RIMMS are way ahead of DDR DIMS bandwith wise, but as THG also shows us , performance wise, single channel DDR is as fast (less that 1% slower) than RDRAM based systems. This of course is on chipsets by companies that typically have trouble keeping up with intel. Not to mention, another channel can be added (easily ?), ask NVIDIA. Latency kills the RAMBUS advantage. Intel isn't so much offering lesser performance for less money. They are offering equal performance for less money. Hopefully, this option will cut down Rambus prices.

The long and short of it is that RAMBUS - the company - created a type of memory which was legally provable to be different from the known standard, and then they tried to claim that they had a patent on SDRAM as well. The chip itself is a perfect example of "Market-engineering"... it was marketed as being much faster and more powerful than SDRAM or DDR, but in real-life conditions it was almost laughably slow and even unstable - overheating being one of its worst problems. As a result, it is frankly the honest-to-god truth that RAMBUS just wanted to usurp the memory market with an inferior product. Don't take my word for it though - go read the articles about RAMBUS at Tom's Hardware and see it for yourself. The numbers there don't lie, at least in my experience. Intel stuck with RAMBUS because they stood to gain a strong ally in the hardware market, but RAMBUS buggered it all up by being greedy...

The Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1 has a non-kludgy remote with RCA or digital jacks for sounds. I've found this to be a decent solution since I can control MP3 and DVD playback with the remote. Contrary to other posts, I've had very good 800x600 picture quality from my GeForce TV-out. However, I do end up watching DVD's on my monitor since the picture quality is so much better than the TV.

5-12% max not 50-80%
The KT266A is faster than the regular AMD760, but it isn't 50-80% faster. Look at tomshardware.com to look at some benchmarks. Two cpus on a AMD760MPX are clearly faster in most multicpu capable applications than one cpu on a KT266A board.
Using 2 cpus isn't usefull for many applications and two Duron 1ghz on a 760MPX are slower in most applications than on Athlon XP 1900+ in a KT266A especially for gaming. -

Many know that Linux has software RAID, but that is not your only choice.Windows 2000 also provides software driven RAID.

I'm not sure about you guys, but I noticed a really subtle pro-AMD bias in this article. For instance, the banner ad on the top of the page was for the new Athlon XPs and linked to AMD's page. And the author gave Intel a few token references, and then completely ignored them in the benchmarks.
The author performed benchmarks in a number of major 3D applications, and in all the AMD chips absolutely rocked: If you have a problem with the methodology, or feel that it isn't telling the whole story, then post your own site (that's the beauty of the net). I think it's fairly obvious that putting an ad for a Xeon chip on an article where it was pummeled probably doesn't make an awful lot of sense.

Let me get this straight: You refute an article that is packed full of actual metrics by saying that it's biased, and then you say that people should get a Pentium 4 if they're not going to "overclock their unreal box" (again an absolutely absurd supposition given that we're talking about an article where the AMD trounced the Intel chips in something much more serious than "overclocking their unreal box").

The absolute definition of FUD. "Uh, sure the AMDs are faster, but they have heat and manufacturing issues!". Whatever. Metrics are all that matter, and the metrics in the industry say that the power consumption of upper end Intel's and AMDs are very similar (hence similar heat), and that major manufacturers have roughly equal DOA rates with both chips. The metrics also say time and time again that the "real world performance" of the AMDs are often faster than the Intels.
In fact, having rebuilt my kernel with the new Intel compiler, the P4 just screams and leaves the Athlon in the dust.
I see. Again please tell us when you've put up a site and posted some benchmarks with your platform and methodologies, because as it sits it sure sounds like a bunch of bullshit.
I'm going to shoot in the dark here and make a wild guess: You ran out and bought yourself a fancy new Pentium 4, spending top dollar to be the top dog in the tech arena (of course not doing any research), but now that you have your new purchase you're a little more sensitive whenever you see performance benchmarks, and everytime you see another review that shows the Athlon dominating it just burns at you, so here you are with your "real world" experience. Bullshit. I highly doubt you have an Athlon whatsoever.
I am not biased whatsoever, and if Intel comes out with something that is competitive with the XPs at a similar price then damnit, I'll be there. But I owe nothing to Intel, nor do I owe anything to AMD, so I lack "brand loyalty" and simply go for what is proven the best at the best $. If only more consumers were that way.

In fact, having rebuilt my kernel with the new Intel compiler, the P4 just screams and leaves the Athlon in the dust. And with the bargain basement prices that PCs from major manufacturers (read: Pentiums - face the truth) are going for, there's no reason why they would be more expensive than a slower Athlon box.
So be forewarned - this article, like those on so many other hardware sites, was bought and paid for by the folks in Austin. Take this infomercial with a grain of salt.

