  1. Leap Year on Anyone Besides Zune Owners With New Year's Crashes? · · Score: 1

    The only special thing about 2008 I know of is that it is a leap year. That was the cause of the Zune problem. Could be the cause of other problems also.

    Speaking of coincidences, many people said of the Z2K9 problem that it was a merely a coincidence that it happened on New Years and on a leap year--but they were wrong. One of an item (Zune, server, etc.) crashing at New Years is probably coincidence. Several probably is systemic.

    Why not just deduct the rebate at the cash register?

    One reason I can think of is that it is the best way to limit the number of discounts per person. Otherwise, a person could go through the line many times or go to different stores. I think a lot of "Free After Rebate" promotions are to get a certain number of units of a product out there. The manufacturer of the product wants to get these "promotional" items to as many people as possible, not just a few to get a lot each.

    The old reason of "slippage", not having to pay all the rebates, would be much less significant for this new method.

    BTW, Rite-Aid does this know. Just enter the receipt number at the website and it finds all the rebate products on the receipt.

    Incidentally, if you don't think it is fair, or a good deal, then don't buy it. Don't try to make illegal just because you don't like it.

  7. Newton has the key to this on Using Gravity To Tow Asteroids · · Score: 1
    The key to it all is:

    F = ma

    There is a certain force acceleration needed to move the asteroid. That multiplied by the mass of the asteroid gives the force needed. It doesn't matter whether the force comes from a thruster, gravity or a long rope hooked to earth. Multiple the force by the time needed to get the total energy needed.

    Appling the force with gravity uses

    f = (G * m1 * m2) / d^2

    The force needed is determined by the orbit of the asteroid and Earth and the time available--it can't be changed. The mass of the asteroid is constant and it is unlikely that G will change. That leaves the mass of the spaceship and distance between the objects as variables. You can send a less massive spaceship if you keep it closer to the asteroid.

    Note that you must keep the spaceship at a constant distance from the asteroid. If you fire the thrusters too fast, the spaceship moves away and the force is reduced. If you fire them too slow, the spaceship crashes. As the equation shows, you need just enough force to counteract the asteroid's gravity on the spaceship. A less massive spaceship would need a higher thrust because it was closer to the planet--the same as saying that the closer the spaceship is to the asteroid, the more force it can apply.

    In the end, this is the same as putting a thruster on the planet. The only difference is that a thruster on the planet would rotate and so not be usable at all times. Also there are probably differences in the efficiency of the methods.

    Another good reason to stay awake in Physics class. That lecture on Newton's laws just might same your life!

    Disclaimer: I wrote this off the top of my head. Before sending an actual spacecraft, I suggest you double check my physics. If you don't and there is a problem, I won't be held liable for any damages caused by the extinction of life as we know it.

    The title is not misleading. I was careful not to say that the EFF was defending a child pronographer, a pedophile or even the right to keep child porn. My title, "EFF defends right to keep child porn private", is correct because the EFF is defending the right to keep information private and in this case the information is child porn. I did not detail the conditions under which the EFF thinks the information should be kept private, but that was stated in the original article and titles have a length limit.
