C|Net is publishing a story about a Stanford University Senior who reversed-engineered the Napster server protocol. The story also mentions a Web page in SourceForge which gives links to various Napster clients for different OS's. I wonder how many new Napster servers clones we'll have soon.

Everything is and will be Open Source and the initial focus will be on improving existing Open Source printing software and enabling advanced functionality for Laserjets. It's all being developed and managed through SourceForge." While this is all LaserJet specific, I can't help but think that open sourcing everything will enable the community to build stronger cross-platform printing solutions for Linux.

Specifically, it will be available under the Artistic License and coordinated through SourceForge. A little snoop-work will lead you to the project's page. Yummy. "

A reader wrote in with the news that IceWMIceWM has announced that they are now 1.0.0. IceWM is a window manager that strives to be simple, according to the web site, while also being fully usable in default config. It's fully Gnome compliant, and partially KDE compliant.

Anonymous Coward writes "In a letter, the author of a Gnome-based Napster clone was pressured to remove distribution of the program due to the fear that source availability would make the Napster servers less secure [if] gnap is not ceased." UPDATE by RM: Ryan Dahl, gnap author, has spoken with Napster, says they've come to a happy understanding, and has removed the "letter from Napster" (and his response to it) from his page. He also tells us that he and Napster are working together on an article for tomorrow, which we eagerly await.
