Does it have to be a competitive two player game?
'Cause if it does, I feel I should quote C-3P0:
I suggest a new strategy, R2: let the wookie win.
Seriously though, if you are up for 'lets work together', and don't mind sharing the controller/keyboard, I would recommend something more puzzle & adventure oriented. Could be a point 'n click, but it doesn't have to be. I mean, some of the older Tomb Raiders were good in this respect (puzzles); just remember to look at other parts of the screen once in a while or your plan may backfire. Let's face it, FPS' are more reaction time and fine motor control -- which can be fun -- but I have a sneaking suspicion your better half will appreciate something more cerebral.
If you really do want a truly 2 player game, I would recommend something coop. If you have Half Life and more than one computer (and what self-respecting geek doesn't?), then give Sven Co-op a try. Play through Half Life co-operatively. There is also a huge map pack avaliable with decent maps; not all of which are quick-blast-everything-that-moves. Other choices include other coop games, such as Halo 2. I'm sure you can think of others without too much effort; eg sports games, racing games usually have > 1 player mode built-in, at least for consoles.
Personally, I'd go for the one that gets you the most thanks-for-thinking-of-me-honey... points.

Re:Another thing lost...
For what it's worth, the folks behind the excellent Sven Co-op mod for Half-Life 1 are working on a version for Half-Life 2. It's been in the works for quite a while now and IIRC they are getting some help from Valve (though it's possibly just some explanation of game code etc). Progress seems slow right now but you can keep an eye on http://www.svencoop.com/ for more updates.

Just to point out...
The beginnings of CS were, also, "underground". From Wikipedia:
The Counter-Strike team was formed by Minh Le ("Gooseman") and Jess Cliffe ("Cliffe") in 1999. Counter-Strike Beta 1.0 was released in June that same year, followed by a relatively quick succession of the beta releases (by the end of 1999, beta 5.0 had been released). CS gained in popularity just as rapidly. The Counter-Strike team was acquired by Valve to turn the fan-created mod into an official mod for Half-Life. In November 2000, Counter-Strike 1.0 -- the first non-beta, official retail version of the game -- was released. The retail version was a standalone alternative that does not include or require Half-Life; alternatively, existing Half-Life owners can download the Counter-Strike mod free. Later, Counter-Strike was bundled with Half-Life and several other expansions in the Platinum Pack. The newest version of CS is 1.6 and was released in September 2003 through Valve's new distribution platform called Steam.
Nowadays, no, it's not underrated, but I think the lesson to learn from this is any game, even just a hacked mod, can become world-famous, and that all those "underrated" games might need is a little street team action, and showing your friends.
Having played a good deal of Half-life mods, when I ran a few servers/lan parties/scripted for clans, I can tell you that I personally think MANY are underrated. The problem comes when too many people latch onto one (CS) and thus ignore servers for other mods. Then, those mods lose support when volunteer coders see their work isn't popular. For some other really good mods, check out:
- The Hidden
- Vampire Slayer
- Scientist hunt
- and my favorite Sven Coop!
Basically, the point of this post is to say that, CS at one point was also an underrated game, and if you want something to be recognized as a good product, you need to take initative and get its name out there. Support the project financially, or bugtest, so the creators know it's wanted.

Sven Co-op
Did you ever try Sven Co-op for original Half-Life?
They are suppose to come out with a version for HL2.

Re:someone make a good co-op mod
The co-op mode was actually planned by id, but was removed because of all the areas where there are tunnels where only one person can fit through. Perhaps, some day, someone will make a Sven Co-op-like mode for Doom 3 that will include map modifications. Only time will tell.

Damn! Forgot about the link!
The link was for Monster Screenshots showing the "Race X" aliens. -
Playing old DOOM games with addons...
I remember the days I played addons and mods with my buddies in DOOM 1 and 2 over dial-up modems and SirDOOM (lets you do 4 players on BBS' with dialup modems). It was much more fun when playing maps that we haven't played before.
I was hoping DOOM 3 (PC port) would have co-operative play like System Shock 2. I guess not. Maybe someone can hack DOOM 3 to have co-op like Sven Co-op. -
Sven Co-Op for Half-Life
If you don't get to play a lot and you're frustrated by the skill/learning curve of many games I'd recommend Sven Co-Op for Half-Life

It's a blast with friends and is all about teamwork and cooperative play. -
