Discounts
My email provider (Slashmail) has a half-price special today, in honor of Skynet. I guess they figure that they'll only have to provide service for 2 days until Judgment Day.

Re:Still no encryption?I might switch back to yahoo from gmail if they ever allow me to log in encrypted and remain encrypted
Try Slashmail (no relation to
/. btw). It's all https, all the time. But it's all text (no formatting) all the time, too. Boring, but secure.DT

Re:Question?
You get what you pay for. You want ADS and 18-pages of bullshit to agree to in order to get your 1GB of shitty email service? ..Then go get hotmail/yahoo/msn/gmail.
You want great service, AD-free with no storage limits, get an account at http://slashmail.org/. I've been with them for six months now; they present a plain language contract, they don't lie, and their service rocks! -
Re:Too Late
Haha! I caught somebody the other day, that had used our service, saying they had "slashmail'd" someone...

Slashmail
For just webmail, you should check out Slashmail. They have a high level of security, and can host your email domain for just $14/year. It's run by some friends on mine, and they've done a good job of putting it together using Open Source packages. I use it just to offload the spam filtering work to them.

Too expensiveThey're going to have a tough time selling this, especially at that price. Some friends of mine (see my sig below) have been running a low-cost secure webmail/POP/IMAPS service, and even at $14 a year, there aren't as many subscribers as they had hoped.
And Slashmail's offering is better than Microsoft's Outlook Live in many ways:
- Works with Outlook or any standards-compliant program
- No limit on email storage (Outlook Live has a 2 GB limit)
- Better spam filtering (compared to Hotmail)
- No advertisements on webmail pages
- More security features
- Uses Open Source extensively

We can support international signup. We just haven't written the cool, slick interface yet. Leave us a message here and we'll do the manual thing to get you set up.

Slashmail vs Runbox
Slashmail costs money, so it's no direct alternative to ad-based webmail like gmail/hotmail. But how does this Slashmail service compare to Runbox?
http://www.runbox.com/
Can I use Slashmail with a POP client like Eudora to retrieve my messages without logging in to the webmail account itself? Or will I have to use this IMAP thing?
Slashmail is 13.95$ a year, while Runbox is 29.95$ (or 20$ yearly for 3 years). Both offer 30 days free trial.

Re:Encryption
Actually, Slashmail.org has spam and virus filtering as well. And it costs half as much.

Re:Alternative to GMAIL ^ he owns it !
Yep, I'm part owner. And we are pumping our product, just like gmail/yahoo/hotmail/msn. And yes, it is not a 'free' service as in 'no payment'. However, it is indeed free of advertising, storage limits, viruses, heavy graphics, and we make our very best attempt to make it free of spam (using anti-spam software you can control). We realize we aren't going to get rich from $13.95 per year, but it's cheaper than the competition when you compare features and their upgraded service at $20 and higher per year. Best of all, we use and support opensource.

Re:Greylisting worked for my company
We're using DSPAM on our Open Source email servrice slashmail.org and we routinely acheive spam filtering effectiveness in the 95%+ percentile. We expect it to get better over time.

Re:Please tell me
If you want more space for your imap folders, consider switching to slashmail.org for your email service. They use IMAPS for remote access and are completely open source powered.

Sounds expensive
Why would I want to spend $10/month and have to run it myself, when for less than $20/year I can have someone else do all the work for me? Since the article seems to be a case of free advertising, I'll point out that Slashmail will host your email for $13.95 a year. They allow unlimited email storage space, spam and virus filters, and secure access via various means (HTTPS webmail, IMAPS). Oh, and they use all Open Source.

Re:Unlimited!Of course, OSDN isn't giving them away, but they are also giving add-free access for $14/year.
Slashmail has nothing to do with Slashdot or OSTG.

Re:Unlimited!
Now I'm just waiting for the next company to offer true unlimited servce
Uhh... You've come to the right place
Of course, OSDN isn't giving them away, but they are also giving add-free access for $14/year.
