Re:It's somewhat expected.
Apple should learn from Microsoft's mistake of trying to have two rather diverse platforms (Windows and Windows mobile).
The article is mostly nonsense. The two operating systems are already pretty much the same and run on nearly the same codebase. There are just a few differences where it makes sense for there to be a difference between a desktop-oriented operating system and an appliance-oriented operating system.
Now, would it be cool if there was an option to run the appliance interface on a "regular" computer? Maybe, and maybe Apple will give developers a way to bundle an app so one package can run on both iOS and Mac OS. Until then it's trivial to develop an app that easily compiles into both an iOS version and a Mac OS version.
I see that they complain about not having regular expression support in Cocoa, well they must not realize that they are on a POSIX-compliant operating system which includes regex. There are also easily-found frameworks out there which provide an Objective-C regex API.
Anyways, it seems that the article is just a teaser for Ars's paid, premium service. This is probably why they made it so sensationalistic, so they could draw people in to pay $5 a month for their site:
(If you'd like to read what these developers had to say about recommended resources for Mac OS X developers, thoughts on Macs for scientific computing, benefits of RAD languages and tools, adopting new developer tools in Snow Leopard and iOS 4, and more, the full transcript of the live chat--jokes and all--is still available to all Ars Premier subscribers.)

As a Linux user
As a Linux user I can sum up my choice of browser in the following way:
Opera: Excellent browser. Has the best set of features of any browser out-of-the-box, almost no rendering issues and it's fast. Unfortunately it can't be patched, updated and packaged as easily as other free software browsers. It's closed nature also makes it non-portable, limiting me to whatever platforms Opera Software decides to support. It was my browser of choice for a long time but when I started to migrate to pure64 Linux Opera's releases didn't keep up. Ruled out.
Chromium: Also excellent. Unfortunately Google's development model for the browser makes it painful to package and distribute. The bootstrap tarball is a whopping 700MB in size, and after the tarball has been downloaded you have to update it with svn. AFAIK there are no regular release tarballs and shipping a 700MB non-current tarball in the source tree with a strange build system and code that has to be updated before building is out of the question. It would be my browser of choice on Linux if it didn't complicate things so much. I think most Linux distributors agree with a number of these points, which is why we don't see more of them package Chrome(ium). Distributions like Slackware would never, ever carry source code that big (at best you get the pre-built binaries from Google.. again, this affects portability and from what I know it's heavily optimized for x86, probably won't even work on PPC/ARM). Ruled out.
Konqueror: Great browser for the most part, but uncomfortable to use. Has rendering issues (and "flickering" when it draws and loads webpages, forms are sometimes broken etc.) which makes it annoying, plugins don't always work (like flash). And the way bookmarks is implemented isn't as polished as one would hope. KHTML is a good engine but not as good as WebKit, and QT's internal WebKit engine apparently needs work (based on my experience with Rekonq which needs a LOT of polish). Ruled out.
Epiphany: Haven't used the new WebKit-based version because I don't use Gnome (and it's heavily tied to it). Probably what I would recommend and use myself if I didn't prefer KDE as my desktop. Ruled out.
Firefox: The browser I prefer. It isn't the fastest browser but it's fast enough. It's easy to build and the functionality it lacks can be added with extensions. I use it because it's well supported and just works. Fact is, while there are plenty of browsers that can compete with Firefox in terms of features and polish (even exceed it) those aren't the reasons I actually USE firefox. It's might be based on Gtk but isn't tied into Gnome so it's well suited for using on desktops other than Gnome (like Xfce and KDE).
I don't fit the profile of your average Linux user so my reasons for choosing a particular browser is different from the norm, but the fact is that Firefox is good anough and it fits the free software development and distribution platform very well making it easy to support.

