Re:Not the biggest
Yeah not the biggest, but they look like they are doing a good job and that's all that matters. Gotta love
/. haters finding something to whine about (not you TwoStep, the people whining about other things). If you can't get excited about a place where geeks and people that want to make stuff can share equipment that few people can afford on their own, so they can make cool stuff, go read somewhere else.
The Geek Group also has 42,000 square feet, but it appears to be a work in progress. -
Re:Museum?
Try looking in michigan: thegeekgroup.org. (caveat, I'm a card carrying member)

Re:Non-grandfather here also interested
I was going to say the same thing. And if a tesla coil is too pedestrian, there are plenty of other "macro-scale" electrical projects to build, like quarter shrinkers or Marx bank capacitor set-ups for crushing cans. Check out 4HV and the Geek Group for ideas and communities to bounce other ideas off of.

Re:Facebook
How much thought and value do people place in FaceBook updates? Little to none. People just spontaneously update to it almost all day long.
Then you need to cull your friends list, and learn how to hide app posts.
Looking the top of my feed, I see:
1. Pat's dad died, he made a joke about him playing poker with John Wayne.
2. Grant is looking for people to help with his deck today (I'm heading over after lunch).
3. The Geek Group is looking for people to help with demolition at their new facility.
4. Doug is really pissed about Dan Harmon and most of the creative staff getting fired from Community.
5. Jessica is auditioning for a harpist position with an orchestra, and excited that her 10-week-old fetus is hearing Gershwin for the first time.
I do have a friend (a housewife) that posts about 80 times a day about what stupid, inane things her children did, but I've just hidden her from my feed, because I'm a bastard and don't care about them that much. It wasn't hard. But everyone else on my friends list is like me - kind of minimalist. We don't treat FB like a 15-year-old girl just discovering Twitter.

Re:I wish there was a cafe...
The Geek Group* recently moved to Grand Rapids, MI and is planning on putting a coffee shop in its new, super-hacker-space lab when it opens to the public. There would definitely be no problem with soldering in the cafe, though you might have to take the Dremel out into one of the other rooms due to flying metal bits. I'm not sure what the rules will be about Tesla coils in the shop, though.
*Disclosure: Yes, I am a member. Forgive me for promoting something cool in which I believe. -
I like this one
There are likely only about 1,000 Tesla coil hobbyists worldwide.
There are quite a few more of us around as the Pupman mailing list http://www.pupman.com/ and the Geek Group http://www.thegeekgroup.org/ can attest. -
The geek group, opensource lab and learning
Thats exactly what we are trying to do for the local community at http://www.thegeekgroup.org/ Give kids and anyone else the access to tools parts and space to tinker, build and test whatever they want. All for free, sponsored by donations and generous businesses, and our in house computer repair shop, http://www.appliedintel.net/

Behind The Times
While I applaud the effort, that report is behind the times. Many groups (including The Geek Group) have been using this approach to teach physics, and many other physical sciences, for years.
