Re:One of the advantages of Linux

Naahh - how about a programmable flashlight!
MP3 players - digital cameras - that's old hat - I'm thinking computer controlled, regulated, white LED flashlight that looks like a star trek phaser! The eternalight EliteMax. Spendy though - $100 but definitely the most advanced flashlight on the planet!

Re:What about toxicity?
Check out these. I use an ErgoXRay velcro'd to my helmet. Three AA's last 3-4 weeks of nightly commutes/rides. It will light your way if there aren't any streetlights. And it will most certainly make you seen in traffic.

Re:E-Book Piracy
Its a bit ackward to read on the screen but at least its free.
You should use a good reader program like ETR Set the font big and white on black and use a TFT not a CRT, prefarably on a laptop. You can read for hours that way.
the reader automatically bookmarks your location in the file when you close it, and on the next run it opens the file in the place where you stopped reading, and it has an integrated browser for the Project Gutenberg etexts.
The biggest problems with most e-book readers and pdf files is that they try to emulate paper books.Reading on screen is something different, and it can be quite comfortable if done correctly. -
Ultimate Geek Flashlight (White LED's of course)
The Technology Associates, Inc. Eternalight EliteMax has got to be the ultimate geek flashlight. Superbright white LED's, microprocessor control, and a miniature switching power supply.

Re:Eternalight!
I cannot buy anything from a company whose website is www.techass.com. Too many goate.cx possibilities.

Conversion fun
Anyone know how these two stack up againsed eachother?
MagmaLED
and
NewBeam
Is bigger/more == better in this case? They both look sexy...
Going with an EverLED for my club. Eer, 6-D Mag. (ya sold me n1ywb).
Oh, and what of my poor little Maglite Solitaire? Or is there just too little room?
Obviously, I *really* like Mag, but that Arc AAA is looking like it's worth a shot if not. -
Eternalight!
I got an Eternalight "Ergo-Marine" for Christmas, and it's defintely worth the money. The four LEDs are microprocessor-controlled, so they can be dimmed, made to flash in sequence, or strobe. There is a lot of "spill" light, so it's very useful for walking in the dark. Unfortunately, since there are no focusing lenses, the range isn't that great, and you need a precision screwdriver to change the batteries. More information can be found at Technology Associates (yes, their website is poorly named
:).
I also have an Energizer folding LED light. It's a great booklight and nightlight, but it's fragile and hard on batteries. -
The pointI'd say the point is to have a conveniently viewable status display. I've seen reports about setups where different systems have different bird sounds associated with various statuses; apparently after a fairly short time changes in the background noise jump right out at you.
I could see using locally-connected glowing globes this for all sorts of monitoring; stock market tracking isn't really near the top of the list. I can see having a row of stuff like this visible in or near a server room for example, showing network latency or traffic load, system load, any of a variety of things.
What the difference between this and assorted other status/alarm LED displays? These are in a translucent block and are more easily visible from a distance. Not such a bad thing.
Heck, I use something similar as a shower timer - it dims over 15 minutes, and if I glance over and it's gone out then I'm probably running late.

EText Reader
You could try EText Reader, for linux or windows. Allows you to read zipped etexts as well as retrieve online Project Gutenberg texts. You can also select the font and bookmark stuff.

eternaLight XRayI just received my eternaLight Xray and I can't stop playing with it, it's so cool! It's got bright-dim, flash, strobe, SOS, and other modes. As well as a blue LED that flashes very 2s so you can locate it in the dark. I can't wait for night; I'm going down to the basement to test this baby.
I got mine from theLedLight.com; they've got them on special. You can also get them from Glow-Bug.
