I agree, but it could be used to perfectly reproduce a master performance (given that instrument quality, etc. are equal, which may not be the case.) They may not be able to do it themselves, but they might be able to serve as a new sort of player piano.
You forgot the only thing that makes MUMPS worth programming in: the array structure. Arrays are string indexed and are stored as B trees, making it easy to create your own DB structures. It can be faster than SQL DBs in applications with enough data and dimensions, hence its creation and use at hospitals (the first M is for Massachusetts general hospital) and its use in the financial sector. See the article for more stuff if you're interested (including links to open source implementations).
"A friend of mine won't get a divorce, because he hates lawyers more than he hates his wife."
More seriously, people who stay together for long lifetimes don't divorce just because they can't have kids. Providing for kids may be the greatest benefit for society, but couples provide their own reasons for staying together.
I do agree that reproduction would become a big, big issue, but that does assume universal availability of lifetimes, which probably won't be the case for many, many years after it becomes available.
So I Googled around for Clint Curtis, the guy who is making these claims, and found the affidavit mentioned in the story. If anyone else is interested in reading more information on an article they didn't read...;)

Hotep? That means "content" or, in the more general sense, "offering". So Ptah-Hotep basically means Ptah is content or Ptah has accepted an offering or something like that. This makes more sense if you know Ptah is the god of something or other. I really should know this; I've got an exam in my Ancient Egypt class Friday.

Anywho, that makes the name "Bubba Hotep" that much more interesting. Who knew Bubba was an Egyptian god?:)
Good post. Made me laugh. Anywho, there was one point from the article that got left out; namely their defending the use of 'theft' et al.(using the worst defense I've heard on the 'net) They not only completely agree with it, but they only look at it from the standpoint of the copyright holder and not that of the "victims" of the legal monopoly. And they say they're trying to maintain neutrality...
"Q)Accordingly, what steps are being taken to clarify the correct terminology and to avoid jingoistic use of words like 'theft', 'thieves' and 'stealing' amongst law enforcement and elsewhere? A) Sorry, false advertising cases go to the FCC, who just got spanked by congress so don't expect much from them for a few decades."
My favorite part about both of those is that you could say "Hey, man,..." to the same woman and she would find that LESS offensive. Ain't English grand?
Check this post by the admin of the Arreat Summit; he lists the major changes in very broad form, but new "anti-cheating measures" are among them. I've never been a big fan of playing on the realms, but I might have to try building a ladder character or 3 just to see how well I can do...
The game doesn't need patching in terms of bugs. I'm not saying it's bug free or anything, but the game is definitely worth playing in its current form. Think of this "patch" as a bucket of extra goodies to entice you to keep playing this addictive game until the next one comes out.
Oh, and I've been playing Angband. Almost as addictive, but it doesn't require as much adrenaline. I've do play other games; it's not like Diablo is the only game in town...
This also means that all these "get a router that uses PPPoE comments" are also "unsupported." Get your connection set up with just the Mac (in case you need to call tech support) and then get the router or hub involved. If you have problems on your home network and hooking up the Mac to the modem works, they won't support it. Follow these steps and all of us who work tech support will thank you.
IMHO, one of the better reasons for getting an old G3 imac at this late date is that the entire machine (including monitor) draws a maximum of 150 W. The new one is 130 or 160 depending on the screen size. Not too shabby...
Actually, you'll need to get one of the new 3.06 GHz P4s; it's power dissipation is above and beyond any Athlon. The highest an Athlon ever got was ~74 W max; the current P4 has an average of 81 W and a max of ~105 W.
...they're just taking advantage of a situation that should not exist in the first place. Right? Right...
From the article:
As I said, there are no villains here. SBC probably came across this patent and realized that it could be the basis of an Internet tax, that the company had a good chance of getting license revenues from millions of web site owners and it is hard to blame them for that. They are, after all, in business to make money.
The idea that this is corporate greed rights all wrongs is really getting old. The catch all justification of our times. Where is this going to end?
Except... he's not up for election this year. Kohl was reelected in '06.

I doubt it. Real men aren't going to do fellatio on a cat5 cable (how else are you going to do a GET?) to read a web page.
Here's a link to a copy of the original.
The bottom line of /. may have your answer:
