Great example of how lua can extend the functionality of a program. Check out the Nmap Scripting Engine.

With lua and NSE, nmap can now do things like vulnerability testing. Why not download nmap now and give it a try?

Dude, until I can click on setup.exe, and it just works, and then there is an "Unistall Program" menu in the program folder on the program menu... I just don't have the time. I've used all 5 methods, and they are great for server management, but for general desktop use, people need click and run. Maybe CNR will take off.

You wanna hear something strange? Firefox is my default browser, so in IE7b3, when I click on a bookmark or enter a URL into the address bar, IE7 actualy calls Firefox to retrieve the page. Bizarre!!!

I recommend giving the IRC servers you have now a try, but use Gaim to access them. It works very well and is very familiar to most users who use other IM clients at home.

My girlfriend recently purchased a Sony BMG CD with XCP protection on it.

If you click through, you can fill out a form to receive an email giving basically the same instructions as A. and C.

XCP CDs do not carry the "CD" logo as they are definitely not the standard.

XCP is a very nasty little thing, and I seriously suggest everyone to check thier CDs before they purchase them, and boycott XCP albums.

  18. What library does this guy go to? on The Distributed Library Project · · Score: 5, Insightful

Libraries and other non-profit organizations are generally the source of the few community gatherings in any town. From chess clubs to book clubs, summer reading programs to adult discussion groups, the libraries in my communities have always served as a strong foundation for social interaction.

While this concept sounds neat, and can probably serve a certain audience, if you wish your local library was more active, volunteer some time and get involved.

  19. I wonder what drives the Japanese? on Japanese Robot on Diplomatic Tour · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is very interesting considering this recent article on Japan's new 30-year robot plan.

I've always wondered why the Japanese are so driven towards technology, and especially robots, so much more that most western cultures. Westerners tend to buy more traditional technological products, and those products we buy tend to have a slow progression in form and function.

This just doesn't seem to be the case in Japan, and I wish I knew why. Unfortunantely I haven't yet been able to visit Japan or become more accustomed with their culture.

Would any /.'ers like to answer this one?

  20. Sure they do on Verizon Rolling Out Nextel-Like PTT Service · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why do you think Verizon is picking up this feature? Because companies are leaving their current cellular provider for Nextel just for PTT.

It comes in particularly handy when businesses and oranizations have employees off-site. Everything from delivery to maintenance, sales to construction. It is a very valuable feature for both convenience and saving money.

Bottom Line: People will leave Verizon for Nextel, and they don't want to lose market-share.

  22. Animatrix answers on The Computational Requirements for the Matrix · · Score: 1

The Animatrix shows that the Robots are truly intelligent and emotional, that they wish to make peace with the humans. The robots had no taste for genocide, so enslavement was safer. I think the robots felt that they were saving the humans from destroying themselves. The Matrix killed two birds with one stone, it kept humanity from ruining everything, and offered a fuel source. I think the architects comment about levels of existence the robots would be satisfied with, hints that the robots use other powers sources. Also if Zion is another Matrix used to fool the intuitive humans because it is closer to reality, it in no way has to be reality. It may turn out that the robots live on a green earth with solar power, and keep the humans enslaved to protect them. Just some ideas.

  23. Animatrix and insertion into the first Matrix on The Computational Requirements for the Matrix · · Score: 1

I believe in one of the Second Renaissance parts, the scene where the robot is sitting as the chairman of the UN and requests human flesh, the Human nations sign away their rights and willingly commit themselves to the first Matrix.

Sorry I'm not more descriptive, but I don't have the DVD on hand to recheck.

  24. Security is not an impossibility on Remote Direct Memory Access Over IP · · Score: 2, Interesting

Security does not mean 100% exploit-proof, it means it secures your information/services given certain desired lengths of protection and certain operating conditions.

While M$ is probably not going to get this one right, it doesn't mean that someone can't. This *is* a desirable feature for some applications, and it is possible to make a secure environment (where secure is defined for the application), and make it seamless as well. That is the whole goal of network security professionals.

If anything, the fact that people already know what kinds of "old" exploits this may be vulnerable to, it means that we are already headed in the right direction.