Re:You did not RTFA either
because TFA doesn't explain that google wrote it themselves. Heck, even the google blog announcement doesn't explain that google wrote it themselves. Guess what, it turns out google did not write it themselves, they're using libpdf.so which is libpdf
I was referring to the Google blog post, which is linked from the Slashdot summary and thus counts as "TFA".
It says "Currently, we do not support 100% of the advanced PDF features found in Adobe Reader, such as certain types of embedded media" and "We would also like to work with the Adobe Reader team to bring the full PDF feature set to Chrome using the same next generation browser plug-in API", which I took to mean that:
1. it clearly isn't being written by Adobe, and
2. even if Google didn't write it, they are maintaining and improving it, so they "wrote it" in the same sense that Apple "wrote" WebKit.As for the "libpdf.so", part, I assume you're looking at the part of the code that says
#if defined(OS_WIN)
cur = cur.Append(FILE_PATH_LITERAL("pdf.dll"));
#elif defined(OS_MACOSX)
cur = cur.Append(FILE_PATH_LITERAL("PDF.plugin"));
#else // Linux and Chrome OS
cur = cur.Append(FILE_PATH_LITERAL("libpdf.so"));
#endifWhich means that they're using a file called libpdf.so on Linux. As another one of your replies points out, this is doubtful to be the 9-year-old unmaintained incomplete C library you link to, and judging from the Windows and Mac filenames, this is nearly definitely a library written (or at least maintained) by Google.

Re:No more Fireflock. What next?
In fact, the whole patent issue around H.264 is only an issue in a FEW countries (US included). A dutch developer is currently making a Firefox-spin (WildFox, http://wildfox.sourceforge.net/) for the rest of the world. Why should the rest of the world suffer because a few (dominant) countries have a retarded stance on software/specification patents? I also believe that WebM is a Good Thing... but lets face it - there will be lots of disputes whether a certain way of solving things in video encoding/decoding are "too similar" to what is given in specifications for patent-encumbered technologies. This is the whole issue with the patents - they are (intentionally) extremely vague and describe "processes". Copyright is a whole other issue - where it is easy to prove that something is original work.

Re:No HP For Me
I have my Kodak ESP 5250 working very well on Fedora with the CUPS driver on Sourceforge. Just unpacked the file and then installed the printer (as a network printer over wifi) using the standard Printers icon in the control panel (I think it was called CUPS Printer Configuration Utility.) Worked first time.

Re:Parameterized SQL
No, no, no, no, NO. DO NOT use regular expressions to validate context-free languages. The only way to validate SQL using regular expressions is to use Perl-style regular expressions with backreferences, and those are actually pushdown automata. They're also next to impossible to read.
I'll toot my own horn and point out that context-free validation can be done sanely
... though it would be easier for everyone else if I actually had the time to keep up with releases. Dan's asked me to port that project to MySQL, which I'm actually working on right now along with cleaning up some of the dumber design decisions I made five years ago. -

So Many Choices
There are some web sites dedicated to just source code: http://www.codeproject.com/ is a great place to find useful small applications with an explanation. http://sourceforge.net/ has excellent code. http://apache.org/ has very good projects. These sites don't require you to retype anything. While the programs in codeproject are small, some of the projects in source forge and apache are huge -- but many have very good small tutorials to get you up and running. For little hardware projects look at http://www.instructables.com/. Even the commercial products now have incredible online resources that in many ways surpass what we got in Byte, if you're not familiar with http://msdn.microsft.com/ check it out. Another approach is to install Linux, Ubuntu, Fedora, or any distribution comes with a package manager that allows you to browse applications by the thousands. I set one up in my house and my daughter had Tux Racer installed before I got home from work the next day. Computer magazines didn't go away, they were eclipsed. Oh did I mention http://eclipse.org/ its a full IDE, open source and a development environment as well.

vvvP
This is a young program designed to catalog photographs: http://vvvp.sourceforge.net/ Linux, OS X and Windows. It stores everything in a single file so it is easy to backup. It does not store tags in the image itself, but this will be added in future versions.