some pc hardware recommendations
OK, a lot of the other posts are fairly insightful about recommending a Mac. (Where I work, on graphics person swears by Macs, the other swears at them.)
If you go with a PC solution, I strongly recommend a Matrox video card. Top notch color quality and 2d image performance. Crisp text, etc etc. In this arena, Matrox beats the pants off of anything nVidia or ATI can field, from what I've seen.
Also, get a Trinitron moniter. You can find 17-19" trinitrons in the 250-350 range. Yeah, that's going to likely be the biggest chuck of the 1000, but it's worth it.
In addition to the keyboard (I suggest Keytronic) and mouse (can't go wrong with a M$ scrollimouse), get her one of the "hobbyist" wacom tablets. They cost about 99, but I have two computer artists that think they're worth more than their weight in gold. (I know these work with macs too, so it's a dual purpose recommendation
Don't worry about SCSI unless she wants to do video editing.
For motherboard recommendations I usually trust Tom's Hardware. The plain fact of the matter is that most graphics tools will run just fine on say a p3-500 running on a 440bx board. So even the cheapest duron you can buy and a decent abit or asus kt133/kt133a chipset board will handle PhotoShop with one hand tied behind it's back. Out pc-using graphicsgrrl is using a duron 850 machine and is just as happy as can be with it's performance (she was giggling at how fast some of the more cpu intensive filters were running).
So, here's a parts list and prices (USD), I'm taking all this from Essential Computer. They're a place I've had good dealings with three or four times now... Anyway, this is what I'd build if it were me.
- AMD duron 950 (retail box w/ HSF): $75
- Abit KT7A: $90
- Micron 512Mb pc133 dram: $69
- Matrox G550 (32mb ddr, db15 and dvi): $93
- SB pci128 sound card: $18
- Netgear 311 10/100 nic: $18 (and/or: 3com usr 2977 non-winmodem pci 56k $45)
- Seagate Barracuda ST340016A 40gb 7200rpm ata100 drive: $96
- Plextor 12/10/32 cdrw: $112
- kb/mouse/floppy: season to taste, probably about $30-40
- Enlight 7237 case w/ 300w pwr: $59 (and another case fan for the back side: $5)
I didn't include software costs in that, but I'd really suggest she go with windows 2000. Stable and it supports the widest range of graphics software and hardware (I love open source as much as the rest of you, but frankly if you're serious about graphics OSS just doesn't cut it yet). That's probably $120, and then there's another $x for the graphics software itself. If you go with adobe, you would do best to find a college student and bribe them to buy you the academic-priced sw (you'll save probably 500+ dollars). (oh, and you can save $$$ on MS Word, if all she needs is simple document editing like for resumes or whatever, AbiWord works about as well as word97) There are of course alternatives to the official channels for Adobe and Macromedia producs, but that I leave up to you. YMMV (Your Morals May Vary).

This tomshardware article is just bad.I can't believe 3 people signed their names on it. I know many people have already complained about its numerous errors, omissions, and distortions, so I will confine myself to the problems with the comparison chart on this page.
There are three types of problems in this chart. In many places the authors put "N/A" because they were simply too lazy to find out the correct specifications. Uninformed readers might get the impression this means the console lacked any features in that category. Secondly, some of the numbers are just wrong. Finally, many of these numbers are comparing apples to oranges. Since the errors seem to be concentrated on the Gamecube, and that's the console I know the most about, I'll just stick to correcting their mistakes on that column in the table.

Many of these categories aren't directly comparable. Even the RAM comparison is misleading, because Nintendo decided to use several different types of RAM. There are 24 MBs of so-called "1T-SRAM," which is actually a new type of DRAM offering improved and more consistent access times and transfer rates. There are also 16 megs of 83 MHz SDRAM, for sound and (speculatively) "other" unspecified purposes. Flipper has 3MB of embedded memory in the form of 2MB frame buffer and a 1MB texture cache. This totals 43 megs. On the other hand, the Xbox is a UMA machine with 64 MB of 200 MHz DDR-Dram. It has more memory and memory bandwidth, but actual performance is further from the peak numbers listed, in comparison to the Gamecube, and UMA designs are less bandwidth efficient. Therefore the memory bandwidth numbers aren't comparable either. The Gamecube is really the most bandwidth efficient of all 3 consoles, for a handful of reasons.
The polygon performance numbers given are meaningless, and clearly whoever posted those numbers has no idea what they mean. "6-12M/s" is Nintendo's conservative estimate of what developers would achieve in game. The PS2 and Xbox numbers are probably for flat-shaded triangle meshes - a number which is nearly useless in revealing what the hardware can do in a real game. Unless, of course, I, Robot becomes popular again.

Wow, look how crippled the GameCube's polygon performance is! And the GameCube doesn't even support compressed textures or "simultaneous texture fills"! It looks like GameCube games will have around less than 1/10th the polygons as the other consoles, with a single bad texture on them. This thing sucks! I'm glad I read a good in-depth technical site Tom's Hardware instead of the promotional literature produced by the console maker's themselves. I almost wasted my money on that lame-ass underpowered GameCube!

I like how having the OS be the W2k kernel is presented as a bonus. You have to pay a hefty license to develop/publish a game on ALL the systems. Maybe this guy is just a little too used to getting all of his Nvidia hardware and MS software for free.

Normally, I'd just sign that up to the fact that THG is a German site, and most of its authors I believe are German too. But I checked, and at least the names of the authors for this article sound like they could be native speakers of English. Otherwise, I would have guessed they called the consoles "domestic" since they are used in the home (as opposed to, I guess, at an arcade). *Shrug*. I'm not a native speaker of English myself, but I still find the headlines and other attempts at being witty/whatever at THG quite painful at times. Or just plain unintelligble--I still haven't figured out what they mean by "Joysticks For Flight Simulation- Using A Lever To Fly A Plane!". They sound as if the concept is somehow unique... Weird. Oh, and why have they made the text on the page unselectable? Probably just to annoy me, and cause more people to read their source. Mumble.

On this page, there is a chart that shows "Console History", with the relative successes by companies shown in bold. Not only is th SNES not boled, It's not even there. I find this very unsual, since growing up, everyone I knew had an SNES, period. You were considered "way out of it" if you were stuck with one of those crappy Genesis things.
