Re:Sue
It is not stated in the EULA that this rootkit will be installed, plus there's no way to uninstall it through add.remove programs.
You can contact Sony directly and they will send you tools to remove the DRM software.
The F-Secure blog talks a little about this. It appears their removal software installs ActiveX controls.. just really messed up. -
yes, but is it Mac compatible?
Apparently this rootkit does not run on Mac OSX. Yet another example of the vast library of software available only to Windows users.
:-(
Look at Sony's FAQ,
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/faq.html#listeni ng
The protected CD looses all features and appears as a normal CD on a Macintosh. This really sucks!
Im switching to Windows! -
Re:My question:You can find more info about the root kit from F-Secures page: http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/xcp_drm.sh
t ml and a link to Sony to ask for tools to remove their DRM: http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/form8.html--

Huge loss of Quality using their method
From the Sony site:
What is the bit rate that the audio files I move to my computer are encoded in?
Windows Media Audio (WMA): 128 kbps
ATRAC3: 132 kbps
128Kbs (WMA) / 320Kbs (Real CD) == 40%
So let's see. I buy a CD and not only do I have to go through a 3 step process, but I get music with less than 40% of the value I payed for (as it's already one through one lossy compression). Thanks for the new format Sony. -

Re:I don't see a problemHmmm, DRM CD's are not CD's.
.. but it says, thusly...
3. My CD player will not recognize this disc.
This disc contains both an audio session and a data session for computers which makes it a multi-session disc. These discs are fully compliant with the Sony/Philips CD disc specifications. If your player will not recognize the disc please check whether your player recognizes multi-session discs in general. ... ?

/my money says the disc does not fully support cdda redbook, but still... -
Incorrect
The linked website does not provide information on how to work around the technology. It explains how to 'work with' the DRM software. This page on the website mentions the problem of playing their DRMed music on an iPod and directs you to this form that you are required to fill out to apparently be emailed instructions.

Blaming Apple
Interestingly SonyBMG is blaming Apple for the lack of support.
I think this situation is bound to happen, when your right hand doesn't know what your left hand is doing. -
SONY Gives the same info for XCP
My girlfriend recently purchased a Sony BMG CD with XCP protection on it.
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/faq.html/
If you click through, you can fill out a form to receive an email giving basically the same instructions as A. and C.
XCP CDs do not carry the "CD" logo as they are definitely not the standard.
XCP is a very nasty little thing, and I seriously suggest everyone to check thier CDs before they purchase them, and boycott XCP albums. -
Sony makes money off iPod players
40 GB of Memory Stick Duos is over $10K... no thanks, I'll spend $400-$500 on an iPod first.
Even if you buy the iPod player instead of the Memory Stick media, Sony still makes its money. 40 GB can hold what, 800 CDs? How many of those are from Columbia Records or one of Sony's other labels?