Try Mapivi
I've been searching for the same feature set, a file centric image manager whose metadata is stored exclusively in the file.
One of the best ones I have found is Mapivi:
http://mapivi.sourceforge.net/mapivi.shtml
I still often use Digikam, but its metadata support is inconsistent at best. On the other hand the front end is more useable than Mapivi.
You should also look at ExifTool, because you can manipulate and query metadata with it on the command line.

If you find a solution, please share!

Re:Put another way
This is really a diversion from the real application: Chrome OS with an advanced integrated Wine implementation.
All the goodness of Linux with a measure of "backwards compatibility" - because that is what general users want.
General users like the idea of Linux, but fear they will have to learn something new (OpenOffice is _so_ much different than MSOffice of course...).
I still remember fondly the Slax "Kill Bill Edition" back from 2005 - it had some wine integration.
The new target for Linux though is OS X, especially for Ubuntu.(see purple theme 10.04).
So what does it take to have a Mac-Wine equivalent? To run all those Mac and Hackintoshed programs?
quick search turned up these possibilitites: (http://www.puredarwin.org/, http://mac-on-linux.sourceforge.net/, http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/) -

Re:Back to Basics
http://www.owasp.org/index.php/SQL_Injection_Prevention_Cheat_Sheet
How many times do we need to say the same thing before people start listening?
Nice cheat sheet but I was a bit surprised to see "* Also Enforce: Least Privilege" listed under "Additional Defenses". Perhaps it is just my opinion but it seems least privilege should be very high on the list as has the potential to negate many application code and query instances where a developer may make a mistake or is simply lax in their methods.
When I had a PHPBB website hit by an SQL Injection attack I not only stopped using PHPBB but I started an open source project with the idea of creating components to be used in the design of a database backed web application that could rely on the least privilege principle at the database engine rather than having absolute faith in the web application code itself to enforce security.
It is not a perfect solution but it has the potential to stop many SQL injection attacks even in cases where the web application has some bad code.

Re:Don't let reality get in the way of your anger
They probably mean the file server will use AFP, which few clients support. However there exist a client FUSE module, so linux & BSD should work OK. Now there are other server bits that Apple provides, such as calendar servers, it could get hairy.

Re:about time
You need to check out rEFIt. Works awesome on the mac, allows you to TRIPLE BOOT, linux, mac os, and windows. very nice interface even.
EFI is a much more customizable system than BIOS ever was.
-
Apple uses EFI in all intel based machines
Apple has been using EFI in its intel based Macs since 2006. The EFI firmware allows the use of emulation modules so that, as an example, Mac EFI has a BIOS emulator allowing Macs to boot into Windows. On Macs the BIOS emulator is not perfect as there is no way you can actually edit or modify it without running the risk of bricking your machine after damaging the firmware, but there is an open source EFI interface for Macs called rEFIt that allows you to boot to a boot menu from where you can boot into Mac, Windows or Linux for example.
Amit Singh has written a book on prgramming the EFI interface on Macs which, for anyone considering getting into EFI programming is a good point to start with. Armed with a second hand Intel Mac Mini from ebay, you could get a head start by the time MSI release their motherboards.

Re:about time
Well, MIPS-based machines like the Broadcom BCM91250E use a BIOS called the Common Firmware Environment (CFE). Sun machines use a BIOS called OpenBOOT. The OpenBIOS pages are a little... old, but still informative about non-PC BIOSes as well as the platform-independent standards and their own open-source replacement.
Let's see. Claim 1 of the GP: The BIOS is where manufacturers lock up the hardware. Well, use OpenBIOS, Coreboot, Intel's Open Source TianoCore or any other replacement for that defective closed-source product you're using. Don't blame BIOSes, blame the implementation. Just because one BIOS developer was high on substances of questionable legality does not make all BIOSes equal.
Implicit Claim of the GP: All BIOSes are One BIOS. There Can Be Only One! Muahahahahaha!
Reality: There's so many fully or partially Open Source BIOSes out there it's not funny. There are plenty of alternative Closed Source BIOSes you can use as drop-in replacements as well. If you don't like the BIOS, don't blame the concept, blame yourself for not replacing it with something you DO like.
(Me? Suffer fools gladly? There may be suffering involved, yes. I'd make a great Grand Inquisitor.)

