Re:The best thing about Perl
Documentation is far and away the thing that sets Perl apart from other languages. There are some bad things you can say about Perl's documentation, but most of them are criticisms that you can't even begin to make of other programming languages because they simply aren't in the same ballpark.
are you kidding? have you not seen Javadoc? it does precisely what you describe... and with XDoclet, you can do full-blown code generation right from your documentation, which is conveniently embedded right in your source.I blame POD for this

My solution: 1 Hauppauge 350 + 1 pcHDTV card
I use an HDTV tuner card for off-the-air HDTV, and a Hauppauge 350 card (in the same computer) for cable/analog TV.
It is a little tricky getting the drivers to live together, but I found a handy howto on getting it done (sorry, I don't have the link handy, but check out the mythtv forums, pcHDTV forums, and ivtv driver lists for details.
Far easier, if you have more than one computer, is to have your HDTV tuner card in one and your hauppauge card in a second. Mythtv allows you to use one seamless interface for multiple backend recorders, giving you the best of all possible worlds with a lot less manual hacking than is required if you try to combine all of the hardware into one box (this was ultimately my preferred solution, though you CAN make the hardware all work together with a little blood and sweat).
It is a bit of work getting all of this working seamlessly, but having control of your own hardware (rather than giving such control to the MPAA or another third party) makes it well worth the time. -
Don't forget PHP Ming
Ming is an open source extension to PHP which can do most that Flash can and works on Linux already. see http://ming.sourceforge.net/

Neverwinter Nights
I agree that the Mac version of Neverwinter Nights came out late, the expansion packs aren't officially for the Mac yet, and I'm sorry that you're having trouble getting a copy locally.
In the US, the Mac version is $45 vs. $30 for the PC version. Copies are fairly easy to get from most outlets that carry Mac stuff (CompUSA, Apple Stores, online at MacMall, MacZone, Amazon, etc).
The OpenKnights project has an auto-updater for the Mac version which also will auto-magically install the PC versions of the expansion packs for you.

Re:Linux voids finally being filled...
You might want to try out Quanta. It's been making great strides recently, and its visual (WYSIWYG-ish) layer looks like it will be the best thing since sliced bread. In any case, it is one of the programs with the most devoted following in linux-land.

Re:M-Systems Disk On Chip in there?
Microsoft would likely be doing this because of the inability of hackers to easily replace the contents of a DOC with their own personal OS image, be it Linux or NetBSD.
Actually, I'd say it's to prevent people from putting their own 160G hard drives in and downloading game images to it. The XBox (not surprisingly) proved to be one of the easiest consoles to mod. There's even a purely software-based way to do it. Those who know this have approximately 2 legitimate copies of games (Halo and MechAssault), and about 30 illegitimate images sitting on their hard drives. A non-standard storage medium would make this kind of thing all that much harder. -

Flash For Linux alread OSS
The F4L project (at sourceforge) is already working on an open source alternative to Macromedia's monopoly. The GUI is already in place in version
.01, and there are already libraries in the wild for editing .SWF files (based on information released by Macromedia), so it is only a matter of developer time before it is finished. I run the F4L Documentation Project. You can chat about F4L at irc.freenode.net and #F4L -
Re:Read/Write Support for NTFS?
The Captive is working very nice for me, thoug a bit cpu intensive and slow but otherwise working perfect for my Mandrake 9.2 and the install was easy. here is the discription from the website:
"Project implements the first full read/write free access to NTFS disk drives. You can mount your Microsoft Windows NT, 200x or XP partition as a transparently accessible volume for your GNU/Linux.
The NTFS driver that comes with any Linux 2.6 gives very good reading performance, but the write support is not usefull.
This compatibility was achieved in the Wine way by using the original Microsoft Windows ntfs.sys driver. It emulates the required subsystems of the Microsoft Windows kernel by reusing one of the original ntoskrnl.exe, ReactOS parts, or this project's own reimplementations, on a case by case basis. Project includes the first open source MS-Windows kernel API for Free operating systems. Involvement of the original driver files was chosen to achieve the best and unprecedented filesystem compatibility and safety."This boils down to two options for the user:
- 1. Slow but perfect R/W acces with Captive.
- 2. Fast read(almost)only acces with the buildin NTFS-driver in the 2.6.x kernel.

