    A wily and ruthless competitor can, under my understanding of US copyright, challenge your copyright, using the previous incident as an instance of negligence to protect your copyright.

    Actually - I believe you're confusing Copyright with Trademark.


    Do NOT discount this, as it is the reason Alfred E. Neuman and MAD managed to avoid two potentially damaging lawsuits from people who had originally copyrighted his image. (You can check up on the whole story in their published "History of MAD")

    You might want to re-read that part. According to toonpedia (and perhapse another source), the issue was more a question of who owned the copyright. There were previous uses of the visage that predated the copyright claims in question. It wasn't that the copyright had been diluted like a trademark, but rather the copyright claim was invalid.

    I don't understand, your post got me wondering what you ment (since I'm not much of a cartoon fan, and I must admit ignorance). So I did a google search and came up with links like this, which seems to indicate that "Taz" is just a new name for a Warner origional character.

    I also found out that the little mermaid is a Hans Christian Anderson story, like many disney stories, a classic remaid like you said for the masses of kiddies.

    But I'm a little confused, while I don't exactly consider Looney Tunes to be the pinacle of comedy, (I couldn't stand them even s a child, and still can't stand most looney tunes cartoons) I wasn't aware that they stole many of their ideas from elsewhere. Do you have links, or other info to support this?

    The Mandrake logo features a magician's top hat and a magic wand. What connection does this have to the famous cartoon Mandrake the Magician? The name, the logo, and the magic theme seem to be an unlike conincidence. I wonder if Mandrake Linux will 'fess up and admit that they borrowed a little something from Mandrake the Magician.