Re:Sounds good.
I could see this being useful in a NOC setup. the NOC for my job has 12 PC's that run 25 monitors. I helped them out with buy setting upSynergy to cut down on the number of keyboards and mice, but with two of these cards, we could could cut that down to one or two PC's. It would make life for the NOC admin's much easier, not to mention the cost savings on running 10 less PC's.

might be interesting for you as you can run a functioning virtual ethernet network, "plugging" things together etc. the rest of the virtualsquare project is also worth a look.
its not exactly colorful, but it really helps learning about network configurations that you don't have the resources to setup a testbed for.

There's always AROS if you really want all that (and it and MorphOS have enough apps "to be usable on a day to day basis")
But since MorphOS, among few other things, is doing relatively (very relatively, yeah...) fine even with AROS around, perhaps its community doesn't care about those factors all that much (plus...)
As for the speed, and most notably the percieved speed...I wouldn't be so certain. Grab AROS, it's reasonably comparable for our needs (more rough though); there are even some VMs of recent builds always available. And run it on as low amount of processing power as you can get your hands on.

Re:slashvertisement
Apple products are more open source than morphos
Ehhh?
http://morphosambient.sourceforge.net/And FFS, it's not "crippling suspected pirate copies", it's a trial; quite adequate (you can restart, you know...) to determine if you want to get the thing.

Re:Why not just use a Linux distribution?
you could consider AROS to be intel-based although it runs on other architectures

GNS3 & wireshark & NMAP and package genera
As someone working as a Network Engineer I would recommend you look at GNS3 since you can install it via sources or via a deb package, you already have the address in other post in this thread. The nice thing about GNS is that if you build the network and installe the images (that is the trouble part) you need actual cisco images, you might be able to obtain them for educational purposes, and why not approach Cisco to ask. The worst thing you could get is a no on the other hand you might end up with a system that acts as the devices do in real life, an ideal playground in which to learn about networking, but to properly learn get hold of a package generator to stream your simulated environment. http://sourceforge.net/projects/packeth/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/pacgen/ http://bittwist.sourceforge.net/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/traffic/ http://gull.sourceforge.net/ http://mc-mint.sourceforge.net/ Are just some of the available package generators. Also someone else mentioned wireshark http://www.wireshark.org/ - That tool is a must for anyone serious about learning about networking and someone teaching about it. NMAP is another must as well http://nmap.org/ Good luck with your efforts

I failed at searching IKVM's wiki
Searching IKVM's wiki returned 0 results about type-safe, memory-safe, silverlight, or compact (as in
.NET Compact Framework which Silverlight and XNA use). Can IKVM be used to write a Silverlight app in Java, or is it designed only for making apps that run on .NET Framework on a PC? -
"ad-homimen 'LOGIC'" & a question
"Don't be a dick, it's not hard." - by SanityInAnarchy (655584) on Tuesday June 01, @07:52PM (#32425830)
Per my subject above? That's a logical fallacy in & of itself, and you tried to use your "so-called LOGIC" against me?? Please - you're violating one of its major tenets right there, for the what, 20th time or so now, in your near constant name calling & such???
Also - you should go and obtain a Comp. Sci. degree, because if you don't realize that "Open Sores" can work against you? You're really "out of it" man...
(lol, yes, I know - that 'Open Sores' rib of mine "sets you off" hugely - that's your problem, not mine)
However, by the SAME TOKEN, per evidences I have produced?
I am actually OUT THERE:
1.) HELPING OPEN SOURCE PROJECTS (UltraDefrag 64 -> http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultradefrag/forums/forum/709672/topic/3369133 and here also -> http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultradefrag/forums/forum/709672/topic/3690136 )
2.) Writing up security guides that, since 1998 online, actually help others vs. the crackers out there, & that have topped 350,000 views, have been made "essential guides" & are in 15/20 forums its on's "top viewed" posts, and often are rated "5/5 stars" & the like... and even got me PAID over at PCPitstop for writing it up no less (per my lists below as a single example thereof):
3.) And, a LOT MORE, while you were still in diapers in this area I suspect, see below:
"My Name is Ozymandias: King of Kings - Look upon my works, ye mighty, & DESPAIR..."

