I'll declare interest, I work on an open source, mutual social credit system: https://sourceforge.net/projec... so I'm not neutral. But microfinance usually has high interest rates and is 'owned' by large aid organisations that have their private agendas.

Debt money is created by private institutions from thin air and 'ought' either to be based on existing deposits [full reserve banking which would 'slow' everything, not a bad thing] or money creation should be in the hands and governed by the 'users'. So I don't believe that microfinance is the 'answer' and can't find evidence either.

The Pale Moon browser is a better version of Firefox. Pale Moon appears to have better management than the Mozilla Foundation gives Firefox.

Here are some of the advantages:

1) Pale Moon has a 64-bit version. Firefox doesn't. The 64-bit Pale Moon uses the Firefox add-ons; there are no problems except with some unusual add-ons.

2) The "Find in page" is better in Pale Moon. In Firefox the "Find in page" field is on the left of the screen and the "Highlight All" and "Match Case" buttons are on the right. In Pale Moon they are together so that you immediately see if something is chosen from a former search.

3) Pale Moon has backup software. Firefox has only Mozbackup, which works well, but isn't Mozilla Foundation software.

4) Pale Moon is said to be more stable than Firefox. The memory-hogging flaws in Firefox are so widely acknowledged that there are add-ons for re-starting Firefox: Firefox Re-start Add-ons. I use Restartless Restart.

5) Pale Moon is completely independent of the forces that guide Firefox. Pale Moon is in no way associated with Mozilla Foundation. The Mozilla Foundation seems to feel forced to change Firefox in ways most users don't want.

Most of the better "frameworks" out there come with their own proxy objects for multidemensional arrays (like http://libmesh.sourceforge.net... )

Multidmensional arrays haven't been an issue (especially in C++) for quite a long time...

Firstly... 10^-15 is WAY beyond what most scientific codes care about. Most nonlinear finite-element codes generally shoot for convergence tolerances between 1e-5 and 1e-8. Most of the problems are just too hard (read: incredibly nonlinear) to solve to anything beyond that. Further, 1e-8 is generally WAY beyond the physical engineering parameters for the problem. Beyond that level we either can't measure the inputs, have uncertainty about material properties, can't perfectly represent the geometry, have discretization error etc., etc. Who cares if you can reproduce the exact same numbers down to 1e-15 when your inputs have uncertainty above 1e-3??

Secondly... lots of the best computational scientists in the world would disagree:

Homemade VHS quality is not great to begin with, I used a new (old but in the box) VCR and an EasyCap (a clone i think). It worked fine. There was no noticeable degradation of quality. The mpeg was about 20GB for a two hour tape. The software i used was Virtual VCR

To be honest, i think a lot of these best practices are voodoo (it entirely depends on how and when it was recorded), just to jack up the price. As for not wanting to risk a tape on an old player, just test it out on a junk tape first, if it works 10 times in a row, chances are it'll work the 11th time.

not really - what you need is to pick a few libraries and pull them in. Unlike other languages where you use what comes with your IDE, with C/C++ you are encouraged to find and use reusable libraries.

So if you want XML, get tinyXML and use that. If you want http - boost::asio or curl. Web Services (REST or SOAP?) gsoap or boost::asio or civetweb/mongoose, and so on.

This is a huge advantage. If I want an embedded webserver in my code then I'll include civetweb in it and with 4 lines of code and 2 c files, I have my code answering http requests. It will be limited in functionality, but that's ok as my embedded server only has 40k added to it by doing this. If I want something much more featured, I'll use a different server library.

If I want JSON, I'll go grab a JSON library, good luck using JSON in your that didn't see fit to include a parser for it. I would like to see boost wrappers/reimplementations of many common libraries like XML or SQL, but ... maybe one day I'll have a go at contributing one.

The only disadvantage to this is finding which library is the most suitable for you.

I use this: Freeplane

It's not the right tool for long verbose text, but for collecting ideas and arranging them together it works well. I tend to think of it as a free-form web page. A few key things:
- It is portable, at least I run mine off a USB flash drive. This is a key feature, if it were not so then it wouldn't get used. It's not "cloud" but then I think of this as being better than a cloud version, as it does not require network, and you don't have to worry about cloud security.
- It can support links to other files (local on the drive) or web links to external sites. This ability to organize an amorphous collection of things (text, local links, remote links, images) is what makes it a good idea tool.
- It can collapse/expand parts of the map so you can focus on topic at hand. Just make sure to enable the setting that saves the state of the map (for some reason IIRC it defaults to everything collapsed when the map is first opened).

Once you setup a couple keybindings, and get the hang of creating and linking new nodes it becomes a pretty fast tool to work in also.

I have used OneNote for years, but take a look at Freemind
I like using it specifically when laying out a working outline for a theme paper, a programming problem, etc.

It allows Visual / Org-chart and outline display of notes. not just tabs. Easy to re-arrange and show different ways. Import and Export to HTML & XML. Superneato.

