Re:slashdot is not journalismOf course they're biased. They are serving their readership. Slashdot doesn't need to do the vapid is/isn't 'fair play' like those stupid TV talk shows do.
This is news for nerds. There's plenty of room on the web for the kind of 'objective' [laugh] sites (Toms and Sharkey) that Gilliard likes.
I think he's correct about outfits like Cnews and Ziff-Davis. They're junk. They hire journalists based on their writing abilities first, and their technical know-how second. All their stories are mostly are tiny puff pieces which are filler between the ads.
Hands down, the best tech newsites are The Register and The Inquirer. Van's Hardware, is getting pretty good, too.
One thing that I think escapes our Gillard is that IT is a big corporate swimming pool, and news is mostly closely-held secrets. Nobody speaks to IT journalists unless they have another wizz-bang product to sell. Investigative reporting in the IT industry is almost unknown.

Intel Just Jealous
Because they can't outperform Via. Thus... just like their partner, Rambus, counter attack with lawsuit. What a classic. Meanwhile, Via has a very strong case, too.
Some bits here and here at Anandtech, and there is another one at Hardware Central. Then, here and here at Tom's Hardware.
All says: Via Rocks, Intel sucks. I'll leave it to you to judge.

More Information
Check out The Inquirer for more information. They said the court makes no difference to the patent infringement case.

Re:Don't mess with Russians!Given that Alexander Katalov, president of Elcomsoft, is allegedly ex-KGB, I have been sneakily hoping all the way through this mess that the Adobe CEO will be found at the bottom of the river with a brand new set of concrete overshoes.
Or sent to Siberia, or whatever the KGB generally did with people they disapproved of.
Note to FBI and those with no sense of humor: this is not thought-crime. It is a joke.

Interview with Sklyarov's boss
Didn't see this article mentioned. It cites an interview with Alexander Katalov, president of Elcomsoft and former KGB operative(!). Apparently, Elcomsoft has done quite a bit of work for the FBI itself, selling them, you guessed it, password-cracking programs. Now FBI is running around arresting its business partners. Sheesh...

Re:DMCA Violations Lead to Human Rights Violations
Check this out. According to The Inquirer, Sklyarov (and the rest of Elcomsoft) have actually worked *for* the FBI, and their boss is a former KGB operative. I certainly didn't see this one coming.
What with the embarrasing FBI mole fiasco and the more recent lost guns and laptops affair, and now this, seems that the FBI guys really are losing it. -
Perhaps this is slightly offtopic but......is it now OK to link to The Register now that Mike Magee doesn't work there anymore? OK, so I don't read Slashdot that religiously anymore, but I can't remember the last time I saw a story linked to there from here.
Or maybe there's a large conspiracy against the poor man by Slashdot, Intel, Microsoft, and the Bavarian Illuminati. Well, maybe not. But there could be!
OK, I'll get get some sleep now. But not after I link to Mike's new page.

Re:but the onboard video?
Following the original inquirer link, and drilling down a bit to an older article, it seems the on-board video will be ATI Rage XL. It's an ancient chipset, but it will do 2048x1536.
More importantly, it should do superwide 1600x1048 for my 1600sw... hehe. -
Re:Screaming Sindie?
Thanks for a genuine laugh-out-loud moment. Mike Magee has finally been found out!
And in the other article he refered to Chimpzilla as the chip supplier. The guy is clueless!
By way of explanation it is a very common jest in the UK to exchange someone / something's name for a ridicule that sounds similar. Not exactly highbrow humour but I like it all the same. I was under the impression this existed in other cultures... obviously not yours.

460 Watt PSU!
The inquirer also has an article which breaks down the 460 watt PSU requirement by component. I still want one even if it would up my electricity bill. Random thought: I hope they don't release these first in California...