Windows NT Magazine (now Windows IT Pro) April 1997 "BACK OFFICE PERFORMANCE" issue, page 61

WINDOWS MAGAZINE, 1997, "Top Freeware & Shareware of the Year" issue page 210, #1/first entry in fact (my work is there)
PC-WELT FEB 1998 - page 84, again, my work is featured there
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, WINTER 1998 - page 92, insert section, MUST HAVE WARES, my work is again, there
PC-WELT FEB 1999 - page 83, again, my work is featured there
CHIP Magazine 7/99 - page 100, my work is there
GERMAN PC BOOK, Data Becker publisher "PC Aufrusten und Repairen" 2000, where my work is contained in it
HOT SHAREWARE Numero 46 issue, pg. 54 (PC ware mag from Spain), 2001 my work is there, first one featured, yet again!
Also, a British PC Mag in 2002 for many utilities I wrote, saw it @ BORDERS BOOKS but didn't buy it... by that point, I had moved onto other areas in this field besides coding only...
Lastly, being paid for an article that made me money over @ PCPitstop in 2008 for writing up a guide that has people showing NO VIRUSES/SPYWARES & other screwups, via following its point, such as THRONKA sees here -> http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=ee926d913b81bf6d63c3c7372fd2a24c&t=28430&page=3

What do I have to say about that much above? I can't say it any better, than this was stated already (from the greatest book of all time, the "tech manual for life" imo):

Name tossing's not logical (ad-hominem attack)

Well, then you had best "thicken your skin", because sometimes? Folks have opinions (which are weak compared to verifiable facts is all). Heck, I am currently helping the folks over @ the "Open Sores"! Well, guess what?? See what I just wrote... I help guys on projects of that very nature in fact, see here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultradefrag/forums/forum/709672/topic/3690136
and, more below... AND, over time? On many other freeware apps too when I had time to do so!
(So, yes, I may call it that, in "Open Sores" but it's NOT necessarily a "put down" on my part either... just facts that IF you have sourcecode, it's FAR easier to spot bugs in than attempting to do so via fuzzers or debuggers on closed source... but doesn't mean I don't LIKE "Open Sores", either)
UltraDefrag 64's a great opensource project is why! The FIRST 64 bit defragger for Windows NT-based OS is pretty cool imo!
(So - I helped by first (minor here) sending them a better icon, which he said "looks like SHIT" even though others liked it on the forums there (a moderator iirc)... As you can see there? Well - I didn't mind it. I can take it, as it's opinion only!)
I did that part on appearances, because many of their users don't like the interface Dmitri uses (I don't mind it @ all, it's on par with others like it in fact), but the icon did need help imo to HELP WITH THAT FORM OF CRITIQUE THE OTEHRS THERE GAVE HIM!
Now, I also am in process helping them improve defrag times hopefully, via offering the dev the ability to alter his CPU timeslice priority control API's, http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultradefrag/forums/forum/709672/topic/3690136 and some tips/pointers on when you can't "get more" out of your code? You go after HOW YOU PROCESS DATA http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultradefrag/forums/forum/709672/topic/3369133 (I ran into this many times over the past 20++ yrs. now coding here is why, & it tends to get GIANT gains, by working algorithms, rather than being obsessed with code optimizations).
That? That is more "major" form of aid imo @ least (his driver does most of the work, but this can help, some (I've seen it give code I have written a 15%++ gain in completion times before, but there are BETTER ways to do that, & I also offer him that as well in another thread there -> ).
You know, you "busted my balls" for using the term "Open Sores", but they CAN be that, per the ssc
