Re:Posted from a T61
The taskbar had 7 icons in the notification area in addition to the ones from the OS, plus a useless battery power gauge that took up another big chunk of real estate
You don't understand. In the Land of China, clutter is beautiful. More icons > fewer icons.
Don't believe me? Check out a few popular Chinese websites -
Re:As an American living in China
You can pretty much speak about anything you want here in public, as long as it doesn't cover a few hot-button topics.
"A few hot-button topics" such as the freedom of religion, the freedom of speech, the freedom to migrate within the country, etc.?
I tell you what, why don't you sell all your properties in the US, give up your US citizenship, and become a PRC citizen, and _then_ come back and tell us it's "very exaggerated."You can take photos and video anywhere.
If you can read Chinese, read this news about how family members were prevented, by the police with physical violence, from taking pictures of the dead body of the father who died overnight in the city jail: http://news.tom.com/1006/4820/2005524-2156520.html
If you can't, well, just shut up and quit pretending that you know what's going on in China. -

for the teenagers and children...
"Mr. Liu said the major thrust of the Chinese effort to regulate content on the Web was aimed at preventing the spread of pornography or other content harmful to teenagers and children.
fine, sites like this: http://et.21cn.com/portray/ , this: http://tu.tom.com/list/beauty.html , this: http://www.qihoo.com/site/tietu/index.html
... are totally accessible China sites for Chinese teenagers and children of any age... (yep, they're NOT pornography and harmful content, maybe I'm just too sensitive...)dear poor blocked http://www.freebsd.org/ you're more harmful to teenagers and children in China...

Perspective of a Resident ChinamanIt's funny to see the completely misinformed postings here. If anybody has a genuine interest (and doesn't just view this as an excuse to rail against the Chinese Government) here are a few relevant points
- Skype is huge here. Have a look at Skype Tom, tom.com is a big Chinese-language portal, they've had a strategetic partnership for a while, which got upgraded last week. Shanghai newspapers will have an editorial or article about Skype all the fucking time, it's almost a joke. China is Skype's 3rd largest market and I imagine will soon be Skype's largest. The service works very well within China, although you can't get a China Skype In number yet, only Hong Kong.
Who knows how this went down, but I'd blame it on China Telecom bastards, and a LACK of government regulation on the market. If it was the government, why would it be limited to CT, and not CU (the other big telco) as well? Unfortunately business and government workings are not so transparent outside the US.
The $1/minute LD figure is a joke. Technically that's true but realistically everybody uses IP phone cards to call the long distance, they're sold EVERYWHERE. It's a Byzantine system but boils down to maybe $.10/minute. I use Skype for LD so I'm not quite sure on the cost though.
The idea that Skype is especially suspectible to Falun Gong propoganda is somewhat insane. Anybody who mentions this idea is really out to lunch or learned everything they know about China from anti-China propoganda (which is a possibility I guess).
The main problem to Skype is that the Internet connections are overloaded. Well, at least that's the case in Shanghai.

Re:Wow!
you looked at screenshots from both games, but have you actually played windwaker? there are so many visual similarities aside from the character (who is very very similar to link) that i can see exactly why they'd get pissed. everything from the little swoosh on the right of 'wiki' to the subtle facial detailing to the general colors of each scene.
here's another screenshot: http://games.tom.com/images/2005/wlgame/0218/002/0 10.jpg and here's a good compare image for those who've not played the game: http://www.gameking.com.cn/gk/news/05/2/17/1432184 487_1.jpg -
Re:Malfunction, Will Robinson!
Not to mention the whole royal family...
Well, I don't remember people complaining too much about Princess Diana, and I know that we ladies aren't exactly bemoaning Prince William or even Prince Harry's looks. Granted, there are some pretty ugly royals, but there are rotten apples on every family tree. -
Re:The first Diskmen ws the smalest?
I still have my original Sony Discman D-50 from 1985 (link to Japanese page. It definitely isn't the smallest.

Re:Best for shareholders
It's not really a joke, many
.com is actually doing that. -
Re:Why is anyone surprised?
Why is anyone surprised by this? After all, practically none of the dot coms had a viable business model
Not really. Like this .com lives on the interests gain from its capital raised during .com boom; it doesn't generate much revenue but will still live forever. Even more, this .com acquired massive amount of capital in the same way and they even have spare money to invest.
They are running a very successful business model in a sense.
(Just in case you ponder, these are black jokes on real cases) -
Can you top that?
I'm not sure if it's off-topic, but I've a gut feeling that Microsoft comes to show you little kids how a big guy plays the game.
We've an exhibition in Hong Kong with Microsoft's booth surrounded by their rival companies.
Microsoft didn't bring any technical man, not much sales or marketing guys, no free gifts. However, we all lost the publicity - see it yourself why
Can you top that?