You cannot assume that.You don't know how long this vulnerability has been exploited, and it is reasonable to expect that some high-profile targets that use OpenBSD in their stack may have been compromised.

Netcraft reports BSDs as 1% or less of the servers out there, OpenBSD being a fraction of that, FreeBSD being another, NetBSD and other such probably being a smaller fraction than either. I would expect OpenBSD to be the bigger fraction--who uses BSD on a server?--but FreeBSD appears to be more popular as a desktop OS, and that may carry weight. Of course we're talking about the tastes of the 1% so who really knows?

Thing is we know a lot of high-profile targets are straight Linux or they have dedicated appliances that were vulnerable (FortiNet products, SonicWall products, Cisco and Juniper gear even). When making conjectures, I take the larger probabilities--look up Operational Risk Management and related analytical techniques--and draw likely conclusions. "OpenBSD isn't vulnerable" would not have convinced me (or likely anyone) that the situation is any different from a practical standpoint, except that a few machines somewhere would theoretically escape vulnerability, and even then you may be able to modify the attack (i.e. take less than 4k?).

The problem is, on top of the fact that no boundary check was performed on a copy operation, this passed a code review and was incorporated in the most widely used SSL library, that reads and process sensitive information.

Yes I've said this a few times about "better coding practices". Cleaner code would have helped, heartbleed was very self-contained, the process of review and clean code *may* have increased the likelihood of Heartbleed not making it past a review, but it did make it past several manual reviews as-is, etc etc. Part of my larger argument has been that Heartbleed isn't exposed by technical runtime countermeasures until exploited, and apparently nobody thought to look for this particular kind of bug, so it was never tested.

That actually sounds interesting. What happened to it?

Well besides that I am not the world's best programmer--I do have a certain strength in the area, but it's vastly outweighed by my weakness in larger architecture and I always had this perfectionist thing going on with no real code discipline so I was always frustrated with my own bad code--I could never get the allocator tested. You do understand why it might be hard to test a memory allocator as it's incrementally written, right?

The basic plan was to implement parts of malloc(), and fall back to glibc's malloc() for cases I don't handle. I used a staged design, with arbitrary object sizes based on some research papers I read--16 byte objects are common, so I have a "picoheap" or whatever I called it that's just a collection of mmap() areas for holding 16 byte objects. For larger (128 byte-256 byte?) objects I had separate mmap() areas which used canaries to detect write overflow (too much overhead to do that with 16 byte allocations, just made them 4k pages with a bitmap). And so on. I tried to implement one class of allocation, and fallback to malloc() otherwise... and the interposing wasn't something I knew how to do.

I'm sure Peter Gutmann would have something to say about me replacing malloc() with something much better I invented one morning over coffee (and the Web site part is now defunct... I still have the design docs somewhere, probably the schizophrenic rantings of a child).

Eg. acessing odd memory positions is a stall in most modern CISC cpu's (and some ancient ones too), so your code will actually run slower. In some cpu's, the stall is everything that is not 16-byte aligned.

PC-WELT FEB 1998 - page 84, again, my work is featured there

WINDOWS MAGAZINE, WINTER 1998 - page 92, insert section, MUST HAVE WARES, my work is again, there

PC-WELT FEB 1999 - page 83, again, my work is featured there

CHIP Magazine 7/99 - page 100, my work is there

GERMAN PC BOOK, Data Becker publisher "PC Aufrusten und Repairen" 2000, where my work is contained in it

HOT SHAREWARE Numero 46 issue, pg. 54 (PC ware mag from Spain), 2001 my work is there, first one featured, yet again!

Also, a British PC Mag in 2002 for many utilities I wrote, saw it @ BORDERS BOOKS but didn't buy it... by that point, I had moved onto other areas in this field besides coding only...

Being paid for an article that made me money over @ PCPitstop in 2008 for writing up a guide that has people showing NO VIRUSES/SPYWARES & other screwups, via following its point, such as THRONKA sees here -> http://www.xtremepccentral.com...

It's also been myself helping out the folks at the UltraDefrag64 project (a 64-bit defragger for Windows), in showing them code for how to do Process Priority Control @ the GUI usermode/ring 3/rpl 3 level in their program (good one too), & being credited for it by their lead dev & his team... see here -> http://ultradefrag.sourceforge... or here http://sourceforge.net/tracker...

I was about to say something nice about the Android port of Frodo and how great it was that the developer must have finally figured out how to swap disks without entering 'LOAD"*",8,1' and had a keyboard that looked even vaguely like the original but...

No. Never mind. It's still nice to have but bordering on unusable for anything complex.

Gamebase64 has everything you never needed to know about C64 games, Girls of '64 for everything in 8-bit nudity, and AppsnToolsBase64 for everything in utilities, business and productivity applications.

All c64 programs are tiny in modern terms; an uncompressed 1541 floppy disk image is only 170k. So you can carry every significant Commodore 64 program that was every released on a single flash drive or on your phone, and have plenty of room to spare.
