And the indies go out of business now...
It's great there's competition from indie Internet dealers, but for those trying to run a brick and mortar shop, business is much more difficult.

Re:I don't get it
Actually, there is an allotment of tickets for passholders and the rest are up for grabs. As long as you have your shit together and buy your tickets around the time when they go on sale, and not try to get them an hour before the show, you can get in.
The most popular shows at the SIFF festival, the tickets have overwhelmingly gone to the general public. This may be unique, but so is the Seattle festival.
I really suggest dropping the 'elitist' fear you seem to have and get out and see some movies, if that is what you are interested in. Its really not too hard to be invloved in independent film, and aside from a few martini slinging weirdos (who you get to laugh at at the parties) most people are very cool, and probably not too different from yourself.
Although, there is a certain breed spotted at the fesitval, that is not this elite type you are talking about, but a weirdo obsessed fat crowd, not unlike those you see at star trek and comic book conventions. -
Re:Seattle is working on this too...With the 2nd worst rush hour traffic in the US (behind LA) I hope they can pull it off.
I always wonder how exactly this is measured. I live in Seattle and took a trip to San Francisco - that was bad. Jammed up well after 8:30pm, whereas Seattle is fine (not good, but passable) even at 5:30pm. At least from the North to downtown.
Anyway, the monorail has been approved by the voters, approved again by them and now needs to be approved again. This is what is known as the "fucking politics" effect. The monorail should have broken ground quite a while ago if not for moronic councilmen and other politicians. The Stranger, a non-satire cousin of The Onion has a monorail article every 2 weeks or so and usually it's about how it's getting taken up the ass. Our new mayor is dead set on getting light rail built despite the fact that it ruins foot traffic in a number of poor people's neighborhoods (and unsurprisingly, will be underground through most of the white, middle to upper class neighborhoods). Unfortunately, the other choice for mayor - Mark Sidran - was a stern motherfucker who would have been much worse, overall.
I personally have very little faith the monorail will be built here in Seattle within the next five years. The good news for me is that mass transportation (buses) will start running from Seattle to the northern suburbs (all the way to Everett, I think - I know it makes it to Mukilteo) in under 2 years. Then, assuming I still live in Seattle, I will be able to sell my car. That's a 2500 lb. chain around my neck I'll be happy to ditch.

Re:Why I think Jon Katz articles are a Good ThingTrouble is I'm not a moron.
:)But seriously. Jon Katz is good for
/. because he posts stuff for the rest of the population who aren't technically advantageous. And I agree that his heart is in the right place.Another thing I notice about what John writes is that he tends to look at the big picture, as opposed to the minute parts of it. Good for Jon.
I also would like to add what you said in saying that Jon Katz talks about his opinions on
/. He's not a reporter, he's more of a columnist. I don't agree with everything I hear from Dan Savage, but I don't think he's an idiot or an asshole (well, maybe that's not true about the asshole part). The way Jon sees things is the way most people probably see things, with a little bit of the in-the-know added to it. He's not entirely clueless, and his perceptions are good, so I think people ragging on Jon should realize that a lot of what /. is about is free speech. If you like free speech, don't bitch about Jon. -
Best review ever!
No, not Katz - this one, from The Stranger, a local weekly in Seattle:
Behind Enemy Lines
Two of the greatest American movie actors of this young century, Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson, share the screen in this utterly irredeemable piece of complete and total shit. In case the end of that last sentence didn't spell it out, suck on this: With the POSSIBLE exception of about three minutes of semi-exciting plane-flying footage, THERE IS NOTHING GOOD ABOUT THIS FILM. NOTHING. AT ALL. EVER. AT ALL ALL ALL!!! Ugly as sin, badly lit, poorly acted, logically untenable, and possibly not even written, Behind Enemy Lines is a total fucking travesty in which even the actors' makeup is incompetently applied. I know everyone's desperate for The Royal Tennenbaums, but this Wilson-Hackman pairing is no kind of substitute. Do not see it, please, for the love of all things holy. -
Does Anyone Know Whois the REAL .commIEs?
Just in case rob/limo forgets to post this story. Happy Turkey Daze to All.So, whois Brendan Barnicle , "Vice Principle and Senior Research Analyst", with Pacific Crest "Securities" (requires flash plugin to view?), really? & why is he allowed to provide so much MiSinformation (google) to the "mainstream media" (AP)?
"Last month, former Mylackey [defunct
.com/scam] Chief Financial Officer Brendan Barnicle called the cops to report that $53,844 in computers had been stolen from the company. It's not clear, however, why Barnicle waited until March 16 to report the loss, which originally came to light last October when the company closed down. On that terrible day (October 27, 2000), a computer- leasing company showed up to take away the items, only to discover they were missing.
No word on the current whereabouts of the 21 stray computers. Barnicle, who has gone on to become a financial analyst for Pacific Crest, was unavailable for comment." Nancy Drew
Good thing we've got guise LIEk Brendan to help us decide about "investments" in our future, know? More clues as to whoare the REAL
.commIEs/FraUDs. Moron Brendan, who, amusingly enough, is touted as a "former" lawyer (turned stock tout/shill?). Looks LIEk he fills the "lackey" position, perfectly.Al Gore(s) the Bull? from: CNN

Re:Air time varies
It is 'open source news' in a way, after all)
I wouldn't go that far - NPR has been pretty aggressive in lobbying against microbroadcasting, and other independent media. Fearing that microbroadcast operators might threaten its monopoly on community-oriented broadcasting, it lobbied the FCC and Congress to keep low-power operations illegal, narrowing the pool of voices you hear on air.
In a recent article in Seattle's The Stranger, NPR host Ira Glass criticized NPR for being risk-averse and uninnovative, noting there are few young or minority voices in NPR programs.
I used to be a big NPR supporter, until they began to strong arm the government to exclude other community broadcasters. -

Pot, meet kettle. Don't be calling names, now.
Given the sorry record the boys at
/. have for accurate reporting, a better question would be: Is this even true?
Ah, this would be a person who is flaming Taco about not reading the linked article in a given story yet doesn't check the linked article himself. Very funny.
It's people like you that have made me just about give up looking for real discussion on Slashdot. But then, I suspect that's probably the reason idiots like you post anymore; too pathetic to stop reading yourselves, so you'd rather drive everyone else away.

Re:DMCA?
Speaking of unusual aching, you might want to read Christ that aches with Johnathan Frakes. For all you ST:TNG fans out there. Off topic, I know, but now that the Karma cap is in place, I'm a crazy man.

It's on cNet, what about other news media?
Looks like it's on cNet, according to this story here.
Anyone seen it on CNN in Tech, or NY Times, or Washington Post yet? How about Seattle Times or Seattle Post-Intelligencer or Seattle Weekly or The Stranger?

Re:Once again...
Once and for all, Jon: if you are for freedom and privacy, let me post the text of every book you've written to the web and allow it to be viewed and downloaded.
Heck, I can do one better. I've got friends over at Slate magazine... they post opinion pieces (that's the raison d'etre for them actually)...
... so how about this: we just get all of Katz' articles, and publish them, one by one, in Slate. I could probably get my friends at The Stranger (a Seattle free newspaper) and the Seattle Times to publish them too.
We'd see exactly how long Katz' stance on copyright would hold -- based on how long it would take for him and/or Andover to sue the papers. After all, if he's being published, he should be paid - right?... otherwise it's a copyright violation.

One and the same
An interesting guy. His talk show "Savage Love Live" was better than I think he thought it was, but he stopped doing it anyway. Which reminds me, there's a new edition of The Stranger out today.
