Ironically the "Arsehole" term was stuffed with URLs of aardvark pictures. Curse you trolls. Is nothing sacred? AND I AM NOT GAY.
P.P.S. Shorinji Kempo IN ACTION!!!