Re:What about Sylpheed?
Another kewl thing about sylpheed is that you can use it easy-peasily with authentication, tls etc.
And you can use it easy-peasily with hotway and hotsmtp (these make it possible to talk POP and SMTP with your hotmail account - ie make your hotmail account act like a normal mail account). -

Response time for AV vendors
After viewing this thread I noticed that Clam AV came up quite a bit. So I went to their website and went to the news section. From there I saw a link for PC worlds response times articles. Here is the original article in german. Clam AV is #5, but the AV program I use frequently is BitDefender, which is ranked #2. I use BitDefender because they have a LiveCD that is a remastered version of Knoppix which is a Live CD based off of Debian Linux. BitDefenders scan engine can also scan Microsoft Windows partitions (to include FULL RW support for NTFS). The only thing missing from my recovery pack is a spyware scanner that runs under linux and will remove windows based spyware. ~ryan

Re:Here's Mine
There's a typo in the link, here's the right one.

Here's MineSince this thread is so quiet, I'll go ahead and add one.
Unattended is a system for installing Windows and apps hands-off. Great use of Perl and BATch files to do something useful. Kind of a PITA to set up, but once going, it's well worth the time investment.

Re:Multi-Platform Solution Required
It uses H323 so it's compatible with a lot of stuff. I use GnomeMeeting to chat to Windows users and OS X users. OpenPhone and NetMeeting for Windows, OhPhoneX for OS X.
Also I believe GnomeMeeting is now (just about) usable on OS X with Fink.

Re:Secure sockets aren't exactly transparent
The future of P2P clearly involves strong encryption, and is also likely to employ some "invite-only" attributes. That future software is here today; all that is lacking is the user base.
Yup. Like Waste. Although it is lacking in many ways and needs more development, it's open source so many things are possible. -

I think they're confusing it with GNaughty.

Re:Works in the lab, never in reality.
And what about those open source and non-American filesharing programs? Are these folks going to be ecstatic to add this wonderful DRM type technology to their programs? I really doubt it...

Here ya go
I'm designing something similar for my truck.
Inexpensive Free software for Win or Mac. Inexpensive cable.
Expensive. Very pro display, and you can get all the extended codes sets.
Opensource(you still need to build/buy the cable)
There are others out there. Google for obdii
All you need do is hook this up to the serial port of whatever car PC you make, and run the s/w. Presto, virtual dashboard, with more readings than you will ever use.
Friend of mine at work has the cheaper one, and it works quite well. You can even record a drive, and play it back later. Output to OO.org or excel compatible csv for further analysis. -
Re:ClamAV vs. Commercial
It's true. We've been using a combination of MailScanner, Spamassassin, and ClamAV on ours and a number of customer mailservers for a little over a year now. Don't seem to remember any viruses getting through, and many times Clam has an update before the commercial vendors. It's also got _great_ support through the mailing list(s). I would recommend ClamAV wholeheartedly.
-
dashpc.com
It's been seen on here a few times, but it's currently the best linux-based open-source car computer website. It has OBDII compatibility via a FreeDiag driver. The software has been slow in development, but lately things have been picking up quite nicely.
http://www.dashpc.com has all the juicy details about how to build your own DashboardPC and how to interface with your car via your PC.
-
freediag
Your ECU has most of the info you want. Pull it with FreeDiag and output it to the display of your liking.
Make something neat so I can use it too. Your car needs to be OBDII compliant to use it, most (all?) recent cars are.

Have you actually tried
a. Google
b. SourceForge
c. neither
And the correct answer is c.
While a. or b. would be even correcter!
freediag that I have found on sourceforge which I have googled with "open source obdii".

PocketWarrior
Wow...sure is quiet in this post. I'd figure this one would be a fun one that I could look and find some cool new programs to try out. Guess I should've known better. (I'm not new here)
Anyways...
I like PocketWarrior but it saddens me that it will not currently work with my Dell Axim X3i and the built in Wi-Fi. Otherwise, I'd be having a lot more fun with my little PPC. -
ClamAV
The ClamAV client is great for scanning email, but it is best used with another scan engine, such as amavis-ng.
I own a company that uses the ClamAV+Amavis-ng configuration internally and implements the solution for clients. We've never seen a virus come through the system yet.
When you combine these tools with SpamAssassin you have a fairlyy "safe" email system. -
Here you go, get to work!GPL SCUMM engine clone
Sam & Max fan-GA, anyone?
Now you just need some good artists, writers and voice actors. (Well, there still is the trivial problem of copyrighted characters...)
